Dev team released redsn0w 0.9.6b4 to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 devices. Before you jump on the “update” bandwagon, let me warn you (for those that have not been reading my current posts). You may have a tethered jailbreak. I recommend not updating for anyone that falls into this situation:
1) iPhone 3g devices – no problems
2) iPhone 3gs devices – if you have newer bootrom, your jailbreak will be tethered. If you have older bootrom, you will not have tethered jailbreak.
3) iPhone 4 – tethered.
4) iPod 3/4 – tethered.
5) iPod 2 – MC model tethered, older model not tethered.
6) iPad – tethered.
Again, tethered means that after you jailbreak, you will have to rerun redsn0w every time you reboot.
Also, current redsn0w seems to have an issue uploading the payload. It took me about 20 tries. Eventually it worked. If the progress bar stops moving while “uploading payload” at all, it failed. Reset the iPhone, close redsn0w, and repeat.

I have 3GS with baseband 05.11.07 with OS 3.1.2 …should I upgrade to OS 4.0.2 (regular upgrade, no jb) so that I get the newest jailbreakable baseband (05.13.04) and THEN upgrade to a 4.2.1 jbroken IPSW?

if you want it jailbroken it will work, but the unlock (ultrasn0w) wont. limera1n and greenpois0n will only jailbreak it to install cydia, from cydia you install ultrasn0w. Its not updated yet so be patient.

ultrasn0w will for up to 4.0.1 for now. stay away from 4.2.1 because that baseband upgrade might not be unlocked for a long while.

No reason. Ultrasn0w works back to 4.26.x. Older basebands are actually easier to unlock and carry a higher resale value.

I JB’ed my 3G but Cydia caused starting it in safe boot. I had to set up my 3G again with 4.2.1

I jailbroke and got Cydia OK, got apps back – but for some reason SBSettings causes drop into safe mode, with the “mobile substrate did bot cause this” etc. error. Rebooting etc. does not stop this only removing SBSettings seems to work (tried all other add-ons remove individually as well). I have tried restoring completely and re-jailbreaking, but same happens. 3G , 16gb, ios 4.2.1 O2 UK unlocked

Same here – I ended up removing sbsettings and sbsettingstoggle – Also downloaded Crash Reporter and it says that Sbsettings is the culprit – please fix this- Sbsettings is THE most important feature on my iPhone!!

This time Cydia-installation worked fine.

If you are running WIn7 and the progress bar is stuck during uploading payload, configure Redsn0w.exe to run in XP SP3 compatibility mode. That solved the problem for me.

I have JB’ed my new iphone4 and have cydia running. I have 4.2.1 (8C148) as the version and 03.10.01 as the firmware.
I want to unlock for any network but suspect that the firmware is at a version that ultrasn0w won’t unlock. Is this the case?

Does anyone have an idea why my 3GS keeps on freezing (screen unresponsive unless i toogle sleep/wake button, it works for a few seconds then freezes again)after 4.1 update… used pwnage to JB it… im running baseband 5.13.04… I noticed that memory drops to less than 10mb to zero when it freezes up… i use the app iMemory to check memory usage! I reinstalled it 5 times now and JB it and still the same thing happens.

I know, its not 4.2.1 but its a Cydia problem.
I downgraded from 4.2.1 to 3.2.2 on iPad
I jailbreaked with RedSn0w 0.9.6b4
works except when you install anything from Cydia it wants to remove Cydia.
Is the new Cydia 4.* only or should it still work in 3.2.2?

Help. Got iPhone4, did the tethered jailbreak, now 7,2GB of my Data is shown as “Other Data” meaning it’s neither Movie, Sound nor an App. but apparently waist! When I attempt 2 reset the iPhone 2 Factory settings I fail, ( is there a Sekret Approach how 2 “unjailbreak” the phone again? If not, how can I get rid off the apparently ” trash-Data” that claim half of my Phones Limited -15 GB Memory? Pls help, am desperate ( but still smiling about my clumsiness)

I am really new to this, but I was able to jailbreak and unlock my Iphone 3G (new to me), earlier. I am running 4.1 and I am lucky enough to run 5.08, so the unlock on baseband 5.14 was easy with FuzzyBand (now 5.13). Can I upgrade to 4.2 and jailbreak/unlock without any issues again? Is there any advantage to going to 4.2?

Whenever I try installing apps via cydia (mainly bigboss apps) it crashes my ipad after the ios4.2.1 upgrade. I followed the directions for the redsn0w jb and everything works fine except installing apps via cydia..i end up getting the apple logo and it doesn’t go away. End result? I have to restore and jb all over again. Why is the crash happening?

I’m using an iPhone 3G (Jailbroken on 4.2.1 with Redsn0w) and the big problem that I’m having is that anytime I try to switch apps using the multitasking bar, it crashes. Every. Single. Time. I’ve reloaded RedSn0w and done the Cydia-recommended updates… but it still crashes every time. I can run Pandora in the bg and what not… but if try to switch directly, not happening.
Any suggestions? I’m trying to avoid a factory restore or downgrade to 4.1… but I’m open to anything.

Well unless you have an older model (MB instead of MC) you’re tethered, which means that you have to run the Redsn0w jailbreak every time you reboot the phone.

I’m having the same problems as a lot of other people are. I have an iPhone 3G on 4.2.1 with baseband 5.15.04. I jailbroke using redsn0w and my phone also goes into safe mode randomly. Every time I got a text with BiteSMS (trial version) it would cause Springboard to crash. Also sometimes it would crash when getting a text to regular Messaging while in other apps.
I see other people talking about SBSettings being the culprit. Should I get rid of it? Thanks.

Hey guys and gals, i need help. So i updated my iphone 3g to 4.2.1 and it was jailbroken with redsn0w. Everything was going good until my phone started crashing. Everytime im on a app and i get a notification to switch to another app(for instance text alert) my phone crashes and goes into safe mode. I mean i tried the Crash reporter, and it crashes in the crash reporter -_-. I really need some help. Can i install something or am i doomed until i get a new phone??
