Saurik solves the 3.1 downgrade problem for iPhone 3gs users, “the Chosen” few that saved their ECID SHSH.
If you were one of the 50,000 folks that let Cydia store your information for you, you can now downgrade your 3.1 3gs to 3.0 or restore your 3.0 3gs to 3.0 – or downgrade your 3.0.1 3gs to 3.0. Why is this important?
Lets say you are happily on 3.0 jailbroken and you do something to mess things up and need a restore? As I wrote previously, Apple is no longer allowing restore to 3.0. Well, now if you were one of the folks that had cydia store your ECID SHSH information, you can restore and jailbreak.
Saurik writes a great article explaining how to downgrade or restore your 3.0. He also goes into a very interesting discussion (that I totally agree with) about how Apple is mistreating us as a community. It’s a must-read in my opinion even if you don’t have a 3gs. If you do have a 3gs, you want to read this to understand how you can be able to jailbreak forever at least your 3.0 version.
The downgrade steps are at the bottom of his post. I won’t go into too much detail here, but in short here are the steps. (These only make sense after you read his post, which I encourage you to do).
3.0 to 3.0 restore: Add the hosts entry, restore in itunes, jailbreak, you’re done
3.1 to 3.0 or 3.0.1 to 3.0: To downgrade to 3.0, restore in itunes, get error, restore in itunes, get error, use irecovery to boot device, jailbreak.
One last time, read his post for details. Out of well-deserved respect for Saurik, I am not copying the data here.
If you were not one of the few that saved your ECID in Cydia, dont feel too bad. It sounds like there is an exploit for 3.1 and you will be able to save your 3.1 ECID. Just make sure you do it as soon as it is available to do so.

YES!!!! am one those fortunate folks that let Cydia store my info. However, am happy with 3.0.1 3gs. My tethering and MMS with AT&T works perfectly…I just have to wait for dev team to release the latest pwnage tool for the 3.1…anyhow, just in case i mess up my 3gs, at least i feel comfortable of getting it back to 3.0 though i dont intent to make any stupid acts…:)

^^. I 2nd that.

Although I don’t own a 3GS, I’m commenting here because of one statement:
“Out of well-deserved respect for Saurik, I am not copying the data here.”
BigBoss, I’d just like to point out the amount of immense respect I have for both you and Saurik, specifically. The volumes of work you guys have done in making the iPhone as useful as possible is nothing short of incredible, and though most people may not really care who’s behind Cydia and SBSettings and the like, they’re still awfully glad to have them. Honestly speaking, if you guys hadn’t done everything you have, there wouldn’t be much point to jailbreaking an iPhone (unless one wants to unlock, of course).
Basically, I’d just like to say thanks – To you and to Saurik and the entire Dev Team as well. Apple’s shiny toy wouldn’t really have attracted me a tenth as much as it does if you guys hadn’t put the polish on it. :)

How is your mms on AT&T working? Stock? Or u added the files?
September 15th, 2009 at 3:03 am
Yes, how? I updated my IPCC file and have the camera icon for MMS, but doesn’t work.
September 15th, 2009 at 4:15 am
For you guys have have successfully downgraded from 3.1:
Does tethering work again? My question is whether 3.1 breaking tethering was tied to the baseband change or the firmware change.
Anyone know for absolute certain?

This is great news and I intend to follow Sauriks directions. Just one question. Does changing the host file change anything else in iTunes? In other words, does Genius still work and/or is Saurik now collecting info on my apps, songs, playlists, etc? I have alot of respect for him but want to know what, if anything he can see if I change my host file to point to his server
September 15th, 2009 at 4:57 am
Hi Guys,
Quick question, I have a 3GS but never jailbreak it. I updated to 3.1, is there any hope for me to jailbreak?
September 15th, 2009 at 5:01 am
As a new user of an Iphone (3GS) i want to show all my respect for this comunity.
Best taughts for the job you do helping us to use our Iphones.
I’ve read saurik’s instructions and please help me :
1. how should I know if Cydia stored my information?
2 how could I open the “hosts” file?
thank you guys

there will always be hope..
but nobody can tell when it is gonna reality..
as of now it is just hope…

Great article that Saurik wrote, I just have one question that I’m still confused about… I understand that to future proof restores and jail breaks on the iPhone 3GS, it is recomended to change the iTunes server to cydia instead of the apple server.
I don’t have a 3GS, I own a iPhone 3G running 3.0 jailbreak. Does that process in future proofing jailbreaks also count to us regular 3G users or do we just keep doing it like we have done in the past? Just jailbreak normally when new tools are available for firmware 3.1?
Thanks in advance, and to everyone in the iPhone community/scene, thanks so much for making the iPhone what it it today
September 15th, 2009 at 9:46 am
This process is ONLY for the 3GS which has an ECID chip.
September 15th, 2009 at 10:45 am
Woot! I saved that ECID SHSH information the instant it was an option :)
I probably won’t be upgreadinv to 3.1 yet, but I love that there is a safty net now. Ty and keep up the great work guys!

1# you will know if Cydia has stored your files in
cydia.. Just check the main page at the top and if you find a note saying this iPhone 3G[s] has an ECID on file then you are in..
2# open with notepad ( just open c>windows>system32…… as saurik said..
If you want to read more go to modmyi as saurik says..

Im about to buy a 3gs with 3.1 already on it. Is there anyway to downgrade it to 3.0 OTB
September 15th, 2009 at 11:28 am
1. I would just try it. I think if it comes back with a 3000 error cydia didn’t save ur info.
2. Notepad I believe but if ur on a mac I’m not sure.

Not withstanding the great work done by Saurik and others it seems to me a secondary approach might be worth discussing.
I come to iphone from a long history with “palm”. One of the best things about the palm was the ability to restore to a known state (no matter what the condition) your phone. There was a large range of software that both ran on the palm itself or a desktop that allowed you to restore your device to as it was when you backed it up.
It would seem to me this would completely cut apple out of the loop and would reduce the war of esclation between apple and Saurik the like.
I for one have never really been that interested in the so called new features of many of the firmware upgrades.
I would pay a lot of a peice of software that with one tap backed up (took an image)everything on the iphone. Then after placing the device is some mode hitting “go” restored it fully to the backup condition. No itunes, no apple. Just a simple and dirty full backup and restore. We do this with our PC’s without the intervention of Microsoft. Yes you would loose everything you did since the last backup but you could then use iTunes to sync the missing stuff.
Surely everything that is needed to run my iphone in on it. I dont fully understand the need to check and sign with apple

Hi, i have an iphone 3GS and i had it jailbroken to 3.0.1 and the ultrasn0w source wouldnt add so i jailbroke it again and it messed up my phone and it wont turn on now. It is stuck on the apple screen on 3.0.1 firmware … I have to restore but i cant … i currently have not done anything to my iphone 3gs … i need to restore it to fix it so it will turn on but if i do then i cant jailbreak or unlock and im a tmobile user. SO i need to use the jailbreak and unlock features … PLEASE HELP! I AM VERY CONFUSED AND NEED ADVICE… any tips on how to fix it to turn on without upgrading/restoring… or do i need to wait on the 3.1 jailbreak and unlock … because if i use sauriks on file server i wont be able to unlock because when i upgrade through itunes my baseband will upgrade… PLEASE GIVE ME SOME ADVICE OR TIPS! THANKS SOO MUCH!

@baller786,
I had the same problem, installed a program om cydia and my phone was dead. Now I’m running 3.1 and cannot use the phone, only use it like a expensive iPod touch.
We have no choice but wait for devteam (aka god).
September 15th, 2009 at 6:40 pm
His server is not collecting your data. You send him your data in cydia when you told it to save your ecid. The change in hosts is so you can use that data nothing else.
September 15th, 2009 at 6:41 pm
No
September 15th, 2009 at 6:44 pm
This is why you install openSSH first thing. Even in this state, with SSH you could make repairs and fix things without a restore.
September 16th, 2009 at 4:37 am
How do I store my stuff with Cydia?
September 16th, 2009 at 8:49 am
That’s actually a very interesting idea, Chris. Now that you’ve mentioned it, I’d also never thought of simply doing a full os backup and then using it as an image for a future backup request. Perhaps a developer can try it out.

