Categories v2.29 is released tonight. This should fix the issue (that was very hard to reproduce) where icons were duplicated for some people and not removed off springboard.
I plan to rewrite the icon selector screen next to show pages of icons rather than load them all at once. The way it currently is takes up too much memory. For now, you will have to use “edit” to change your icon until this is done.
Right now, I am focusing on stability releases. I believe most the internal rewrite is completed and changes will not be as radical as have been for 2.25-2.28.

I just want to thank you for such an awesome app!! Seriously, this app is the app that makes everything else that much more enjoyable! Your hard work is greatly appreciated!!!
November 30th, 2009 at 1:15 am
I know that Categories was going to implement some of the features that Categories SB had. If we were not part of the beta testings, does this release require us to uninstall the previous version of Categories (v. 2.27.2) and Categories SB before installation of v2.29? Is Categories SB no longer needed? Thanks for all your hard work.
November 30th, 2009 at 2:29 am
Ill be great to create some sub-folder, just a tougt.
November 30th, 2009 at 5:27 am
Categories SB is an addon to categories. You don’t need to uninstall anything. An update of both in Cydia should be sufficient.
November 30th, 2009 at 8:10 am
Hi, I just discovered this nice App (new iPhone user)! Could You make more customizing please? E.g. different folder designs/colours und other font colours besides white. The grey folders look a bit…at least for me. The reason for the font colour is that is just discovered winterboard, too and I changed the background. XD
November 30th, 2009 at 8:44 am
You can. After you tap “Add”, just select a folder and it becomes a sub-folder (folder within folder).
(At least…this works with Categories w/ CategoriesSB.)
November 30th, 2009 at 9:01 am
Thanks again for this fantastic program (both Categories & CategoriesSB). Being an app junkie, this has given me a way to organize the hundreds of programs on my phone.
I just want to make another plug for a feature since you’re re-writing the icon selection interface. Can you include support for icon sub-folders? Maybe it can be logical (i.e. sub-directories) or virtual (i.e. based on author/filter name like “ks03_purple” or “ranova”)? First icon would be the icon for that folder? Bold or underline the icon_text_name to indicate it’s a folder? Just throwing out ideas here as I type. Would be nice instead of having to page all the way to the bottom to select the icon you want.
Anyway, thanks again for this great program!
November 30th, 2009 at 9:28 am
You only see grey folders? There should be hundeds of different types and colors of folders to choose from.
As for the font color, you have to use something else to change that. I’m not sure what app does that, but someone else probably can tell you. I know FontSwap can change the font style though.
November 30th, 2009 at 11:34 am
Hello Thanks again for this great app. today I upgraded from the previous version and now when I create a new categorie Im not able to select the icon I want like i was able to in the previous version.
Do you know how to fix this?
thanks a lot in advance
November 30th, 2009 at 11:53 am
*category sorry..
and BTW I got it.
thanks anyway.
November 30th, 2009 at 12:29 pm
hm, give me a hint where to look. i downloaded it today via Cydia. Works fine sofar. I discovered that I can change font colour inside the folder but I would prefer a different colour on the main page (I think it is the “springboard thing” – sorry Im not an english guy). I only found the little exclamation mark inside each folder and the app itself. nothing inside the iphone setting. i have parallel installed “winterboard and backgrounder”
November 30th, 2009 at 1:49 pm
Thank you so much for an awesome program!
I was just wondering, after updating libhide and Categories I am having issues with syncing with iTunes saying it’s always trying to install games and apps that I have installed already. I also installed Pkgbackup not sure if it’s Categories or Pkgbackup.
Anybody else having those issues or insight?
November 30th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
found it. didnt know i could edit the folder itself. nice app.
November 30th, 2009 at 3:55 pm
Nevermind, I got it. it was a bug within PkgBackup.
November 30th, 2009 at 4:06 pm
I haven’t updated as yet, so I’ll look out for this.
But…this sounds like the issue other people had mentioned on iTunes. Symptom is that you’ll receive notification from iTunes for an update, you download it, but it never takes.
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2240411&tstart=285
I’ve experienced this problem myself. It’s my belief that it’s an iTunes-App-Store-driven problem.
My only solution so far is to wait a day when the problem occurs. After a day, download the update(s) again with iTunes and see if it takes and the badge/icon changes. After this, then sync your iPhone with iTunes. (If you don’t wait, you’ll have to delete the app, then sync it back again.)
Of course, this doesn’t mean it’s not a JB-app-driven problem. Just that other people are having it and it started weeks ago.
November 30th, 2009 at 4:27 pm
Can you add a feature to organize the apps within a category either alphabetically or by drag drop?
Awesome app, I’ve been using it for a while including subcategories with no problems. I’m looking forward to the improved icon selection too!
November 30th, 2009 at 4:38 pm
Hi
is there à page where I can Download the previous versions of the categories App? It’s because since I Updated to Version 2.28 and later2.29 I cannot delete à Folder that I created with an older version. So I thought I’d install for example version 2.26 again to delete that folder.
Thanks in advance. Bye
November 30th, 2009 at 4:51 pm
with the new incorporation of horizontal scrolling, is it possible to change the background of each page? this would open up so many new theming ideas!
November 30th, 2009 at 6:19 pm
You didnt even read the main post before commenting did you :(
November 30th, 2009 at 6:20 pm
This is not related to categories. Probably a wifi connection or 3g connection issue to apple.
November 30th, 2009 at 6:21 pm
You can delete the folder out of /Applications using ifile or SSH (winscp or such).
November 30th, 2009 at 9:41 pm
Again This is the app to jb, this is the UI the iPhone should have been. Hope Apple will give you CREDIT if they copie your idea. Looking forward to have the “back” button or a swap left to right to get up one folder as windows explorer Instead of the home button.
November 30th, 2009 at 11:43 pm
Is it possible to return to the folder instead of the springboard? I’m guessing it falls under the same problem that one would have if one tried to delete from the folder.
December 1st, 2009 at 12:19 am
I think SmartScreen and Categories together are not so helthful.
Just crashing all the time. Uninstalled Catergories, the phone still crash. Uninstalled SmartScreen, the phone ok. Installed just categories, the phone ok.
December 1st, 2009 at 12:38 am
I have done this (using iFile), but the application still appears in Categories, although the name of the folder appears as “(null)”. If I hit edit > delete for this folder, then when I respring and relaunch Categories it is still there.
What can I do?
December 1st, 2009 at 3:37 am
I had to restore my iPhone. After, my Categories did not work properly. I took all apps out of folders, deleted folders, deleted Categories and reinstalled version 2.29 and I also purchased categoriesSB.
When I open Categories to make the new folders I have 2 old folders which remain. Both have (null) (0) bold on top with /Applications/ and folder name in gray under. I remove them and they continue to show up. I also have a problem with crashes when I try to add icons.
Hope you can help. Survive with this app.
December 1st, 2009 at 6:49 am
This is more or less my plan (icon groups).
December 1st, 2009 at 6:53 am
While it is not possible to rearrange icons within a category folder itself, you *can* rearrange the icons using the Categories application.
Tap the desired category, then rearrange the items by tapping and dragging the “three-lines” icon at the right of each item.
December 1st, 2009 at 6:55 am
Since version 2.27, there are now two parts to a category: the directory under /Applications, and a preferences file. For example:
/Applications/Games.app
/var/mobile/Library/Preferences/com.bigboss.categories.Games.plist
You must delete both of these.
December 1st, 2009 at 6:59 am
I’m assuming that you are talking about CategoriesSB (since Categories has had a form of horizontal scrolling for quite a while).
CategoriesSB doesn’t provide an official method for having per-page backgrounds, and I currently don’t plan to add one.
However, I do not currently restrict the size of the background image, so it *might* be possible to use, for example, a double-width image to provide a two-page effect. I don’t know how it would affect performance, though.
December 1st, 2009 at 7:00 am
Coming in the next CategoriesSB release.
December 1st, 2009 at 7:01 am
CategoriesSB can do this; normal Categories cannot (due to the fact that folders run as separate applications).
December 1st, 2009 at 7:02 am
According to your findings, it sounds like the problem is SmartScreen, and has nothing to do with Categories.
However, if you find that there is a problem with Categories (or CategoriesSB) please drop me an email.
December 1st, 2009 at 7:05 am
Please see my reply (just posted) to number 11 above.
If you still have trouble, please drop me an email.

thanks guys!

Hi, brill app, just what iPhone needs as springboard has pages of apps. I installed yesturday with new update, now my problem is I can make folders and sub folders but they don’t disapear from springboard. I have read the update and said it has fixed this problem but not on mine for some reason? Any ideas on how to fix this big please. Keep up the good work.
December 1st, 2009 at 12:57 pm
just updated to 2.29 after updating to os 3.1.2. When I add icons to folders, they stay on the springboard, but also show up in the folder. Ive used to cydia to uninstall and then reinstall categories, but that doesnt help.
how can I fix this?
December 1st, 2009 at 1:33 pm
Thanks for the reply. How does one implement this? I have CategoriesSB and I can’t seem to find a way to bounce back to the folder instead of the springboard.
December 1st, 2009 at 4:37 pm
Alright sweet! I’ll try that an see if it works/hurts performance. Thanks!
Oh and any support on blank apps? There used to be a pseudo way but it doesn’t work now :(
December 1st, 2009 at 5:35 pm
Thanks. This worked!
December 1st, 2009 at 7:31 pm
Wow, instant navigation! (Using Categories 2.29 and CategoriesSB I mean.) The time has finally come for me to replace Springjumps (also a brilliant app) with this more flexible approach.
But I have one concern and a few suggestions:
First, is this risky in any way? Can I permanently lose access to my apps by if an inopportune crash occurs? What folder(s) should I backup to prevent this?
Suggestion 1: A back navigation button was suggested above (presumably to be placed in the title bar). In addition to this, I’m sure theme designers would like to have an option to place Category shortcuts inside the folder itself. Then you could teleport instantly to related folders, or have up/previous/next buttons, go to the root, etc. This would also enable navigation for people who disable the title bar.
Suggestion 2: I’m sure you’ve already had requests for populating folders with drag & drop – I second this. Finding the correct 16 apps for a folder in a long alphabetical list is a major pain, especially when the phone resprings every time you exit to check the springboard. If this is not forthcoming soon, how about at least an option to sort the list by what springboard page each app appears on? Many people probably have the apps they want in a folder grouped together on the springboard.
Thanks for a great app!
December 1st, 2009 at 8:15 pm
Hi,
How about when an app has a push notification, categories adds these up and they appear on the category?
that would help a lot!
December 1st, 2009 at 8:16 pm
I just paid for Categories SB and boy was it worth it. this is the best iphone app ever (and the only one I have paid for).
December 1st, 2009 at 8:20 pm
i have purchased the catergoriessb and have been trying to install it but it goes right back to my itouch home screen coming all the way out of cydia when i look it doesn’t seem like this nor categories is installing. i have firmware 3.1.1 what can i do? i had to redo the whole itouch bc it stopped working now categories will not work.
December 1st, 2009 at 11:14 pm
It would not hurt to mention in the upgrade screen that your old folders may disappear. Mine did when upgrading from ver 2.26 and it is no fun to recreate everything. Caveat emptor.
December 2nd, 2009 at 1:42 am
Sorry, gonna have to email you. It is not as easy as it sounds. Don’t want to botch things. Need address please.
Thank You
December 2nd, 2009 at 7:04 am
I also am having the same exact problem… All my old folders are there with the same apps i had in them but the icons are missing and replaced with (null) (#) and when i try to edit with the arrow it crashes when i do a swipe and the menu pops up it crashes after i select icon. Please help i love the app. Also is it possible to get a built in back up system so categories will put the apps back in the the folders after a restore. This would be extremely helpful!!!
December 2nd, 2009 at 9:09 am
Perhaps I misunderstood. Do you mean that you want to return to a category from a sub-category, or to return to a category after running an application?
If you mean the latter, no, this is not currently possible with CategoriesSB.
December 2nd, 2009 at 9:12 am
This is coming in CategoriesSB version 1.4.
December 2nd, 2009 at 9:14 am
You upgraded directly from 2.26 to 2.29, and your folders disappeared? If so, this is a bug and needs to be addressed; please send me an email with the details.
December 2nd, 2009 at 1:04 pm
I’m having a difficult time figuring out how to mainstream the theming of categories due to the new name system.
Before I would ask end-users to create folders labeled “More Games”, “More Apps”, and “More Utilities” and would only new to make background images for More Games.app and More Apps.app, etc. Now that they are now being created as “Category000.app” and “Category001.app”, this is going to create a mess for themers. The end-user will then need to find the name of the category in the app, then SSH into their phone and rename the folders.
I try to make themes as easy as possible to install. Is there any other way around this?
December 2nd, 2009 at 1:52 pm
Can anyone help me? Does this app work with 2g os 3.0.1? it hasn’t worked so far before i mess it up should i give up? Is anyone able to help me with this at all.
December 2nd, 2009 at 2:27 pm
Yes. I meant the latter. From what you stated, it doesn’t even sound possible. That’s too bad for clumsy people like myself who often push the wrong icon. Going back to the folder would be convenience. Thanks for replies.
December 2nd, 2009 at 5:08 pm
just upgraded to 2.29 and when I open the app, all of my folders are gone. They still exist on the SB, but I cannot edit or delete them in the app.
December 3rd, 2009 at 8:10 am
i’ve got this problem. After i installed Categories, i deleted my game app from the folder that i created. Everytime when i open that folder, it will show up my deleted app icon for an sec, then back to the normal screen.
December 3rd, 2009 at 10:17 am
Same for me! Please help/
December 3rd, 2009 at 3:59 pm
This happened to me. I ended up deleting them manually.
Go to private/var/stash/applications
Find the folders then delete them (“Games.app, Apps.app, etc).
For me, they still showed up as “null” in the Categories app, so I had to go into private/var/mobile/library/preferences and deleted the plists for them (“com.bigboss.categories.games…”, something like that).
December 4th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
Thanks for all the great work. Cam here to solve a problem, but it was already handled above in 11.
Thank again and please keep up the work.
December 4th, 2009 at 1:05 pm
Thank you for your great contributions to the iPhone community, BigBoss. Categories is definitely the most useful package available. Without it my springboard would be absolute mess.
Categories has worked just fine for me, and the only errors I have encountered have been minor. Not only that but they were Easily fixed with a respring. Thanks again.

I can’t promise anything, but I’ll add it to my “try-todo-list”.
December 5th, 2009 at 12:14 am
Please email me with the details of your problem.
(This site is not a support forum, and I do not often read the messages here).
December 5th, 2009 at 5:57 am
THANK YOU
December 5th, 2009 at 5:59 am
Just open up that folder, wait for that icon to disappear. Then close the folder immediately. Next time you open the folder up again your icon will be gone.
December 5th, 2009 at 8:23 pm
My experience has been that the name of the folder (I.e More Apps) is what is themed, not the application000, etc
December 6th, 2009 at 11:04 am
great job, one problem I found last night:
I have a folder with security stuff, I wanted to add kirikae, but categories will always show the load icons , please wait screen. I can scroll and it entered kirikae there, but that looks like a small glitch to me. Got a syslog if you need one
December 7th, 2009 at 3:52 am
When is the next update due?
Having problems assigning new icons to folders as it crashes when I load them.
Love and appreciate your hard work Big Boss

I seem to have an orphaned category titled ‘Food’ on my Springboard. Note: I just upgraded to 3.1.2.
I had a similar null problem that a commenter above did. I also had an extra Food category.
If I recall, I deleted these files:
/Applications/Food.app
/var/mobile/Library/Preferences/com.bigboss.categories.Food.plist
and then I wiped clean & redid ALL my categories.
For some reason the ‘Food’ category is still there. In fact, I have two of them called ‘Food’. If I click the ‘good’ one, I can see my food apps. If I click the bad one, it just flashes for a second and then returns me to the springboard.
I can’t seem to delete this extra one.
With the upgrade to categories 2.29 you now use this structure:
com.bigboss.categories.Category000.plist
com.bigboss.categories.Category001.plist
etc.
This numbered categories within the Categories app exactly matches the number of categories I have, which is 8. But the extra Food category makes 9.
Where else might this orphaned category live?
December 7th, 2009 at 11:00 am
If you can send me (via email: gaizin AT gmail) a syslog from after the crash and/or the crash reporter logs for Categories, I’ll look into it.
If you are unfamiliar with where to find these files, there are a couple of tools available via Cydia that might be useful: LogMailer and Crash Reporter.
December 7th, 2009 at 11:03 am
The name of an icon (not just category icons) comes from the applications Info.plist file. You might try looking through all of your apps in /Applications and /var/mobile/Applications to see if any of the Info.plist files contain “Food”. A simple grep would probably be the easiest way to do it.
If you still have trouble, please send me an e-mail.
December 7th, 2009 at 11:38 am
I am having weird problem i can’t seem to change the icon for the folder. If i change the icon it changes the icon of one off the app inside the folder in categories app. Really weird bug.
December 7th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
You da man!
Ran this from those 2 folders:
find . -type f -name “*.plist” -exec grep -i “Food” {} \; -print
and found the file I needed to delete. I had renamed it to ‘temp’ when I was having the null problem and then must have forgotten I called it ‘temp’.
All is well!
December 7th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
Same as everyone else – tops app.
For some reason your app won’t see Bookmarks made by Safari if they are saved onto the home screen. Using os 3.1.2 jailbroken using blackra1n and latest ctatagories version at December 7th 2009 downloaded through Rock installer ap.
December 7th, 2009 at 2:23 pm
anyone else seeing this, its in all my categories
December 7th, 2009 at 9:16 pm
I have upgraded to 2.29 and it has stopped working, will not let me save icons in folders. after I make changes and respring no icons are in folders , I go back into categories and all the folders show 0 , I have even tried creating a new folder and adding icons and no luck

