ScreenDimmer – saves battery

Author: Yllier  //  Category: Apps, News

ScreenDimmer allows you to save battery life by automatically dimming your device’s screen after a pre-defined time; or if you wish by turning the backlight off.

Most users suffer unnecessary battery drain while having their iPhone not on standby. Setting auto-lock to a short time makes it better, but is an inconvenience most of the time due to permanent locking and unlocking while waiting for something.

ScreenDimmer is the solution for this problem: Save battery life by reducing the backlight to a minimum if the device hasn’t been used for a pre-defined time and reduce the waste of the most energy consuming component, the backlight, of the iPhone or iPod.

Free yourself from worrying about locking your device

Brought to you by the developers of 3G Unrestrictor and Firewall iP.

ScreenDimer is available via the CydiaStore for only $0.99!

  • Dims the screen after a user defined time

  • Doesn’t dim if an app needs the screen (navigagtion software, video players, …)
  • Ability to exclude apps from dimming
  • Configuration interface in the Settings app

  1. The6uest Says:

Very nice but I would like a separate timer to dim the screen and turn off the backlight. I’d like to set a short time for the dim and have a little longer time set before the backlight turns off. Could that be added in a future update? Thanks!

  2. Yllier Says:

We will try our best :) btw. nice suggestions

  3. Marc Says:

it doens’t work on my iPhone 3G:(

  4. Marc Says:

update: it works perfect! thank you!

  5. Navec245 Says:

It actually works as you desire. I have the AutoLock set for 2 minutes and for the dimmer to kick in at 30 seconds. Works perfectly!

  6. Erik Joya Says:

Phone dies when backlight turn off is enabled. Cannot wake up the phone.

  7. Erik Joya Says:

works fine now after 3 times of reinstall

  8. Yllier Says:

strange. what happened after the first 2 installs?

  9. Yllier Says:

if it doesn’t respond to touch you can always press the home button

  10. ruben Says:

one question – I have set cydia to be excluded, but screen goes black anyway – home button brings it back on again, but does that mean it will not lock when excluded? Or do I need to respring after changing settings?

  11. Yllier Says:

if autolock is enabled it will lock at some time. this issue with Cydia is known and crashx and I will try our best to fix it in the next update.

  12. The6uest Says:

No, I want the dim first then backlight off THEN AutoLock.. You are confusing the backlight with AutoLock.

  13. Navec245 Says:

Do you suggest that AutoLock is set to NEVER?

  14. Jerry Says:

Fantastic app guys – saves me having to edit those plists every-time I update. Great stuff!

  15. Josh Says:

I cannot get this to work at all no matter what settings I apply, or however many times I re-install. Is this possible because I am running 3.1.3 jailbroken? The more info in Cydia states that it hasn’t yet been tested on 3.1.3?

  16. Yllier Says:

are you using any app like Advances Preferences or similar?
feel free to email me: yllierdev@gmail.com

  17. Spice Says:

Why only on the cydia store? I only use ROCKAPP, so much faster and cleaner than cydia. Please have it available in the Rock store, I am looking forward to this app

  18. macfr3ak Says:

Absolutely. RockApp is the only way to bypass Cydia payments methods which are no longer available from Amazon (in France in my case).

Does Saurik think really that all his customers are from US or some selected countries only ?

Or are we all obliged to use “PayPal” or at the worst some “Cracked versions” ?

It makes me wonder and makes me upset. It’s up to him to deal with Amazon.

    For now, it’s R.I.P (sorry R.Y.P).

Yllier is aware of it anyhow ;)

    Macfr3ak

  19. Yllier Says:

ScreenDimmer has been submitted to Rock. But they are a bit slower than the Cydia-repos. It should be available in about 24-48h

  20. macfr3ak Says:

    OK Thanks Mate ! :)

  21. ruben Says:

cool, thanks. I do have a question on behalf of firewall ip too, but will mail you (:-)

  22. ruben Says:

i get crashes since i installed this – when opening itunes with iphone connected and going to programs tab

Could be linked to dimmer and iconclasm together

  23. macfr3ak Says:

Thanks for your feedback; I’ve already installed “Dimmer” (up to 60s, cool), Hope the devs will fix that ;)

  24. Calvart Says:

it works perfect, only Navigon App. crashed, I had to uninstall it waiting for some fix.

  25. macfr3ak Says:

I don’t know if Yllier will be back soon here but you can always give him your feedbacks on his own blog or email him.

I would guess he’ll take it into consideration your issues for the next release ;)

  26. macfr3ak Says:

@ruben: it doesn’t appear to be linked to “Dimmer”. I have just installed & nothing’s wrong with me… (iConaclasm is not installed)

    Hope it helps ;)

    MF

  27. macfr3ak Says:

@Calvart: On the settings, you got a special section called ” Excluded Apps”:

Have you included Navigon by any chance ?

  28. ruben Says:

hm wierd, I don’t go there too often, but I saw it first time since I installed dimmer

  29. Yllier Says:

    are you maybe using shrink?

  30. ruben Says:

and I tested eleminating rmf – so it could be the combination of iconoclasm and dimmer

  31. macfr3ak Says:

@ruben: Maybe if u can a list of all your JBroken Apps installed on the iPhone?

Maybe it could help devs too…

  32. ruben Says:

    no found the culprit

FCSB/Iconoclasm + iTunes safe mode crashes that have started popping up appear to be caused by the latest LibActivator update.

New LI beta installs Libactivator. I hope they fix that

  33. ruben Says:

its definitly iconoclasm – they seem to know that with libactivator there are those crashes. As I installed LI beta (uses libactivator) the crashes come from there

  34. macfr3ak Says:

    Great !

