Pwnage v3.1 for iPhone 2g / 3g and first generation ipod touch for osx is out. I updated my pwnage guide for this release. 3gs/ipod 2g still require RedSnow which is not out yet. Before you rush out and upgrade, I still recommend staying on any 3.0 firmware you are on for as long as possible. The 3.1 firmware is not worth the hassles of upgrading. But if you have one of the two devices above, you can upgrade if you want now.
From dev team blog:
- GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should only upgrade to 3.1 with a PwnageTool created .ipsw. – Stay away from Apple’s direct updates as described here and here please get up to speed on the whole subject by reading the information contained in these posts.
- If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.1 unlock works with this PwnageTool release. iPhone 3G users upgrading to 3.1 will need to continue using ultrasn0w with a PwnageTool created 3.1 .ipsw
- Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
- Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
- At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the 3.1 capable version of PwnageTool.
- This app is suitable for the recent 3.1 release.
- This version of PwnageTool will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.
- PwnageTool WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch (1st Generation) and the iPhone 3G.

Hi, i have an iphone 3GS and i had it jailbroken to 3.0.1 and the ultrasn0w source wouldnt add so i jailbroke it again and it messed up my phone and it wont turn on now. It is stuck on the apple screen on 3.0.1 firmware … I have to restore but i cant … i currently have not done anything to my iphone 3gs … i need to restore it to fix it so it will turn on but if i do then i cant jailbreak or unlock and im a tmobile user. SO i need to use the jailbreak and unlock features … PLEASE HELP! You definitely have a good understanding of the problem. If you did not already enter your ECID data into Cydia a few days ago, there is currently nothing you can do. Your choices are:
1) Restore to 3.1 and never be able to unlock again
2) Leave it unusable and hope a tool gets written to solve your situation.
3) Try to debug and fix the problem without a restore. Did you have ssh installed and know how to use it?

If you restore with 3.1, the device will upgrade to a newer baseband that is not unlockable at this time, and may never be unlockable.
“Never be able to unlock” is exactly as it sounds – it may never be able to be unlocked, unless there was a way found to unlock the new baseband, or downgrade the baseband.

Anyone know: if you cached your ECID with Saurik, can you point your verification server (through hosts file) at Saurik’s server and then do a 3.1 restore with a custom IPSW on a 3Gs, or is it because you can’t create the custom 3Gs IPSW that it won’t work.

They removed 50% of the command set from the baseband, all the commands that were exploited are gone. Its likely never to be unlocked again. Using pwnage you could update to 3.1 without the baseband getting updated – if such a thing exists sometime soon for a 3gs.

I set it up my phone as new after jailbreak it, and installed the program one by one, as soon as I installed the winterboard, reboot the phone, it goes into safe mode. So I assume this is the winterboard issue?

I upgraded to the 3.1 os before I knew that it would cause a problem with the carrier unlock. (I’ve only had the phone for about a week and now I can’t use it) Can you please tell me if a baseband downgrader will be available for the 5.11.07 baseband?

You are in a very bad situation…
The baseband can never be downgraded, so a “baseband downgrader” is impossible to create.
It seems very unlikely that an unlock will ever be created for the 5.11.07 baseband, and if it ever is created it could take weeks, months or even years to happen.
Do not bother trying any of the jailbreaking/firmware downgrading methods available as none of these can affect your baseband which will remain locked.
I’m sorry to tell you that for now your iphone locked and unusable on any network except the one it was purchased for (AT&T in the US, others in the rest of the world). If you are not from the US it may be possible to pay the phone company you purchased it from to officially unlock your iphone, contact the people you purchased it from to see if this is possible.

No offense, but obviously you have not read much about this whole thing about baseband… you should google it, do some research on your own. it would be a good learning stuff for you if you are really interested in getting to know the detail of iphone unlock/jailbreak. :-) But the short answer to your original question is, “no, you won’t be able to downgrade your baseband nor unlock it, perhaps forever.”

I have been reading about it for days now!!! And what I do not understand is if someone came up with a way to downgrade PREVIOUS VERSIONS of the baseband firmware why are you saying that it’s impossible??? I understand that a baseband unlock is currently unavailable but does that really mean that it will be unavailable forever? And if so why this baseband FW? How is this one so different from the previous versions? That previous versions were unlocked and this current one will never be!!!

I have been told by fuzzy team that a new version of fuzzyband downgrader will be published very soon in cydia and I think it will support the 5.11.07 baseband. I’m stuck in the same problem. Fuzzyband is our hero , thank god they are there to fight apple.

baseband downgrader, if is ever updated, it will work on only few phones(limited number) which were made at a specific period of time(iphone 3G made before september 2008 (not all of them even)thats is because of the bootloader 5.8 they have and which apple stopped making since..
if you are lucky to have one of those, then you might be able to downgrade if an update comes out.

ISSUES USING SBSETTINGS WITH 3.1 IPHONE 3G:
iPhone was succesfully restores with custom firmware.
I installed OpenSSH, SBSettings and AppSync 3.1.
I tried using SBSettings to reboot/poweroff the device and noticed it was no longer working. It actually removed all my icons from the SpringBoard too.
I now cannot open Cydia to uninstall it, as it keeps on crashes.

It is always recommended to set up as new phone otherwise you might get battery draining problem. Yes, when you setup up as a new phone u will lose all your contacts, emails, pics and etc. To get them back u have to manually add them as u did when u bought the iphone

Dumb question: I want to dump my current phone company when my contract is up in a few months, maybe sooner, and get a 3gs through AT&T. My 3G crashes very often after the Jailbreak with PwnageTool 3.1. Any ideas which program/extention causes this. (Winterboard / SBSettings / Mobile Substrate and diverse Cydia Store Products are installed.
iPhone even crashes during sync with iTunes. Seems that it is loosing connection from time to time, then reconnects 1 to 3 times until it crashes/reboots. Ugly effect and disturbs me a bit.

For iPhone 3G, NOT 3GS!!
I posted this on the Dev Team blog in case it would help others in this specific situation. If you’ve mistakenly updated to official 3.1 (or on purpose to get the baseband update) and run Windows, the following steps can get you jailbroken on 3.1. I CANNOT obviously help with a unlock. I’m on AT&T so frankly I don’t care. If you’re at this point, you’ve more than likely noticed if you try to restore a custom 3.1 IPSW from DFU mode from the official 3.1 (not jailbroken) you get a 1600/n error and cannot continue. Recovery mode does not work either.

I went through this last night. The solution is…annoying. The reason for the 1600 error is that to restore a custom FW on an UN-pwned phone requires PwnageTool to do some ‘magic’ when entering DFU mode. This cannot be done in Windows obviously. In my case, I created the IPSW in a mac virtual machine. But USB doesn’t work so couldn’t do the DFU process. Also, I wanted to update my baseband (I’m on AT&T), which is why I restored the official 3.1 FW first.
**Note that you CAN restore a custom FW from iTunes in Windows if your phone is already jailbroken.
So once you are where you’re at, official 3.1 FW with a custom 3.1 IPSW on Windows, you need to do this:
1) Downgrade back to 3.0 or 3.0.1 using the shift-restore method in iTunes.
2) At the end of the process you’ll get a 1015 (?) error. This is a failure to downgrade the baseband. This is NORMAL. Your phone will likely be stuck in Recovery mode at this point (USB icon on the screen).
3) Google for and download iRecovery from iHackintosh. Follow the directions to get your phone out of Recovery mode. Once rebooted you’ll be back to 3.0 with the new baseband.
4) Use redsn0w to jailbreak 3.0/3.0.1.
5) Now you can upgrade to your custom 3.1 FW from iTunes. DO NOT do this in DFU mode, it is not necessary. Do a normal shift-restore with the custom FW. If that doesn’t work, put your phone in RECOVERY mode, then do the shift-restore. To get into recovery mode, unplug it from your computer, turn it off, then WHILE HOLDING THE HOME BUTTON, plug it back into your computer with iTunes running. Continue holding HOME until you’re in recovery mode.
Done.

I’ve been able to downgrade from 3.1 to 3.0 with redsn0w and windows and jailbreak the iphone BUT when I sync the iphone, it doesn’t bring in the music library or facorite ph#’s. I get something called ApplesyncUIHandler not working. Any suggestions to fix this?

I unfortunately updated to 3.1 and locked myself out of my phone.
I then Jailbroke with Pwnage tool 3.1, so now I can at least get into the phone.
I was expecting my Tmobile not to work but I then inserted an ATT SIM still wont work.

I just updated my to the 3.1 firmware on my jailbroken iPhone 3G. I’m having an issue: whenever I install an app from Cydia, it never actually installs. It goes through the normal install process, but after, the app’s icon doesn’t show up on the screen (and yes, these apps are supposed to have an icon).
Does anyone know why these apps are now installing properly? Anything to do to remedy this situation? Thanks a lot!

FYI: I update my 2G iPhone with Pwnage and FW:3.1. It’s great! I love the itunes genius music mixes, This helps me alot because my iPhone has only 4g of memory space, and it’s difficult to pick and chose songs that already well exceed the memory. Also, Apple has fix the battery drain problem I had under 3.0.

I am simply curious about the following: In the past whenever Apple released an OS upgrade, an updated version of QuickPwn or Redsnow would be released within a few days or so. Obviously it’s taking longer this time (> 1 week). Is this because of the Baseband issue? (3.1 upgrades the baseband too). I am assuming that there are some additional technical challenges this time and was wondering whether the baseband issue is behind it.

I updated my 3g to 3.1, not bothered about carrier unlock, but can I jailbreak this using windows. I tried downgrading to 3.0 but on installing the custom firmware for 3.1 I got error 1015 & 1064 I think. Why I’d this and is there any way round this? Thanks bigboss:)

you need to choose the 3.0 FW for the Redsn0w jailbreak. Reddsnow is unable to consider the 3.01 FW

i upgraded iphone 2g to 3.1 installed appsync plus many apps, when i try to install “sbsettings” it says under modification “remove appsync for 3.1″ cud you tell me what that means!. will it remove appsync? will i lose all my apps?

If I have a 3g iPhone 3.0, will MMS work when the set it up? I heard you have to have 5.0 carrier setting, but my iPhone says I have 4.0. Is there a way to download the carrier update w/out updating the actual software update?

Hi.
Looks like mine is f**ked. I redsn0w-win_0.8 my 3G iPhone 3.0.1 and set it to install Icy and Cydia. It came back on and i tried to load Cydia but it kep on crashing. I tried to redsn0w-win_0.8 again and now when it gets to the end of the ‘pineapple man’ and completes, it looks like it is about to re-boot but when it comes back on it shows the grey/silver apple logo and then it shows the loading animation and it keeps doing that and then vibrating and then doing the same thing over and over again. Please help. What have i done?

Try ususing only cydia or Icy.

I updated my 3g to 3.1, not bothered about carrier unlock, but can I jailbreak this using windows. I tried downgrading to 3.0 but on installing the custom firmware for 3.1 I got error 1015 & 1064 I think. Why I’d this and is there any way round this? Thanks bigboss:) or anyone else thatcan help

I’ve had my iphone 3g from my friend he brought from UK, he is unlocked in India and used here with out any pblm. when i buy from him i accidently updated to 3.1. Then I downgrade it to 3.0, but the Bootloader Version 06.02 and Baseband Version: 05.11.07 cant downgrade, so i can do only jailbrake,

I had same problem -safe Mode, with my JB 3G in both active & non-active IPSW with “Winterboard”. Un-installed of Wboard fix the problem in both cases.

I have a iphone 3g running firmware 3.0 that was jailbroken using redsn0w. I don’t really use cydia or any jailbroken apps that much and was thinking of upgrading to 3.1. My question is if I wanted to upgrade would just going to itunes and clicking upgrade work or would it brick my phone? Would I have to downgrade first or am I ok to just do it the regular way. Once again I do not care about losing jailbreak I just dont want to mess up my phone. Thanks in advance for the help.

I have a 2G iPhone which I jailbroke with Quickpwn. Its still running 2.2.1 (or whatever the last 2 firmware was).
I haven’t upgraded to 3 or 3.1 for 2 reasons.
1. My computer HD crashed and I lost all the music, pics, movies, and apps that I had in iTunes. If I upgraded, I would lose it all.
2. Not sure what to use to upgrade. Can I use Quickpwn? Pwnage seems very complicated…
Help? Advice?

ok i used all of your things to unlock my phone and the other day my son pluged in my phone and upgraded it to 3.1 ( after I have already jailbroke it) so now i have a phone that has the new 3.1 firmware on it and I want it to be jail broke again .. I went through the steps with the new firmware and it just stuck at the “installing to disk screen and no Pinniapple halling ass across the screen logo … What do I do ?

There is a good reason to update to 3.1 after all. There are some apps that do require the updated OS. For example Snapture and Procamera 2.0 do not work on 3.0. It sucks!

i dont know why i was excited to upgrade my 3G without reading anything 1st, anyhow i upgraded my 3G directly from iTunes and now its locked showing iTunes logo with cable.
as i know that if i unlock the 3.1 then i cannt use the phone service because of the baseband have been updated too, but also if i have 5.08 bootloader it may work agian.
any help please with this one, how to unlock the firmware and how to downgrade the baseband !!

The new Pwnage tool 3.1.3 is out for Mac OS on the dev team site. It has been updated to the 3GS if your iPhone was already Pwned. :)

I have a 3G phone that was jailbroke. After great consideration I upgraded to the 3.0.1 or something another, after reading it was okay to upgrade to the 3.0.1 I upgrade. I didn’t notice at the time it was 3.1 after I went to Jailbreak it then realized it was 3.1….Crap!! I found the 3.1 custom firmware and successfully have it jailbroke, have the “NO SERVICE” message and cannot make calls. When I look in Settings. Info is as follows:Modem Firmware 05.11.07, Firmware 3.1 and it also says Carrier: Not Available. how do I resolve this issue of not being able to make phone calls? I have jailbroke it again, with the same result. I don’t really need it unlocked, but just jailbroken.

I got an unlocked iPhone 3G from the US and it was working great here in NEPAL until i updated the OS to v3.1 via itunes – still don’t know why i did it!! Now the Firmware is 5.11.07, Carrier – Carrier 5.0 and it says ‘No service’
Everything looks OK excpet that i can’t make phone calls. Is there any chance of unlocking it or going back to the old version.

restore it again using itunes and don’t check the activate phone on pwnage so that you can activate it in itunes using your official carrier sim

OK guys, cut me some slack here. I’ve been a Windows Smartphone guy for years, and just yesterday made the switch to an iPhone. I have a 3G and before I knew anything about jailbreaking it, iTunes updated the firmware to 3.1. I’ve done nothing else to it yet. I’m running a Windows 7 laptop, and want to jailbreak my phone so I can load a custom University of Florida theme I’ve found. I’ve read several of the guides, and think RedSn0w is what I want to use. It doesn’t look like RedSn0w works with firmware 3.1 yet. Is this true? Is there another option (that works with windows) or do I need to chill and wait awhile? Thanks for any assistance.

If you could email me the solution I’d really appreciate it.
I had my iPhone 3G jailbroken, I think the program used was pwnage (cannot remember now), something happened and my Youtube doesn’t work and when I try to update to another firmware it won’t let me.
Is there a guide or steps where I can update my version: 2.1(5f136) to the latest firmware so I can also have the latest apps installed, currently most of my apps are stuffing up and usually kicks me out.

Hi ppl nothing to do with this pawnage thing but a bit of info for all you who had jailbroke on 3.0.1 and have updated to 3.1 in error and are waiting on redsnow to rejailbreak on windows os and who have not unlocked (I’m one of them who updated to 3.1 in error) I’m in uk and this is how I over come the jailbreak issue I contacted my local apple store and advised them that my phone kept on freezing they told me to back it up in iTunes and bring it in so they could do diagnostics on it they may tell u to do reset but tell them u have done this a few times and tell them u got new sim card too and it still does it before u go to them or send it back in post reset it to factory settings as they can’t do diagnostics they will send u another or give u one instore the new one I got was on 3.0.1 and older bb yeeehaaa jailbreak city worth a go

if its bricked or stuck on iphone logo u can downgrade from 3.1 3.0.1 by simply restoring to 3.0 with shift enter or option u must have the firmware 3.0 and u can doit ull have ur phone back i do this for people that brick there phone its easy that a baby can doit.

I have an ipod touch with 3.1.3 version. I used Spirit to jailbreak and after the Spirit screen said the jailbreak was successfulits hung on a screen that I’ve never seen before. It’s sort of fractal image with a load circle spinning in the center. That’s been going on for over 30 minutes. I tried installing Rain, but got a dll error. I can’t find a Blog post that tells me what to do. Can anyone help?
