iPhone 3.1 Hold Off

Author: BigBoss  //  Category: Jailbreak

Apple is pushing v3.1 now. I strongly recommend you do not upgrade. If you have a 3gs, if you update now, you may never be able to jailbreak ever again. If for some reason you think you must upgrade, at the very least make sure that you get your ecid shsh done via the home page of cydia first by clicking the heart. If you didnt do this or dont understand, do not upgrade!

If you have a 3g or 2g, you will probably be ok but you should still wait a few days to see what happens with the jailbreak. 3.0 is plenty stable and there’s no rush to upgrade to 3.1. Also, whatever bug you think you have that it will fix it probably will not fix as is always the case.

As always, will keep updates here and a tutorial posted when jailbreak is released.

From apple, the 3.1 firmware changes are (notice there is nothing about battery or push, so if you have bugs in that area assume they are not fixed for 3.1). None of this seems urgent to me:

iPhone OS 3.1 also includes these features and updates:

  • Improved syncing for music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and photos1
  • iTunes U content organization
  • Redeem iTunes Gift Cards, codes, and certificates in the App Store
  • Display available iTunes account credits in the App Store and iTunes Store
  • Save video from Mail and MMS into Camera Roll
  • Option to ”Save as new clip” when trimming a video on iPhone 3GS
  • Better iPhone 3G Wi-Fi performance when Bluetooth is turned on

  • Remotely lock iPhone with a passcode via MobileMe
  • Use Voice Control on iPhone 3GS with Bluetooth headsets
  • Paste phone numbers into the keypad
  • Option to use Home button to turn on accessibility features on iPhone 3GS
  • Warn when visiting fraudulent websites in Safari (anti-phishing)
  • Improved Exchange calendar syncing and invitation handling
  • Fixes issue that cause some app icons to display incorrectly

Bad things about 3.1 (besides no jailbreak right now):

  • NO MORE AT&T Tethering! You cannot sync your IBCC. You will no longer be able to restore a custom IPCC file to enable tethering on networks that don’t support it.
  • It does not enable MMS. That is a function of the carrier. AT&T will enable on Sept 25th. You don’t need 3.1 for it.
  • It does not speed up the iPhone, it does not increase battery life. (Every firmware update people make these claims, and they’re not true).
  • It probably did not fix (insert a bug you are worried about from 3.0).

Personally, I don’t see anything interesting offered by 3.1. I plan to stay with 3.0 until 3.2 comes out. It’s not even worth the effort of updating.

  1. ed Says:

What about itunes 9. is it safe?

  2. Ptrowski Says:

I would hold off on 9.0. They may have fixed the ability to upload an IPCC to enable tethering.

  3. Anonymous Says:

All jb iphones: patience is a virtue folks so just wait for further announcements:)

  4. richard Says:

@Ptrowski: Tehtering and MMS are enabled in 3.1. So that shouldnt be a problem.

  5. Dynaxfl Says:

Last time when 2.21 came out, i accidentally clicked update button in iTune and I lost the unlock until ultrasn0w came out… this time i’m extremely careful… i just downloaded new firmware and checked the option so iTune will not ask me again about the update.

  6. Andrew Says:

Tethering hacks are now broken on O2 (possibly other carriers) with OS 3.1.

If I remove the PROFILE, tethering option becomes available, with the PROFILE the option to tether disappears.

Don’t upgrade unless you don’t use tethering.

  7. Josh Says:

updating custom IPCC files works file in itunes 9

  8. GPWI Says:

ca i use ITune9 with Jailbreak Phone?

  9. Marc Says:

No more Teathering with 3.1 & iTunes 9. This sucks. Hope u can fix it. Not that I use it much. But do need it to send pics to newspapers.

  10. cheapfame Says:

What do you mean “no more tethering” fool ?

  11. marc Says:

u know what i meant, some of us have to work & read this at the same time. Not just play games.

    Thanks

  12. thelatinist Says:

I have installed iTunes 9.0 and synced several times with my jailbroken 3GS running 3.0.1. My tethering hack still works and I have had no sync problems. I do not have the MMS hack, so I can’t comment on that. I have experienced no problems.

Of course I did *not* update my firmware to 3.1 and will not until we get a jailbreaking solution from the Dev Team.

  13. BigBoss Says:

It’s the 3.1 update that prevents the IPCC. If you have AT&T or such who prevent tethering, an update to 3.1 will shut it down, perhaps for good without a jailbreak.

  14. Birdpuk Says:

BB. Trying to help someone B/u the files in cydia. They are not getting the option after upgrading Cydia on a 3g. Is the process only for 3gs.