I know someone or maybe 2 guys would will happy to fix it !

Ty ruben for your contribution ;)

  35. Calvart Says:

    yes, was included

  36. Calvart Says:

    My Jbroken apps. as follow:
Cydia-Cycorder-MxTube- BookReader-RealSMS-SwirlyMMS, also SBSetting And Open SH

  37. ruben Says:

cool, I can test if those guys come up with something

  38. macfr3ak Says:

@calvart: thanks for your post mentioning your JB Apps installed.

Guess Yllier will try to get a quick fix for you & ruben :)

    Keep in touch,

    Macfr3ak

  39. ruben Says:

    cool

I just installed 1.01 – Cydia is not showing in any of the lists anymore – why?

  40. Erik Joya Says:

back to crash problem, iPhone dies when backlight off enabled. I really don’t know why, it was working yesterday. Maybe it’s because I didn’t buy it. I’ll wait for the 2 different timers features before buying it.

  41. Yllier Says:

cause at the moment it is impossible to inject Code in cydia. that’s not a bug but a limitation of MobileSubstrate. :(

  42. Calvart Says:

everything is working perfectly now, Navigon working as usual after correction by Yllier, he was notified by eMail.

    Thanks

  43. ruben Says:

    ok, I see

  44. macfr3ak Says:

Yllier will release a new version within 24 Hours.

    So, be patient ;)

  45. macfr3ak Says:

Well… considering most of Feedbacks here & there, it appears that ScreeenDimmer needs to be improved. So, I would guess to wait for a better release :/

BTW, R.Y.P still has 1.0 (not updated yet) !!

Anyway, I’m sure you’ll get the last update within the next hours :)

My Post @ #22 was regarding FW IP. Not ScreenDimmer :(

    Patience is a vertue !

  46. Bill Gates Says:

Yllier AKA Reilly charging .99 for a worthless hack!? You should be ashamed at yourself! Stay far away from this loosah and his apps! He once hacked and stole everything he could, sorry Reilly, your character is too well known to allow your crap on my phone!

  47. macfr3ak Says:

In order to spit such vilifications ramblings, I really do thing either:

You need a serious & very well skilled shrink (clinically speaking I mean)

Or you’re so desesperately lost in your life & conscious about it, Consequently, yo’re still aware (perhaps ?) of handle definitively your proper end & saying goodbye to this nasty world ?

    R.I.P :)

  48. Mario Says:

    Hi!
    Installed the 1.0 version.

I have autolock disabled, but even with screen off, my iphone 3gs is spending much more battery than if it was locked..

In 1 hour battery dropped from 90% to 85% (usually it takes 8 hours to do this)

  49. The6uest Says:

Did you have an app or wifi running? When the phone is locked it stops certain things that aren’t stopped when just the screen turns off.

How much battery is consumed in 1 hour with the screen on?

  50. Mario Says:

    Yes, wifi is on.

In 7 hours dropped from 90 to 70%

Does this has a daemon running ? maybe i should put autolock within 5 min

  51. Yllier Says:

ScreenDimmer wasn’t developed to replace Lock completely. if you are not using your iPhone for longer either manually lock your iPhone if autolock is disabled or use a long lock time.

ScreenDimmer was developed, like the description suggests, to enable using longer auto-lock-delays but still saving lots of battery.

  52. Yllier Says:

yeah, you are right, I was Reilly. and the cydia dev community is well aware of that. but the last time I cracked an app was almost a year ago. Reilly as an appstore hacker is done.

and to make things clear: I didn’t steal. I always bought the apps I used (like I do today), the ones who stole were the ones who installed my hacks.

  53. Yllier Says:

oh, and most users will disagree with you about my apps being crap. so stop the crap and stfu

  54. ErMasLoko Says:

    Hello Yllier,

I have a problem with new version of ScreenDimmer. In 1.01 the “Apps with disabled idleTimer” only dim (good), but in 1.01-1, dim and LOCK the screen :(

With this apps I only want dim the screen (to save battery) but not lock.

Is an bug or is intentional?

    Thanks

  55. Anonymous Says:

would be great to have this feature.

  56. Navec245 Says:

1.2 is out. And you now have the capability to dim the screen and leave the backlight on!

  57. jason Says:

thank you so much…..really save and love more…

  58. Anonymous Says:

thanks for the very fast and useful update. dimming and turning of backlight seperately was exactly what I missed. now it’s perfect!

  59. jason Says:

Can it dim the lockscreen also….?

  60. Nlzi Says:

    Hi,

i would like to buy the screen dimmer, but do not find any buy button or another alternative to proceed in the buying process within cydia.

Could you please tell me how I can buy screen dimmer?

    THanks

  61. Ingwersen Says:

I am one of those annoying self-rightous pirates:

I “tried” your app on a pirate-repo – decided that I liked it and now want to buy it.
Only trouble is, I cant… there is no buy button in Cydia, only the option to “Install”. When I press it Cydia starts the install process, but stops and tell me I’ll have to buy the app… but I cant!

I have tried both with and without the pirated version of ScreenDimmer installed on the device as I try to buy/install the legal copy… no luck.

So now, I’m forced to continue stealing your software, because I cant buy and/or install your software through legal means. Or stop using it alltogether… none of those options suit my needs nor my twisted perception of moral.

    What do you propose?

    Kindest regards
    Johannes – a european app-”tester”

PS: Not being able to buy ScreenDimmer I tried to go buy another of your apps – Firewall iP. This app I hadn’t even “tried” first (so no pirate-shit involved) and I cant buy that one either! Whats up with this?

  62. gejaange Says:
