While SMB was made by Microsoft, Samba ports exist for Linux, Mac OS and tons of other OSes so you can access your device from all of those as well.

The current default configuration for Samba on iOS gives you read-only access to most of the file system and write access to an empty storage directory. This is actually done to prevent accidental damage (it’s easy in Windows Explorer to move a directory from one place to the other by accident). If you want more control over the sharing I highly recommend reading about Samba and how to configure it to do what you want (the configuration file resides in /etc/samba/smb.conf).

This port should was tested on iOS 3 and 4 (iOS 5 will be supported when it’s out).

Popular use cases might include:

- Going to your friends and using your iDevice as an portable storage device which works over WiFi without needing any file copying software on their Windows machine.

- Browsing your photos from your favorite photo viewer on your computer over WiFi.

- For the advanced users you can have full streaming access to your iDevice files from your computer.

Some notes:

- This version has no hidden costs, it’s free.

- This port will not allow you to mount an external SMB drive on your iPhone (that would require a kernel driver).

- When installing Samba, please configure it before first-time usage in the settings app under Samba.

- If you don’t understand something or have a question, please take the time to check the FAQ link in the settings app.

Just wanted to give you a headsup on this cool new 2 free tweaks I recently did:

NoLockScreen – disables the need for always sliding that annoying bar each time you need to unlock your device. If you have a pending message, it will still show it to you like before (till you dismiss it). On iOS 3.2 and above this works perfectly and instantly. On iOS 3.1.3 and below, it will work, but show the lock screen for a split second, and do the unlock animations. This package comes with both a settings controller and an sbsettings toggle.

PreventSleep – allows you to keep your device cpu and communications (Wifi/3G) up while the screen is still blanked (helps saves battery in situations you still need those things up). This works without any background daemons and on all iOS. This package comes with an sbsettings toggle. Future updates will add an settings controller and an Status bar notification icon.

SBSchedule has been updated and now offers iOS 4 support, and a well requested feature, control over your system and ringtone volume settings. Also quite a few minor requests and issues have been handled as well.

For those of you who don’t know, SBSchedule allows you to create profile groups of various settings for your device, and set them to launch at predefined times, or quickly and easily via any app using an activator shortcut.

SBSchedule can make groups for your brightness, system volume, ringtone volume, respring, and by harnessing SBSettings power, it can also control almost any aspect of your device: 3G, GPS, SSH, Bluetooth, Data, Phone, WiFi, Syslog, Notifications, ActiveSync and much much more…

Some examples include:

• Turn battery hogging features off when you don’t need them, and turn them on when you do.
• Turn your device into an alarm clock with your iPod music player and library.
• Mute your phone when you go to sleep.
• Change your brightness according to a given time of day.

PROTIP1: You can use this app to make your ipod an alarm clock, by installing the “ipod widget” from cydia.
PROTIP2: Set your activator shortcut for SBSchedule to quickly and easily launch your profiles from within any app.

Do you have multiple SpringBoard pages, sorted in some way, and you become annoyed that each time you want to launch an app you need to find it through the different pages ? No more, QuickLauncher automatically knows which apps you use most and allows you to access them from anywhere fast and quickly.

Say you are in Facebook app and want to move to the email app, simply trigger QuickLauncher and select the mail app (which if you use frequently will show up as one of the first icons) without going through SpringBoard. As an added bonus the apps will be shown in SpringBoard-style, meaning you will see how many unread mails you have in the mail badge, etc…

The app is so easy to use, it has no settings, you can simply pick whichever shortcut will activate QuickLauncher via the Activator settings.

SBSchedule allows you to make profiles according to SBSettings toggles and activate them at given times or on the fly (via a configurable shortcut). With the latest update you can also set your device’s backlight as well as the different toggles. With SBSchedule you can auto-mute your phone at nights, disable battery hogging features like push mail/notifications at given times or set your screen brightness according to time of day.

SpringSorter allows you to sort your SpringBoard icons according to how much you use the different apps. It studies how much you use them and allows you to configure which springboard pages to sort, which to protect, and if to sort the icons globally or per page. The new update fixes the holes which were caused by using libhide, fixes the support for 3.1 spotlight and improves performance. It can even lock SpringBoard icons in order to prevent accidental movement.

SnapTap allows you to take pictures and videos using the device’s volume buttons or using the wired headset buttons (works with the builtin camera app, but with many appstore ones as well). The latest updates add a settings pane, optional to mute the shutter sound and fixes compatibility with 3rd party jailbreak apps such as Snappy and Volume Button Extender.

I’ve also released a few new SBSettings toggles which add new functionality or rewritten existing ones:

Ringer/Silent replaces the ringer switch functionality, and allows you to put your device to silent mode from anywhere. Works great also if you have a defective ringer switch or if you want to set your device to auto go to silent at different times with SBSchedule (like at night times).

Push Notifications allows you to set your device’s push notification to on/off at ease. Rewritten from scratch, works the same way that settings.app does and does not mess with any daemons.

Push Mail allows you to set your device’s push mail to on/off at ease. Rewritten from scratch, works the same way that settings.app does.

The possibilities here are limitless, as almost any on/off toggle you have for SBSettings can be grouped with SBSchedule (and Cydia has lots of added toggles, just search for them. Examples include Push Mail, Push Notification and others…).

Examples include turning off battery hogging features while sleeping like the 3G/Wifi/Edge/Bluetooth/GPS and turning them on (or some of them) when waking up in the morning.

You can even download additional toggles from cydia like PushSoundBlock, which will mute all of your Push Notification sounds, and set them to turn on / off when you don’t want to be interrupted.

The GUI is similar to the device’s alarm program, and you can even set timers to go at specific days of the week only.

When syncing with more then 1 server you have the builtin option to sync the data into it’s own group instead of merging it with the iPhone database, in order to avoid conflicts.

Please notice that while this has been tested to work OK with some servers, your millage may vary according to how Apple supports this.

Welcome SnapTap, a program which allows you to use most of the camera picture taking apps (including the built-in one) and take pictures easily using the volume controls.

This app is available on the Cydia Store via BigBoss for 99 cents.

• Rearrange your SpringBoard icons according to how much you use them.
• Allows you to sort icons per page, or globally across all pages.
• Protect pages you don’t want to auto rearrange.
• Set a minimum amount of application usage before starting to move it.
• Create a backup of your SpringBoard icon layout and restore it.
• Manual or on-the-fly operating modes.

After installing SpringSorter it will automatically start to monitor your application usage behind the scenes. You can then start sorting and configurating the program via the settings program on your device.

• Count the number of characters you are sending per SMS message. The number is shown in the “Send” button as you are typing, along with how many parts the message will be split into. The convention is that for english msgs, the character limit is about 160 characters per part, and for non-english ones it’s 70 characters per part.
• Count the number of SMS/MMS messages you have sent globally or per a monthly time period. This information is shown when clicking on the header of the SMS Program, from there you can also manually reset it.

The program settings can be changed from the Settings app on your iPhone, under “SMS Helper” (yes, you can enable / disable the flipping animations from there).

The counter also keeps track of sent messages only while it’s working.
