Great news for the jailbreakers. The iPod touch 2′s hole is still present in iPhone 3GS. This means a jailbreak will follow. From the dev team blog:
About 5 hours ago (Thursday evening, less than a week after the 3GS launch), we were able to verify that the 24Kpwn exploit that the hybrid team used on the iPod Touch 2G is still present in the bootrom of the iPhone 3GS. That means we can apply the same sort of technique used by our current redsn0w tool to jailbreak and unlock the iPhone 3GS.
This is great news! It seems this bootrom was cut in about the August 2008 timeframe, so the unfortunate early reveal of 24Kpwn earlier this year didn’t affect the iPhone 3GS.
For our technical notes on where the 24Kpwn exploit is in the 3GS, see here (pastebin hash of it is here). Our original blog post for when this exploit was first found is here.
And yes, ultrasn0w will be able to be used on the iPhone 3GS for you unlockers!
Important: Apple has not given up on the cat&mouse game, and in fact there are challenging aspects of the 3GS jailbreak that aren’t in the other devices. It’ll take some time to safely work these into our tools, but the fundamental weaknesses are there: The bootrom is exploitable via 24Kpwn, and the baseband is exploitable via ultrasn0w. (And just like with the 3G, ultrasn0w for 3GS requires that you not update your baseband when Apple comes out with new firmware.)

It’s what I’ve been holding off on buy the GS for. Everyone has been saying the new 3GS is boring. They wish they had their 3G jailbroken iPhone back. I’m glad I’ve held off to this point. Once jailbreak happens for the new one, I’ll make my purchase.

I am extremely glad I upgraded from 3G to the 3GS. The speed improvements are amazing! That by itself is worth it for me!

Does anything think it would matter to wait till the jailbreak comes out to buy the 3GS? Do you think apple will try and patch it soon?
June 26th, 2009 at 2:15 pm
It has been theorized that Apple will push out a baseband update to patch ultrasn0w very soon just like they did with yellowsn0w. I would go ahead and buy a 3GS soon so you can preserve the 4.28 baseband.

A very good message! Please continue… :-)

Sorry BigBoss but I don´t know where to post
this alert:
When you put into a “categories” folder or
into “Dock applications” in sbsettings the Mail app,
it deletes the option of “Mail, Contacts, Calendar” from the setting´s page, so if you put in a folder
Mail app you cannot configure it from settings.
Hope you can solve the issue !
THANSKS A LOT !

Just wanted to point out that Apple is on the record as saying that it won’t go out of its way to break jailbreaking.
Unlocking the device is another matter entirely. So, the reason this jailbreak wasn’t broken, is most likely due to Apple’s previously stated position. Sure, some future version of the software may eventually break the jailbreak. But I think the fact that this jailbreak still works is proof that Apple was true to it’s word.
But if you’re going to take the next step and actually unlock your iPhone from the AT&T store, all bets are off.

Same sentiment; looking forward to having SBSettings on the 3GS!

Agreed. It does feel alot faster. I hope this is not just because its not jailbroken yet. But then again i needed the 32gb storage capacity. But all in all it is definately faster then my jailbroken 3g.

There’s a news about 3GS Jailbreaking delay from Dev-Team…today I’m planning to buy 3GS…but I’m wondering when Apple will release firmware 3.01 so Dev-Team will release 3GS Jailbreak ….
June 29th, 2009 at 7:56 am
Still haven’t upgraded to firmware 3.0 for my 3G.
Waiting for quickpwn. Any news on this?
June 30th, 2009 at 3:32 pm
Yes. That is why if you only want it if it is Jailbreakable, buy it now, before the next update possibly takes away your chances of jailbreaking. Make sure to backup your iboot.
