The Dev Team has posted its official Jailbreak for iPhone OS 2.2. Details from the dev team here. The current quickpwn and pwnage tutorials will work. Note that if you’re on Windows, your only option is quickpwn. Read Rule #1 below!
Some release notes on it:
- GOLDEN RULE: If you have a 3G iPhone and want potential soft unlock in the near future do NOT use QuickPwn, and do not use the official ipsw or the iTunes update process without using PwnageTool.
- Read item 1 again and again.
- At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the latest versions of PwnageTool and QuickPwn.
- These are suitable for the recent 2.2 release.
- Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
- The ‘late 2008’ MacBook/air/pro line of computers have an issue with DFU mode, it is possible to go from Pwned 2.1 -> 2.2 but going from stock to Pwned does not work, if in any doubt use a different machine.
- Choosing the correct tool is crucial. Be warned!
Thanks to Omercnet & Dr Taru, here are some non-torrent links:

So its ok to update itunes to 8.0.2?
November 22nd, 2008 at 5:10 pm
Hey BB.
I remember with 2.1 that having 5 icon dock messed with things when it tried to restore your backup..
So do we know if thats going to happen again? should it be removed before restoring?
Is Aptbackup still a good way to get everything back?
November 22nd, 2008 at 5:17 pm
Its the same story again – follow the same steps.
November 22nd, 2008 at 5:29 pm
Hello BB.
I know you have mentioned this hundreds of times, but do you think you can post notes or either a link with the steps that should be taken before upgrading to 2.2 and then jailbreaking.
I think some of them are: bacup with aptbackup, delete all categories folders, unpoof icons etc.
I just think that having a list will help everyboby.
Thanks in advance
November 22nd, 2008 at 5:32 pm
Thanks for the quick reply…
So do you advise following all these steps (pasted below) from your guide ands using quickpwn, or making a custom restore with pwnagetool then the steps 6 and on? – trying to make it less time consuming than the 2.1 upgrade :-) hahaha
Steps from your guide +++++++++++++++++++++
Step 3) Restore your firmware. If you are upgrading to the latest version of firmware you can just let it download and restore. To do this, click “restore” and wait. If you would rather download the firmware manually, you can get all firmwares here.
Step 4) At this point, if you are a contract subscriber (AT&T or such) you need to activate your device in iTunes. Just hook it up and wait, it should auto activate allowing you to slide to unlock to icons. If you are unlocking, you probably see “slide for emergency” only. Do not do anything else in iTunes at this point. Disconnect your device from your computer. Do not restore your backup, do not set up as a new phone, just remove the device.
Step 5) Do not restore your backup in iTunes yet. Instead, jailbreak your device now. I suggest using quickpwn. You can follow my guide here.
Step 6) Using Cydia, install aptbackup. This is the most important part, do not skip any of it. The rest of this step will allow you to correct any problems you encounter in the next steps.
a) Install open SSH.
b) If you had 5 icon dock installed before the upgrade, install that now also.
c) Install BossPrefs
Step 7) Restore your backup from iTunes. Just hook back up to the computer and when asked, restore as a backup from whichever iPhone you had.
Step 8) iTunes will restore your settings, contacts, notes, pictures, and all your apps. Now to restore the rest of your Cydia installs. Open aptbackup and hit restore. It should reinstall all your packages from Cydia. If aptbackup is now hidden (missing icon) after your iTunes restore, load BossPrefs, go to hidden icons, and unhide it. You can also unhide any other hidden icons here.

Dear BigBoss
I know that you might be against this, but if you can, can you please put up a MobileInstallation patch for 2.2
November 22nd, 2008 at 5:44 pm

November 22nd, 2008 at 5:48 pm
Take a look at my homepage. In there is a middle box and one of them is “upgrade guide”. I think that’s what you’re looking for.

yay!!! im jailbroken! 2.2 and i still got my o2 network. now i will die a happy man!
maybe i misterstood the process.
November 22nd, 2008 at 6:01 pm
So I just want ot make sure I’m reading this correctly. If I want to unlock my 3g at some point in the near future, and b/c I’m on a windows machine, I shouldn’t use this jailbreak yet b/c I can’t use pwnage? I’m on AT&T and have another 1 year + on my contract, so I wouldn’t unlock, to go to a different service provider.
Thanks,
Joe
November 22nd, 2008 at 6:18 pm
@ Plotkin,
are you the one who updated 2.2 in itunes? cos if you are then you baseband already been updated, then you might as well use quickpwn 2.2
AT&T would not be locked on 2.2 jailbroken.
also you can do a custom update, once people start uploading thier own custom firmware, thats been pwnaged on a mac. then you can download and choose that file in quickpwn on windows.
if im wrong about anything in this post, please please please correct me!!! im only saying whay i read in other forums
November 22nd, 2008 at 6:18 pm
Most likely not. Those that misunderstand the process usually do not experience success :)
November 22nd, 2008 at 6:19 pm
In USA, what other 3g provider is there anyway? If you aren’t planning to unlock in the near future, I would not worry about it.
But your analysis is correct. If you want to unlock in the future, it is advisable that you do not use these methods on windows, or update at all in iTunes.
November 22nd, 2008 at 7:31 pm
Got it going!
iPhone 2g (1st gen)
Used Pwnagetool to make a custom 2.2.
– Used Expert mode, Failed a couple times but finally worked when i changed some options
– Unchecked activate – since i use AT&T
– Changed the partition to 1047MB (first mark on the line)
– Unchecked Nooter – im on at&t, don’t need unlock.
– Set my custom logo.
Was unable to restore with the phone in DFU – kept getting error 1600. I’m using a 20in iMac with OSX 10.5.5 and itunes 8.0.1 (12)
So I left the iphone connected and turned on like normal, option-Restore to select the custom firmware. (is that status bar on the iphone during restore new? I don’t remember it in the past)
It restored just fine, No errors, has my custom logo and all.
Activation was successful.
Cydia works fine. (have not tried installer as I don’t use it much)
Used Cydia to install a few apps before I restore my old data- 5 icon dock, SSH, Aptbackup, sbsettings.
Then restored my most recent backup.
Looked like everything came back except the stuff i had installed from cydia.
Tried to use aptbackup to restore those , but it tells me that I never had done an aptbackup – It lies, I used aptbackup just before my last sync/backup.. so not sure what’s up with that but i can reinstall what i want from cydia manually.
WooT for JB 2.2 :-)
November 22nd, 2008 at 7:35 pm
After upgrading to 2.2 my swirlyMMS now crashes upon loading. It will stay open for about 3sec and then crashes. I tried reinstalling swirly in case it didnt load correct the first time but it didnt fix it. I did a full restore and then used windows quickpwn in order to upgrade. Everything else seems fine. Is anyone else having problems with swirlymms?
November 22nd, 2008 at 8:50 pm
I want to unlock in the future, it is advisable that I do not use these methods on windows, or update at all in iTunes. But if i already used Quickpwn/windows for jailbreak 3g 2.1 before, does it still give me the chance to unlock in future?
November 22nd, 2008 at 9:08 pm
does anyone know the details about why you can’t use the new MacBooks to go from stock to pwnd? i was curious and tried it with a virgin iPod touch and it definitely doesn’t work
November 22nd, 2008 at 9:12 pm
If swirly uses statusbar icons try installing the package called .. Search for compatibility. This may solve it.
November 22nd, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Apple blocked the dfu driver.
November 22nd, 2008 at 9:29 pm
DONE!!!! ;-)
2.2 JB’d and going strong…
BUT…. Swirly MMS wont work until his updated release filters through….
November 22nd, 2008 at 11:47 pm
One bad 2.2 Firmware Update story.
Not even jailbroken yet. Just did a restore on iPhone 3G 2.1 JB to fresh new 2.2 through iTunes was going to run for a while without JB.
Now my 3G is totally dead. I can make calls, I can use internet with 3G turned off. But using the iPhone with 3G turned on means spinning circles until error network/server stopped responding.
This is seriously f*****d

Just wanted to say a big thanks to BigBoss for all the help and advice. I followed it all to the letter and it worked perfectly. Many thanks once again BigBoss. You’re a LEGEND!

Hello,
Before updating from 2.1 to 2.2 I followed your advices to backup apps. BUT AppBackup doesn’t back up CydiaApps, only “officials one” from Apple Store. How could I restore the apps I paid for (SwirlyMMS and PdaNet) ?
Many thanks for your help

@ bigboss
Please man I need your help
I have an iphone 3g unlocked by gevey sim (Sim adapter) .. and I have windows.
Can you make a custom 2.2 firmware which preserves ( not upgrading) the baseband and upload it for me and my friends? because I cannot trust anyone and If i upgraded by incorrect 2.2 firmware I will lose the chance to unlock my 3g
November 23rd, 2008 at 8:13 am
I screwed up…I updated my downlaoded and installed the update in iTunes last night and thought I would be re-jailbreaking this morning..I can’t get it to go into DFU mode. Then I read here that Apple blocked the DFU driver? Is that true? Can anything be done?
November 23rd, 2008 at 8:34 am
does pdanet work with firmware 2.2 jailbroken.
November 23rd, 2008 at 12:01 pm
I am not able to get the bootloader 3.9 to load correctly. I downloaded it multiply times and still have not got it to recognize the file. I am using a Macbook Pro (2 years old). I browse to the file and it does not open the file. It says “that file doesn’t appear to be the proper file”
I have been trying since last night to get the proper file.
BTW thanks for all the hard work on jailbraking the iphone. I have used jailbroke for several version before the 2.0 and would hate to go back to a “normal” unjailbroke phone.
November 23rd, 2008 at 12:01 pm
Quick questions. I’m currently using a 3G 16 GB on the JB. I want to jaibreak up to 2.2, and I’m on Windows, so I’m using quickpwn. My questions:
1. After I do AptBackup and appbackup on my iphone, then I load itunes on my machine, do I upgrade to 8.02, or stay in current itunes (8)?
2. Do I load the new 2.2 firmware (since has new baseband) from Apple, or is this where I’d do the Control + Restore, and do the firmware downloaded from here.?
3. I’ve also removed all apps from categories folders and un-poofed all icons. Now I just want to start my jailbreak.
Thanks,
Plot

use APTbackup, which is found in Cydia.

November 23rd, 2008 at 3:46 pm
Hey BB,
If I used Quickpwn to intially jail break my iphone to version 2.1, have I already destroyed my soft unlock possibilities?
November 23rd, 2008 at 5:15 pm
I had Cydia (and some other apps) put into the dock of my SBSettings when I backed up my phone before restoring to the new firmware and jailbreaking. After I restored from my backup the Cydia icon disappears so I can’t install AptBackup to get everything how it was. I found Cydia in my Applications folder using iPhone Browser, but still can’t figure out how to get the icon back. Any suggestions?
November 23rd, 2008 at 11:07 pm
use a different computer to pwn
November 23rd, 2008 at 11:14 pm
After several more tries, I finally got it to DFU mode..Got everything back the way it was before…
November 24th, 2008 at 2:23 am
I plan to unlock my sim-locked 3G in the near future. I am using Windows. Therefore, I should not upgrade to 2.2 at this time using PC since the baseband will also be upgraded.
Can any Mac user be kind enough to create a custom ipsw file, Cydia and Installer loaded, no custom boot image and no baseband upgrade? I think I can use this to upgrade my 3G 2.1 to 2.2 using this ipsw without changing the baseband.
November 24th, 2008 at 2:31 am
BigBoss, first of all, thank you for your help.
My case: 3G waiting to be unlocked, updated without problems (and maintaining 2.1 baseband).
However, mail app crashes once open and maps cannot localize mi iphone.
Any suggestion?
Thanks again. Gracias.
November 24th, 2008 at 5:11 am
I sent a mail yesterday to pdanet. I m still waiting their answer.
November 24th, 2008 at 9:51 am
The problem was that my iphone was a 1st generation phone (2G). I found 2.2.1 version of quickpawn and it worked fine. Thanks again to all the hardwork of this site and the jailbrake team.
November 25th, 2008 at 12:22 am
Hi BB,
After upgrading to 2.2, had problems with hidden apps etc, got that sorted out, but aptbackup was still not working, so I started over again following the steps in your guide, but aptbackup is still not working. I can see the aptbackup txt file in var/mobile/Library/preferences, and it does list all my aps, but when I try to run aptbackup, it says I need to do a backup first, so it seems to not be finding the txt file in preferences. Any suggestions?
November 25th, 2008 at 6:09 am
Hi BB:
I never had a problem jailbreaking or using aptbackup. I succefully jailbroke the phone then I used aptbackup to restore all the apps. It partially worked and when I run Cydia – the screen gets stuck on “Repairing” – do I have to run quickpwn again to start over?
Thanks!
November 25th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
Hi all,
I update and tried to jailbreak my 3g phone but it’s not working. Maybe I read wrong and I should not have tried. My phone is working but it just can’t jailbreak. Now I have to use a plain iPhone and that’s driving me crazy.
November 25th, 2008 at 8:31 pm
Happy to report that I used another computer and all went well. Thanks BB and all the people that post with their help.
November 25th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
I use T-Mobile on my 3G iPhone. I’ve been using the maligned piggyback-sim w/o too much problem. Can’t wait for the 3G soft unlock b/c T-Mobile has 3G in Boston (where I live).
November 25th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
i wont let me Jail break the phone it just say Firmware error string.. whats that mean??
November 25th, 2008 at 10:28 pm
Is anyone having no luck in downloading stuff in Cydia using wireless? I cannot download anything at all. The only way to download is through the 3G network. What’s wrong here?
November 26th, 2008 at 5:15 am
Hi bb
My iphone run perfectly with 2.2;-)
I wanted you always say: you are the best :-)
regards from germany :x
November 26th, 2008 at 6:29 am
much much thanks to you all, yeah u are the best>
I did my upgrade to 2.2 yesterday but BB, the cydia apps do not come back, so between time I had to reinstall goodies from cydia. Also now in cydia when I have to bring up the keyboard in search, the keyboard clicks are there, lol only when I’m in cydia???
in settings they are off? No emoticons in 2.2, but you can install them in cydia, thank you to ispazio.
To upgrade I dwnloaded Quickpwn22,, for the jb, and the upgrade 2.2software, I updated the itunes to 8.02 did my hold down shift key restore, very smooth. With reference to losing space from restoring, does that now mean I will lose the ability to unlock my 3G iphone in the near future?
once again much thanks, from canada :-)
November 27th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
i just jailbreak my 2.2 3g iphone and everything work just like before thank you for the step
November 27th, 2008 at 7:20 pm
Anyone here who updated to 2.2 on iPhone 3G, then jailbroke it (naturally, installing Cydia & Installer), and, with fingers crossed, anticipated your iPhone to restart successfully, only later to find that Cydia–the actual Cydia app–is not anywhere to be found on your beloved iPhone?
And if I missed it in this long string of responses, would anyone mind telling me if they found a way to get it back?
November 27th, 2008 at 8:21 pm
Alrighty, I think I got my Cydia back. =)
I tried restoring the iPhone 3G through iTunes (using 2.2) and then used QuickPwn 2.2 (with Cydia & Installer options of course) at least twice (both times, though, Cydia still wasn’t even showing on the phone, which made me think, “TRY, TRY AGAIN!!”) before my iPhone finally figured out that I REALLY wanted Cydia back. Apparently 3rd time’s a charm. =)
Just be adamant about restoring then pwning the iPhone. Hope this helps anyone else who loves Cydia as much as I do.
Big Boss, if I hadn’t met my husband before I met you, I would have told you that I wanted to have your babies (if you’re a guy, anyway).
But since I’m married, I can just say, with great sincerity, Thank You.

Hi guys,
Just upgraded 3G iphone from 2.1 to 2.2.
Everything went fine till I tried to restore my data back from itunes. After I sycned choosing the option to restore from my last back up, all my old Appstore apps and settings were restored, but the phone was no longer jailbroken as BOTH cydia and installer icons were no longer on the iphone!
I have re-jailbroken again and I am back on the itunes screen asking me to restore.
How do I do this (restore old data) without losing my jailbreak again?
November 30th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
Hi guys, I noticed that SSH is on after restarting the phone. Is it possible to add the no ssh on restart switch like in Bossprefs in SBSettings or is there any workarround with current version of SBSettings.
Thanks.

Hi,
When following the guide for the QuickPwn app, I have a problem at Step 5 when trying to enter DFU mode. After going thru the motions of the pressing and releasing the home and power buttons, the iTunes window pops up and gives me error code 2001 with a description saying “this is an unknown iPhone”. The QuickPwn application then gets hung up at the Step 5 window “QuickPwn is about to run on your iPhone.” I’ve let it sit for about 15 mins at this window but there is no movement in the process bar. Please let me know what I’m doing wrong, thanks

Hi
I tried to restore my 2.1 (1st gen iphone) to 2.2 like what I did for 2.1 , the restore process is stuck in “Restoring iPhone software…” I tried to do this again but itunes gave me error 5 until I put my iphone into DFU mode and tried again but again it’s stuck in “Restoring iPhone software..”
any idea?
December 6th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Very quick verification question
Windows user, 3G 16gig iphone, 2.1 firmware, broken using QuickPWN.
I should just sit on my ass and be patient until the 2.2 bugs are worked out before even THINK about upgrading to 2.2 and jailbreaking because a stable jailbreak for 2.2 windows users has not been created.
Correct?
Thank you.
Hal

Have you received a reply or found any information?
I’m in the same boat and am hoping someone comes up with a way for us Windows users to upgrade to 2.2 without changing/upgrading the baseband (in order to protect the opportunity to unlock one day)? Either a pwnage tool for Windows, or a Quickpwn option that would avoid the change to the baseband?
I understand that a CUSTOM ipsw file must be created with the pwnage tool to avoid the change to the baseband, but surely this “custom ipsw” file would be the same for the majority or all of us Windows users with a 3G phone, and the custom ipsw could be incorporated into a revised Quickqwn to allow us to upgrade, couldn’t it?
December 13th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
Plotkin, in comment number 8, may have been in the same situation as a Windows user with a 3G iPhone. He was able to successfully upgrade to FW 2.2 and jailbreak (per his comment, # 41, under the “Site Updates for 2.2 post), but I’m not sure whether he was able to do so while maintaining the old baseband, or if he just went ahead and let the baseband update also. I am hoping he replies on either this or the other post, particularly if someone sent him a custom ipsw file for FW 2.2 (which is what I need).

I am really stumped!
I have a first gen phone unlocked usin t-mobile with 2.0 firm.
i downloaded pwanage 2.2.1 to update but no matter what pwanage does NOT recognize the bootloader files. i have copied the program to the desktop but it in its own folder with all the files .. everything it just does not recognize it.. any help figuring out why this is happening or an alternative to get to 2.2 firm would be appreciate.

Dear BB,
I have an iphone 2g with 2.2.
I am currently in Europe and want to unlock my iphone so i can use it here. I’ve done the steps
Restore to clean version of 2.2

I keep getting “firmware error string”
what’s up with that
I have the quickpwn 2.2 and the right firmware through itunes, but it’s still not working. it worked fine yesterday but i was stupid and hit the wrong button and ended up un-breaking the phone.

Did you ever fix this? How?