  15. Sir Nat Hak Says:

Man I miss the agony of waiting for an update, good times

  16. Saspjr Says:

So what happens if ur ccid has been on files with cydia can u still update and back it up with 3.0 firmware to reverse ur jailbreak same like 3.01

  17. Jon Says:

yeah, i’m on 3.0.1 and itunes 9 works fine, just don’t update until a confirmed jailbreak, probably a new version of redsn0w, is released.

  18. PK Says:

i hit make my life easier supporting the cause and now my phone shows “this iphone 3gs is not hashed for 3.0 too late:(” why is that anyone know

  19. Beyondregion1 Says:

As usual, I download the firmware updates when they come out. But I wait until the SUPREME BEINGS OF IPHONE – The Dev Team – release the necessary tools, preferably PWNage Tool. Also, I won’t upgrade to iTunes 9.0 until I know it’s safe to do so, jailbreaking 3.1 and such.

  20. Legace Says:

    Hi guys.
I’ve got the purplera1n ECID file AND the iBEC/iBSS files. Do I need the ECID SHSH thing?

    Thanks.

  21. ugh Says:

It’s too late anyway, Saurik shut that service down for whatever reason.

  22. Anonymous Says:

He didn’t get a choice. His process involved connecting to the apple servers to get the hash, and they’ve killed it.

  23. macphisto Says:

I’m in the same situation as Legace (I’m on 3.0.1 now, haven’t jailbreaked my 3Gs until now but have already backuped the iBEC/iBSS files and the purplerain ECID several weeks ago).

Do I have to worry or do I have good chances to be able to jailbreak if and when the dev team releases something? I won’t need this ECID SHSH, right (let’s forget the fact that saurik shut that service down for a second).

Any help/answer would be appreciated, thank you! :-)

  24. macphisto Says:

whoopsie! I should learn to read before I write. ;-) Found the answer to my question in the latest blog entry by BigBoss:

    http://thebigboss.org/2009/09/10/3gs-users-cannot-restore-30/

  25. Chris Says:

I have iPhone 3G and I had the tethering hack. I updated to 3.1 because I thought it would fix the AT&T MMS failure but it didn’t. Anyways, tethering still works(have only used it once) but since the update my phone will randomly cut off and I have to hold the home and power button..any idea what’s wrong?

  26. prasys Says:

    Thanks BigBoss

Seems to be nothing major other then some minor tweaks. I expected apple to come up with something better

  27. iLady Says:

I have a jb 3gs with 3.0 fw. which is fine. All is well. I too hit the “Make my life easier” button on cydia so my ECID SHSH is saved. But i did not capture my iBEC/iBSS. I used purplera1n to jb. Not in a hurry to update to 3.1 fw until it’s safe. I have read that it’s ok to update itunes to 9.0 w/ a jb phone. Patience is a virtue.

  28. James Says:

    Att: Big Boss…

I have saved my ECID SHSH through Cydia, but I don’t know what my iBEC/iBSS is, will I still likely be okay or do you think I’m going to have trouble jailbreaking in the future?

    Please respond…thanks in advance!

    James

  29. Whitewolf99 Says:

as (nearly) always ist not worht the effort, but in a few weeks games/apps will demand it. ofc there is no logical reason for that but it was always that way…
lets hope they make 3.2 fast…

  30. jered Says:

I updated… oops… no more tethering. Is there a way to go back to 3.0.1.

Any help here is much appreciated.

  31. ChaoticMayhem65 Says:

question bb. all of the sudden now itunes 8.2.0.10 wont let me do anything with my iphone 3g or 3gs. I tryed hooking up to update the ipcc file and it just gives me a message saying:

Itunes cannot read the contents of the iphone. go to the summary tab in iPhone preferences and click restore to restore this iphone to factory settings.

the phone syncs fine with newer versions of itunes but just not the 8.2.0.10 version that i need to update the ipcc.

  32. ace Says:

I upgraded to 3.1 on my 3G….anyone know how to get back to 3.0 lol I want my jailbreak back….

  33. captain Says:

oh carp! I was half asleep and let iChunes install the “update”. Now I’m half-back-in-jail! I can’t find Cydia… or anything that will respring me to life. My title bar is still hacked, partially… Anyone know how to get back to where I was? either keeping whatever this is (3.1.1?) or back to 3.1 firmware with a nice jailbreak?

    Thanks

  34. Sigma Says:

So if we can’t sync over custom IPCC files, how does that affect those unlocking? I needed to upload a custom IPCC so I could get 3G working with Fido (locked to Rogers).