hi. i’m having the same problem (only gray folders – no icons but i can change colours). how do i get the “hundreds of icons” to show up so i can apply them to my folders? cydia upgraded my categories app the other day and i’ve had lots of trouble trying to delete old folders i couldn’t edit, so i’m not sure if i’ve got a crappy install or not. i’m also still only on v3.0, does that make a difference to this version of categories? do i need to install anything else? thanks..
December 9th, 2009 at 5:39 pm
I don’t know where to post/mail suggestions so here it goes:
1 – A left side button for options and right side button for quitting should be added to the category folder title bar
2 – Do we know if something is possible regarding moving or deleting (or why not just “putting back” in the springboard) an app of a category folder ?
Thanks !
December 10th, 2009 at 7:51 pm
This is a great application. How ever I just realised that if I have more than 100 items in the categories, it will block the youtube – m.youtube.com. Is this a constraint in Iphone OS or it is a bug in Category?
Thanks
December 11th, 2009 at 2:14 am
Correction to what I have mentioned. The root cause is when youtube application is added in the Category, youtube will be block.
December 11th, 2009 at 5:56 pm
can i get the apps icon and games icon i a 128×128 size and not a 60×60 size
December 12th, 2009 at 1:44 pm
Man, I just updated, and all my folders disappeared in Categories. They still appear on my springboard, but I can’t edit any of them. :( How can I get them back without losing the apps inside them?
December 12th, 2009 at 3:26 pm
The good news is your apps are lost. The icons to the apps are hidden.
You can always unhide them using one of the popular utilities. I use SBSettings and that works pretty well.
If you haven’t loaded it yet, I’d also recommend SpotBright. It enhances the iPhone’s Spotlight search feature so you can run hidden apps.
Also, you might try to Email the author through the application’s Author link in Cydia. He may need a file or two to determine if there’s a bug that needs to be fixed.
Best of luck.
December 12th, 2009 at 8:26 pm
Same here! I want to add new apps into the folder that i wanted but i cant find them in Categories 2.29 but they are on my spring board?
Is there an easier way to solve this?
is it a bug??
December 12th, 2009 at 10:23 pm
great app!! but plz plz add the ability to include webclips in folders.
If not, do u know of an easy way to convert bookmarks into apps?
December 13th, 2009 at 11:29 am
me too.
I sent an email the bigboss, but haven’t gotten a reply yet.
December 14th, 2009 at 1:12 am
RE: No Splash Screen (i.e. Default.png)
I am using Whitoken theme and created 4 Categories Folders (Home, Media, Apps, Games) for it. I wonder why the splash screen (i.e. Default.png) doesn’t show up whenever i get into each folder?
Thanks.
December 14th, 2009 at 10:50 am
After uploading the latest version of this app my phone has become jacked up. I cannot edit or remove old folders or edit new ones. I have uninstalled the program but the problems remain. You want us to email you questions, but I cant find an email address here to do that. Perhaps publishing it here would make sence. At this point i’d just like to know how to remove the app and get back to useing my phone.
December 14th, 2009 at 11:00 am
Are you at the bigboss@thebigboss.org address?
December 15th, 2009 at 1:59 am
It seems like it’s more of an libhide issue. You can just hide the icon and have the same issue. I’ve emailed bigboss, hope there is a fix soon.
December 15th, 2009 at 4:35 am
placing categories on the dock with saurik’s five icon dock causing crash. i was using 4 folders + 1 app on the dock.
December 15th, 2009 at 4:57 am
disregard my previous post, one of the folder is crashing.
December 15th, 2009 at 12:24 pm
I’d like to know when there is a fix to this. I’m having the same problem.
I can’t edit folders I created before the update to v2.29. They don’t show up in categories at all.
December 16th, 2009 at 4:46 pm
i was just about to put on inav and found out that categories didnt work :( ahhhhh
December 18th, 2009 at 7:42 am
Is there a way to save my categories, so that when I update firmware & re-jailbreak, I won’t have to recreate the categories manually? Thanks
December 19th, 2009 at 9:06 am
How can I change the icons, I can’t find the icon changer button in categories
December 19th, 2009 at 3:44 pm
I’ve noticed a possible bug in Categories. In creating new categories, the category /Applications/Category002.app does not show up on the Springboard. Category001 does, and so does Category003 and subsequent numbers (thus far). Respringing, restarting doesn’t seem to make a difference.
Might be just my device, but didn’t know if others have had a similar experience. My workaround is to create the Category002 folder, label it “Bug” and just not put anything in it.

Hi, I often use the “Backgrounder” app, I would find it very useful if the icon badge marking the backgrounded applications be visible also if they are inside a Categories folder… Thanks!!

I was hoping to see this problem listed so as maybe to find a solution, but after upgrading to the most recent version of Categories, my battery has been completely out of whack. I’ve been using Categories for several months with no problems, then recently I added a new folder and now my battery will deplete in about an hour. At first I couldn’t figure out what was going on, but after a bunch of trial and error and deleting various apps, I narrowed it down to Categories.
It’s at the point where as soon as I add the app back, my phone immediately starts losing battery power at about 1% a minute. The instant I remove it, the battery stays at whatever percentage it was at and begins operating normally again. I have a friend who is experiencing similar problems, so I was hoping I wasn’t alone and maybe someone would have a solution.
Other than this issue, which is a major one for me and caused to have to keep Categories off my phone, the app actually functions fine. No missing icons, no folders that I can’t delete, none of the problems described by everyone above. It’s just totally killing my battery.

I just upgraded and now I can’t see my old folders in the GUI.
I did have the Categories app in a Utilities folder. Could this have been the issue?
December 22nd, 2009 at 4:13 pm
Great app! But what do I do after a firmware restore or upgrade? it wipes out all the folders and it’s a pain to re-create every time. Is there a way to back up the configuration files (where are they stored?) so I can put them back? Or is there another solution? Anyone run into this?
December 23rd, 2009 at 12:24 pm
This also happened to me…
I don’t want to do anything until a fix comes out?
don’t want to make it worse.
I have over 150 apps in Categories and do not wish to have to manually delete everything via SSH and recreate… Is it possible to fix this and re-discover these with a ver 2.3 perhaps?
Thanks for a most awesome app!

Just adding my request for this feature as well, if possible.
December 24th, 2009 at 7:52 am
Found the issue: for some reason, that folder was set not to appear on the Springboard. I fixed it with Poof!
December 24th, 2009 at 9:09 am
I am having a battery issue as well. But mine is different. I am getting a strange error when my battery is low.
Getting this message.
Low Battery
345678% of batter remaining
This happened after I upgraded Categories.
December 24th, 2009 at 9:10 am
Fixed my own issue. Used ifile from Cydia, removed the old folders and created new ones.
December 24th, 2009 at 11:27 am
I second that!
Btw, I have the same problem as mentioned above, my old categories I can no longer edit now… Anyone has a solution?
December 24th, 2009 at 11:31 am
I second that!
Btw, I have the same problem as mentioned above: folders from a previous version are still there, but they don’t show up in the Categories app, hence I can no longer edit them…
Furtermore: brilliant app! It’s, together with Backgrounder, my sole reason for jailbraiking.
December 25th, 2009 at 10:30 pm
I third that!
I’m just upgrade categories from 2.22 to 2.29,
then the old created folders disappeared in new categories, but they still on my springboard.
How can I solve it?
December 26th, 2009 at 11:03 am
I’ve had this same problem. Curiously, if I open an old folder from the SB and press the info icon, it says it’s running v2.22, while opening Categories directly says v2.29.
December 28th, 2009 at 7:16 pm
I also have the same problem and also have 2.22 in the folder and 2.29 in Categories.. seems odd.. hope there’s a fix.
December 31st, 2009 at 3:37 am
I wonder why the splash screen (i.e. Default.png) of my Categories folder doesn’t show up?
Is it only me or what? I’m using 3GS…
January 2nd, 2010 at 8:16 pm
Been using cat for a long time now, I could have sworn I read sumwhere that it’s impossible to support icons for safari bookmarks, can sum1 confirm this as never, or just not yet as this is the only thing I can find from making this possibly the most useful app on all of iTunes/cydia/etc thx
January 3rd, 2010 at 6:09 pm
after i deleted these files i had to install poof and unhide the icons. Hope this helps
January 4th, 2010 at 8:56 am
Great app. I just got into the jailbreak thing over the holidays. Have to admit I doubt I will ever go back to the default look.
I see my question has been addressed a bunch here so I will just say that I am looking forward to the icon selection remake. I was sure it was a memory issue the way it would crash out.
Thanks for making my iphone experience much better!

Same problem here. Sure would like some help with it!

Do I have to remove apps from the categories folder before I uninstall. Will uninstalling Categories without moving the apps out delete the apps?
January 9th, 2010 at 2:19 pm
I had Categories and CategoriesSB installed. Both worked fine and I had created a couple of categories (apps and games), which all works fine.
But the categories icon itself has disappeared, which means I can’t add to or remove icons from the folders. I’ve tried removing and re-installing, which hasn’t helped.
Any suggestions?
January 9th, 2010 at 10:36 pm
Somehow I have V2.22 installed, with one folder that I created with apps in it. The folder cant be removed.
Is there a way to download this same version so I can reinstall it to remove this folder and update to the newer 2.29
It as if the apps is not installed because I cant add/remove apps, or make new folders either.
Please advise
January 10th, 2010 at 3:26 am
Hi there. I have Categories 2.29 installed and since then, I am unable to get my background of every folder to apper. How do I fix this? I have all the background.png files in the “folders” folder in my theme.
January 14th, 2010 at 1:58 am
Is there a way to backup and restore the Categories settings? (like folders / icons etc.)
January 14th, 2010 at 2:44 pm
I’m having this problem also. I see the folders I created on my springboard and all apps are intact within them. But when I launch Categories none of them show up for me to edit.
January 15th, 2010 at 3:51 am
Is there a place where we can get active replies to our problems? I see tons of questions/issues here and no reply or help. I have posted on diff boards and even PM bigboss and no reply. I loved cat app, worked great, then got update and now acts as if new install, will not see any cats that was made b4 update, no way to remove apps from cats either, basically stuck with what I got.
HELP PLEASE.
Where do we get some replies?

I have a problem with the latest version of Categories, in that I *cannot* DELETE a category I’ve created. It won’t remove it from the SpringBoard, either. I have to manually remove the folder for it, but then I’m left with an entry in Categories that says:
(null) (0)
/Applications/
*where is the name I gave it.
Both of the ones I’m having trouble with have a space in the name; one is called WiFi Apps, the other Text Apps.
How the heck do I get rid of them? There used to be a text file we could edit to remove entries, but that seems to be gone, or at least not in the same location. I’ve tried hitting edit in Categories v2.29 and then deleting the (null) entry, which makes it go away, but as soon as SpringBoard is restarted, they show up in Categories again! :(
January 15th, 2010 at 10:07 am
Ah – sent an email to BigBoss, the automated response gave me the answer on how to fix the issue:
“If you have a bunch of “NULL” folders listed in Categories that you cannot edit or delete, the problem is that you have files in /var/mobile/Library/Preferences that are laggering around and shouldn’t be there. This can be caused by iTunes backups being restored after a fresh restore or something along these lines. For now, the solution to this is to use iFile (or ssh) and find the files in /var/mobile/Library/Preferences and delete them. Be careful to only delete the right ones. Those ones are in format: com.bigboss.categories.* where * is the folder that won’t show up and is NULL. There may be multiple files like this. One per folder. If you delete the wrong ones, then folders that were working fine will be deleted, but still be on your springboard, but empty. If you are not sure what to do, I suggest doing nothing. You can ignore the NULLs, they do not really harm anything.”
I’m still not happy that CategoriesSB removed the option to change the text color, though. :(
HOWEVER, it looks like you can still do this manually, since inside the .plist file in the /var/mobile/Library/Preferences folder for the Categories folder, there IS an entry that says:
iconFontColor
1
I assume “1″ is white, the default; changing it to a different number should, in theory, change the font color. Cumbersome, if it works, but a solution that will work for now, hopefully.

Sorry for 3 posts in a row. Appears my last one is a big NEGATIVE. New Categories folders (with the name of Category00x, where x is a sequential #), do not have this key. Changing said key in the other ones do not change the text color. :( Still testing, however, perhaps I’ll stumble on a solution. :\

Great app!!!! Thank you so much!!!
Is any way to transform web clips into app so that categories can “read” them?
Thank you again!!
January 16th, 2010 at 9:10 pm
My story, I should never have upgraded from Categories 2.22 to this new 2.29 version. I have had nothing but dramas. I have done every thing mentioned in this blog & others & then some. The new 2.29 version will not show more than 1 folder on the desktop of my iphone. I have created a total number of 4 with no naming conflicts with other programs etc all have unique names. The new folders have all been created OK i.e.: /Applications/Category000.app & so on. By the way this is the only one that is visible the rest as in /Applications/Category001.app onwards are not visible. I have removed all reference of the previous versions folders on the desktop & within the /Applications/ directory. I have uninstalled & reinstalled all boss apps including categories etc & reinstalled them time & time again but with no luck. I also removed all reference to any left over boss entries in the /var/mobile/Library/Preferences/.
Can Categories 2.22 version be added to cydia downloads for those of us with drama’s with the new 2.29 version? The 2.22 version worked perfectly for me on my iphone which by the way has got firmware version 2.2(5G77). Everything worked great for me up to now & I’m happy with current firmware. Sorry for the Mills & Boon story, any help to solve this would be appreciated as it is very frustrating to say the least. Cheers, Regards Rob K.

Me too. Categories is a great, great app. Being able to add Safari favorites saved on the home screen to categories folders would make it perfect. Hope you find a way to add it! Thanks again.

See post 39 above — but I agree, this would be a great feature to add, if possible.

Same problem as Josh. I upgraded my 2G phone to 3.1.3 from 3.0.1 and reloaded Cydia apps with AptBackup. I placed all my apps in the their categories folders. Everytime I start Categories I get “…Damaged/partial folders…>Repair”. This gives me a null folder of “/Applications/plist.app” I do not see /Applications/plist.app to delete. I SSH to the iPhone and tried ls -a and ls -A.
rm /Applications/plist.app does not find it. I have Categories.app and Category000-005.app for my 6 folders.