Hi I need help with my iTunes I don’t know why every time I close iTunes every music, video,& aplication it gone. & I have to do the proces again. Please anywant tell me how I fix thits
thank you
September 16th, 2009 at 5:15 pm
When you open Cydia and the home screen loads, a message will be at the top that says “This iPhone 3G[S] has an ECID SHSH on file.”
September 16th, 2009 at 5:19 pm
I saved my ECID SHSH file on Cydia when I had the chance, but in saurik’s article he says that the window will be open again to save the file for 3.1 firmware. Do I (and other people with the file saved for 3.0.1) need to restore to 3.1 and save the ECID SHSH file again so that I’ll be safe for other future firmware releases?
September 16th, 2009 at 9:34 pm
If saurik has your ECID then he can automatically get a signature for your phone on the currant firmware..
I guess what he meant was for those who he never had the chance to get their ECID in the past .. He will get them now so they can restore to 3.1 if a jailbreak/ unlock is to be found in future (preparing for the future)

hi, I have a 3gs OS 3.1, please how to downgrade to 3.0 … plZ but the error occurred 3002, can someone help me how to do..HPM
September 17th, 2009 at 5:04 am
Thank you mastuul.
But still few questions:
1. Waiting for new jb&unlock for my 3GS 3.1, I bought another Iphone. I can not find the ECID SHSH message on Cydia.
2.If I open the “HOSTS” with notepad, I save as .TXT or what
All the best
September 17th, 2009 at 2:53 pm
saurik has said that the window was closed to save any more files for the 3.0 firmware. Apparently (I’m not 100% sure) another window will open once the 3.1 firmware is jailbroken.
When I changed the file I saved it (in Notepad) and reopened the file to ensure that the changes were actually still there. It took two tries, but after the second time the altered file was there.
September 17th, 2009 at 3:53 pm
how do you have MMS on the 3gS?
my girlfriend tried to send me pics, but i never even got a notification about them.
September 19th, 2009 at 9:38 pm
Hey,
Kindly help me out I’ve upgraded my iPhone 3GS to 3.1 from iTunes which i had no idea of what i was doing at that time. Now is there any chance that i could retrieve my iPhone as in Sim Carrier and jailbreak ?? please if yes, then reply me back. I’ll be highly Grateful. :) Cheers
September 22nd, 2009 at 5:11 pm
No…Unless you have saved your ECID file on cydia for 3.0 in the past.
September 22nd, 2009 at 9:48 pm
I totally agree with you. I also come to iPhone from a long history of Sony Ericsson P-series and it is just the same with “your palm” ideas. I believe that Saurik, Bigboss and others can do it technically, but why not, I guess it relates to legal matters . Apple itself surely can do it, but I think apple will do it gradually until it make a lot, a lot, a lot of money. Making money is also one of the best things of apple’s.
September 22nd, 2009 at 10:59 pm
Ok, so I got the phone with 3.0.1. Obviously won’t be going to 3.1. Can/should I update with Cydia? Don’t really understand if I previously needed 3.0 to be able to do this Cydia “backup”…
thx
September 23rd, 2009 at 12:05 am
I still have 3.0.1 on my phone and iTunes 9…I DL 3.0.1_7A400.ipsw and use redsn0w and it still doesnt recognize it…
Any thoughts?
September 23rd, 2009 at 12:12 am
nvm i got it…
September 23rd, 2009 at 5:14 am
I never saved my ECID to Cydia, but I have the numbers on a wordfile saved on my computer.
Any way I can downgrade with this information?
September 24th, 2009 at 3:43 pm
Nope..

yes:

September 26th, 2009 at 11:09 am
I can downgrade to 3.0 as I have the files with saurik. When I downgrade i do not get any signal through at&t also when I try and do a restore from back up it says I cannot because the backup is for a newer version of the OS. Any way of getting around this as I need the certs that are on my phone to be restored for RDF and email

For T-mobile you must set up the Network Settings for MMS as follows:
Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network
MMS
——
APN: wap.voicestream.com
username: (blank)
password: (blank)
MMSC: 216.155.174.84/servlets/mms
MMS Proxy: 216.155.165.50:8080
MMS Max Message Size: (blank)
MMS UA Prof URL: (blank)
After a reboot you should get the camera icon in the SMS window.
With ATT I’m not sure..
