3.1.3 Users Advisory

Author: BigBoss  //  Category: Jailbreak, News

So to all your 3.1.3 3GS users that cant jailbreak, this is a reminder to you. Update your computer’s hosts file right now to point to Saurik’s server. This should be a permanent change everyone that owns a 3GS should make. This allows you to down grade your firmware in the future. Even if you don’t care about jailbreaking, it is still a good idea. What if Apple releases a firmware that you hate in the future? This at least allows you the option to downgrade. It also guarantees your SHSH is stored.

While it’s unlikely 3.1.3 will ever be jailbroken since it is utterly worthless, it is still a good idea to get your SHSH stored. Once your hosts file is set up, anytime you restore, the signature is stored for you so that you can go back and restore to that firmware again in the future whether or not Apple decides you should or not.

To fix your computer, simply follow these steps:

OSX: Open the file /etc/hosts with a text editor.
Windows: open the file C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts with notepad:
Add the line:
74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com

Note: on windows you may need to “run as” administrator your notepad to get the file to save. On OSX, you may need to use sudo or su to get to root user.

Can you kindly provide me with the correct 411 on how to update my jailbroken 3g phone. I believe the issue I’m struggling with is that I am still using 2.2 fw. Thanks in advance and I’d be happy to donate.

  2. Randall Says:

I just got a new iphone (3.1.3). Is there a way to “downgrade” to 3.1.2??

If not and I make the change you are asking us to make, would I be able to jailbreak ever?
Are there plan to make 3.1.3 “jailbrakable” (that would be especially useful if 3.1.3 is as “worthless” as you say…

    Thanks,

Dude, can you please give us a more detailed explanation on the procedure of updating the computer’s host file? Noob here. Thanks in advance.

  8. Willem Says:

Thanks BUT have this added to the shouting message on 3GS jailbreak guide. i probably just upgraded my apple firmware when upgrading itunes. this offers itself automatically. now i have 3.1.3 as version and i read here that this is not jailbreakable
thanks for the upfront warning. and how to get back? i cant decipher that from these files.
step by step guides are not everyones talent i learned today.
maybe a better version of blackrain later? i do hope, as I dont want to mess with my iphone in downgrading without a very good guide that works. i tried redsn0w also, no effect: does not work with the correct version of the other file that the browser in redsn0w needs to open. shitty

  9. AK Says:

I just did the same thing, I had signed my iPhone to cydia “shsh”, modified the host file but couldn’t downgrade to 3.1.2. I guess we will have to wait for a new jailbreak.. :(

  10. FLX22 Says:

is there a site that could send me updates when would the new jailbreak will come out? im getting a hard time on downgrading my iphone. so i think i would just wait for the new jailbreak..

  11. Dragan Says:

You can jailbrake with snowbreeze but you can’t unlock.

  12. Anonymous Says:

The information is all over this site. You should gather all the info and decide whats best for you. There is morethan one way to update.

  13. Aaron Says:

You’re waiting on a new major update then, nobody is gonna touch 3.1.3 because that’s what Apple wants. They’re trying to trick developers into locating an exploit (which requires lots of work) and wasting it on a meaningless patch (which requires minimal work) and they’re not gonna let that happen. 3.1.3 won’t be jailbroken until another version is released that does something. The good news is 3.1.3 and whatever the new version is (probably 3.2) will have the same security hole so much like (I believe, correct me if I’m wrong) 3.1.2, 3.1.1, and 3.1 all had 24Kpwn and were all able to be jailbroken using blackra1n.

  14. sl xpress Says:

For folks who already have the 3.1.3 update on their phone, there are ways to downgrade it. I’m no expert, but I was able to put 3.1.2 on there after having 3.1.3 installed. Can’t find the link for the instructions I used, but I know they’re out there. What you can’t do is downgrade the baseband, which is something different. That is also updated automatically. With 3.1.2 you can still jailbreak your phone. I did it after having 3.1.3 installed. What you can’t do is use a different carrier than AT&T (in the US). The new baseband can’t be unlocked. In any case, there’s no real point in jailbreaking 3.1.3, since with some effort, even people like me unfamiliar with how to do this sort of thing can research how to downgrade the software step by step, simply by looking for it through search engines.

  15. Shrav Says:

You have to run Notepad as admin to change it. You can’t save it as a regular user, you don’t have permission.

  16. domino0323 Says:

Hi. I’m a ipod user and I know that this isn’t the right place to say it but I was wondering if this will still work on my ipod too. My ipod is 3g 32gb and its currently on 3.1.3. Is there going to be any hope to downgrade or jailbreak my ipod?

  17. Anonymous Says:

God some people are just plain dumb and stupid. STop posting “how do I jailbreak, blah blah blah” and read the previous fuk in comments!!!! Are u all braindead and don’t know how to search? U shouldn’t even consider TRYING to downgrade or jailbreak if ur that braindead!

  18. Richard Says:

Im running firmware 3.1.2 and backuped SHSH to Saurik’s server, “This device has a 3.1.3 ECID SHSH on file” display on the top of Cydia main page. Can i also restore 3.1.2 from now?

  19. cizko Says:

    Are you serious?!?!

    It is at: /etc/hosts

    *lol*

    1. Open up a Mac OS X Terminal (found here: /Applications/Tools/Terminal)

    2. type: sudo nano /etc/hosts

    3. type your password

    4. now you can edit your hosts file

    5. hit “ctrl” + “x” to quit the editor

    6. when prompted: hit “y” to save or “n” to discard your changes

    7. hit enter to save/discard and exit back to Terminal mode

    8. quit the Terminal app

    9. you’re done

How can I create a host file if it’s not in the system32/driver/ect?

  25. AK Says:

When u browse the host file, select all files from “file type” drop down menu then u will be able to find it.. Good luck only if u have old baseband

  26. Allen Says:

My friend did the update by mistake when I lent it to him, what a mistake that was:( Now seems no matter what I do I can’t back date; I’ve followed whats been said and still all I get is “Sorry can’t be done”. My host file has been edited like said and I am using redsn0w 0.9.4 but that does nothing even with 3.1.2. I used both cydia and Rock and did have SSH on file message’s from both stores. So what am I missing? Or is my fone ban from been ever JailBroken? >:(

  28. AK Says:

    Hey bigboss,
I really appreciate all hardwork you do for us.
I have 3gs with 3.1.3 new baseband, I have signed on cydia “make my life easier” when I had 3.1.2 then updated. I tried many times to downgrade or restore using the exact instruction but I always receive a message says “no file was found on cydia with this device details” or similar message. Do I have a chance to downgrade or restore using shsh? Or just have to wait till jailbreak is developed?
Your feedback will be highly appreciated

  29. AK Says:
