I have pushed v2.99.4 out which is mainly to add the enhanced icon selector screen. Those of you on older devices like 2g, 3g with lower memory may have experienced a lot of crashing trying to select an icon for a folder. The more icon addon packs you install, the worse the problem was.
This version of categories changes the behavior by separating the icons into icon packs. Now when you select an icon, you will be given a list of icon themes. You select that and only view the icons in that theme. This way less icons are loaded at a time and you should avoid running out of memory.
Here is how it looks:
To anyone making an icon pack, icon locations have moved, and existing icon packs need to be updated. I have updated all the ones I host. Icons go in /var/mobile/Library/Categories/Icons/packname folder. Please try to keep the icons in the folder under 100 and group them together if you have a lot of icons.

That’s much better, it was always a pain to select an icon.
But I find it easier to theme the icons using Winterboard.

Does this fix the issue where SpotBright would stop working if you used Categories 2.99 beta 2?

Spotbright is not recommended or maintained any longer by its developer. It used to be valuable because it would allow for launching hidden apps in spotlight. But libhide handles this internally since a few versions back. In addition, I am not aware of any specific issues. If you have some specific issue, please email with it. This would not be a categories issue, but a compatibility with libhide. In either case, this update did not address it.

Sounds like cydia crashed. Reinstall categories.

I did email you via cydia when I noticed the issue.
I don’t use SpotBright for it’s ability to handle hidden apps, but it’s feature of showing the last 6 applications used in the spotlight springboard page.
With the old Categories (before 2.99beta) the last 6 used apps would show up normally within spotlight, since installing the beta those 6 little icons don’t show up anymore.

I have this problem as well. Cydia will not open anymore.
Categories shows v2.99.4 so it seems that the install completed successfully.
BigBoss, you say to reinstall categories. Is this still the case if Categories installed sucessfully?

When you move the Standard “Mail” App in a category, the menu “Mail, Contacts, Calender” in Settings disappears.
So you have to move the Mail-App back to the Springboard to change settings or add accounts.

I can confirm this, I pretty much only use Categories (using the SB addon), I have 5 categories on my dock and I leave the rest of the screen empty, it’s a nice minimal look. I get the settings issues as you describe,

Settings wont show the prefs for hidden apps. Same is true for safari. Safari also wont play youtube videos if youtube app is hidden. It’s been like this for a long time. Not sure what to do about it yet.

I can’t do custom icons with this version of Categories. I try to SSH the icons out to my mac and they don’t show up on my mac. I try to SSH them into my iPhone and they don’t show up on the phone!
What am I doing wrong? I’m using Cyberduck – the old version worked for me but this one doesn’t :(

I found a strange conflict. I modified my other.artwork file to change the UILCDBackground.png image to be transparent. After changing it, both Categories nor SBSettings “More” will crash shortly after loading.
When I restore the original file, they work again. Any thoughts? I like having it transparent so that LockInfo looks cleaner.

I was wondering if I could make a bit of a feature request for Categories… but couldn’t find the right place to do it.
I have all of my social apps like Facebook, Twitter, Meebo, and such in a folder.
Could you make the notifications add up and put a notifier number on the folder? I don’t know if that’s possible. Just wondering.

you should add in the doc the following advice :
DO NOT put the Youtube app in a folder, if you do so, the YouTube links in Safari won’t work anymore !
It took me 2 full restores to figure that was the cause to the problem…

I’m using Categories v2.29 – its by far the best app for jailbroken devices.
1 thing. I have certain apps (safari, youtube) restricted on my iphone, but when i do a search in spotlight- i’m able to access those restricted apps.
how do i keep them restricted?

Bit of an issue here -
I SCPed the icons to my desktop to make new ones, but most of them appear to be broken. Only the ‘A Collection’, ‘A Folder Collection’, ‘BB Gray’, and ‘Ranova Collection’ icons will open in Photoshop or Finder. The remainder give the error “Could not complete your request because the file-format module cannot parse the file” in Photoshop and show up as blank icons in Preview.
On a side note, can we (or me) get template icon PSDs?

I just updated to Categories v2.99.7 and for some reason the Categories Icon disappears. I have Removed and Reinstalled it about 2-3 times but still no Icon.
BTW I have a iTouch 1G.

For some days i have got a Problem that categories is Not availeble in cydia. Everytime i try to Downloa. Categories the Message “the Source is Not availeble, please Download more sources” follows.