  35. Erik Says:

BigBoss, I am running a 2G with 1.1.4 firware which is unlocked and jailbroken for use with T-Mobile.
There is a page on iClarified that lists all the available firmware updates. I would like to update my firmware to 3.0 for obvious reasons.
Can I use these restore files with a shift+restore on itunes without any negative repercussions, or is there another process I must use?

Do you have any custom 3.0 firmware updates that I can use to restore up to 3.0 without losing all my modifications?
I’ve been doing this for a while, and I have always used iLiberty+ for my jailbreaking/unlocking activities.
Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated, as I understand and have become quite proficient at doing this….but that’s a really far cry from actually understanding what is really going on when I use the various utilites you and others supply to customize my iPhone.

Feel free to email me, I know you are busy but would appreciate any info you could supply me with to help me update to 3.0 safely.

Thanks for all the work you do, BigBoss. You make my iPhone one of the most useful and fun phones I have ever owned, as well as keeping it and I safe from crashing and having some of the negative experiences that others do when they don’t use common sense(e.g. updating to 3.1 without realizing they will always disable your “forbidden” apps because apple doesn’t design their firmware releases around jailbreaks and doesn’t approve of them in general)…to put it lightly:)

I have had this and only this iPhone 2g since it’s release, and it is thanks to you and the dev team that I haven’t experienced the difficulties and setbacks that others have.

My hat’s off to you, good sir!

  36. Erik Says:

Nope, not until dev team releases a workaround. And then you must jailbreak all over again.

People were giving a tech writer hell on another site for publishing a write-up stating not to update for the reasons already apparent to most that have, most saying that he was, “stating the obvious”.

Well, now we know why he and others do this….there are always people who forget that this happens everytime someone is impatient or forgets and updates before the dev team has ok’d it.

REMEMBER PEOPLE-APPLE UPDATES DON’T CONSIDER, OR CARE ABOUT JAILBREAKS. THEY HATE THEM AND WILL DO EVERYTHING IN THEIR POWER TO CONTROL THEIR SOFTWARE INCLUDING BRICKING UP YOUR iPHONE.

    BE SMART!

  37. sasha Says:

    tempted to update to 3.1

Now I can’t open cyda it crashes as it is loading and my computer just died is their a mobile substrate update I missed and if so how do I get it since I have no computer to resink or restore even if I wanted to.

  39. Pascal Says:

Why are you giving out the 3.1 jailbroken firmware on your site? It looks like this firmware is working but absolutely not. When I try to jailbreak my 3G, I got unable to recognize specified IPSW from redsn0w 0.8.

  40. Cdholic Says:

Hey guys,I have a problem with wifi connection on my jailbroken 3G iPhone. When I use encryption (WPA or WPA2) I receive an “Unable to join network” error. If it’s free with no encryption I have a stable connection every time.I restore to 3.0 and 3.0.1 without jailbreak, reset network settings with no luck.Any suggestions?Thank you.

  41. Warren Says:

I was able to upload an IPCC and enable tethering with 9.0.

  42. J.W. Says:

Same here Pascal, the 3.1 jailbroken firmware isn’t working.

Redsn0ws says: unable to recognize specified IPSW

I hope they find a solution for this problem.

  43. Ryan Says:

Wanna know some wired shit, I went from 3.0jailbroke to 3.1 non jailbroken and I still have cudia and all my cracked apps and settings, the apps don’t work but modedbattery percent 5icon springboard and teathrring all work, it’s really wired, and I can’t delet cydia

  44. UnionJack Says:

    Hi there!

So… is this right then???? The 3.1 firmware is not working at all???? I have just wasted about 3 hours trying to figure out what the problem was with redsn0w 0.8 showing “Unable to recognize specified IPSW!!!”

Come on guys.. you code have at least left some notes on this so people don’t waste a whole afternoon trying to figure it out.

    Cheers
    UJ

  45. flash Says:

Having the same problem as ChaoticMayhem65, 8.2.0.10 is not letting me update the IPCC and giving the same “iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPhone” error. Any suggestions? I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes multiple times.

  46. jpuma Says:

i got new 3gs iphone from apple store and my tethering works after i restore from my backup in itunes 8.2.0.23

  47. oxchronxo Says:

what is wrong with you people. rtfm before you update. read read read read and then read it all again. all of your stupid questions are already answered by the dev team. stop posting questions here about problems that you could have avoided.
loosers, hahahahahah got what you deserve

  48. badghost Says:

    use ifunbox or winscp to
    “private-var-mobile-media”
    delete itunes_control folder

    and sync again
    that should solve the problem
