4.3.1 Jailbreak, Hold Off

Author: BigBoss  //  Category: News

So today, Modmyi put up a post about 4.3.1 tethered jailbreak being out.  But there is a reason I did not post about this. In fact, it should all be avoided.

Tethered jailbreak means that when your device reboots, you will have a connect to itunes logo on your screen and have to rerun the jailbreak software to get out of this mode. There is a “real” 4.3 jailbreak on its way out soon. You should all wait for that.

Further, the 4.3.1 tethered jailbreak bundles are incomplete and do not provide updated kernel patches.  The pwnage bundle going around is not a one created by the dev team. The ih8snow products are put together with no new code. Instead, they only assemble new bundles using existing older jailbreak exploits. (This is also why I never recommend using these products). No testing has been done, developers have not updated any tweaks / extensions for 4.3.1, etc. The update is not critical by any means, simply avoid it for now.

As for “this must be better than nothing right?” No, it really isn’t. I believe since the sandboxing issue isn’t worked out that Safari will be broken after Cydia runs the first time. To test this, I decided to jailbreak with it but unfortunately for me, after the jailbreak completes, Cydia won’t even load.

Well, at lest for those who just bought iPhones and have only iOS 4.3 and 4.3.1 installed and no shsh, sn0wbreze on pt works for them, dont you think? :)

  2. Ur luck Says:

By what time the official jb will be out ?

  3. James Says:

Thanks for the info, looking forward to 4.3 jailbreak. Kepp us posted

  4. BigBoss Says:

No, it actually won’t as I indicated above in my post that the kernel patches and sandboxing issues are not solved.

“I tested the iphone 4 version of this “jailbreak” and cydia won’t even load the first time.”

Sounds like you forgot to run iBooty. I used sn0wbreeze to put both my iPod touch 4G and iPad 1 on jailbroken 4.3.1. The only issues I’ve seen is that Action Menu refuses to install and PKGBackup won’t run. Of course I’m not updating my iPhone 4, because having a (possibly) not-bootable phone away from a computer isn’t acceptable. But the new Bluetooth tethering between iPad and iPhone is nice. This article really seems like FUD.

  6. Steve Says:

SSH to /System/Library/CoreServices and open SystemVersion.plist. Change 4.3.1 to 4.2.1 save and reboot. ActionMenu will install and run without issue. Sn0wbreeze 2.4b1 and iBooty are very stable and work fine for IOS 4.3.1 iPhone 4.

  7. Majin Says:

Sorry, i’m new to this website as well with the iphone 4, i have the newest update on my phone, but its not unlocked yet. will this unlock it for me? i only want to use my phone with different sim card, no cydia or anything.

  8. Anonymous Says:

    No it won’t unlock it.

  9. jpmarch Says:

Nice & Thks for the info…Summarizing, it’s much better to wait “some days hopefully?” for an Official untethered JB !

  10. Steven Paul Says:

Has anyone else tested this renaming trick for action menu?I’ve tried Sn0wbreeze 2.4b1 and 4.3.1 seems quite stable for use with iPad 1. Once you run ibooty and cydia (and remember to stay by the computer for any post installation tethered reboots needed) your good. I wouldn’t recommend it for anything else though.

  11. Yuriy Says:

How potentially dangerous is change of iPhone’s 05.16.01/4.3 to iPad’s 06.15.00 with respect to gps functionality and accuracy? I understand it may cause warranty issues with apple too.

Think you’ll find you have to run iBooty for it to work. (:

    Hi Guys,

Tried the tethered JB with Pwnagetool for 4.3.1 on my iPhone 4 and no luck, Cydia still crashes every time you click it.
My advice is to leave it a few days or even a week or two before the untethered official JB is released properly.

  14. Ty Says:

    For me it works fine.
Even PkgBackup Works like a charm…

    Maybe luck?!

  15. pb Says:

Agreed with the avoid posting. I bricked my new iphone 4 with the RedmondPie directions. I so wish I had seen this posting first.

Any pointers where I can go to try and unbrick?
I restored 4.3.1 which came preloaded and the OS is running (iTunes responds, home button lights up the backlight) but I still have only a black screen – no graphics at all. Forced reboot and all… no joy.

  16. jpmarch Says:

Hum ! I’m a litlle bit confused about who is in charge of iOs 4.3.1. untethered JB final release for all devices (except iPad2)
I understand (but not sure) this is iPhone Dev Team Comex who has received exploit details from Stefan Esser for Beta testing (Stefan Esser refused JB release responsability)

    Am I Right ??

  17. WeeDuck Says:

Thank you, Most things I jailbreak for are now installing and working because I did this.

  18. Razofallama23 Says:

Hey my cydia sources won’t pop up and when I type in a source I will update then crash pls help I know this is off topic but pls help!

  19. Steve Says:

Put into DFU mode and the restore with iTunes. To get into DFU mode with the USB cable inserted press both power and home buttons for 10 seconds then release the power button and keep holding the home button for 10 more seconds.
If still not working try running iReb to put phone into DFU.

  20. Steve Says:

Yep you have to do a tethered boot for Cydia to run.

  21. Roland Says:

I’m using 4.3.1 right now and I didn’t save my shsh blob when I was using 4.2.1. Snowbreeze worked out for me. I’m just avoiding having a low battery or turning off my iPod touch.

  22. Steve Says:

Try re-installing Cydia. In Cydia go to Manage>Packages>Cydia Installer>Modify>ReInstall.

  23. LFZ Says:

In my experience the 4.3.1 tethered jailbreak worked fine. Mostly. If you follow the redmondpie instructions it works except you should get the latest version ot the ramdisk fixer. (the package comes with 1.7.1 I think and it will force you to use 1.7.2 when you run pwnagetool.

After that though, I had success with the tethered boot if I put the phone into DFU mode first, then ran the script. Also note that it takes forever and when the script finishes it will give some kind of error and your phone screen will be white for a while. It will boot after that, you just have to be patient.

Also while cydia works great, as does SBsettings, sprintomize etc, some apps do not. (Winterboard, Activator complains when installed with SBsettings but actually seems to work fine otherwise.

I am new to this. My iPhone has been jailbroken since the summer. But I haven’t ever upgraded the firmware. What do I do whe. You say its safe to do?

  25. Luis Says:

    Cmon…
Dont you think Bigboss wouldn’t know that we need to use ibooty to boot our iDevices??
Its really easy to look smart…but your not!

  26. smgbaby Says:

When is it safe to jailbreak iphone 4, 4.3.1?

  27. Steve Says:

    Cmon…
What makes you think all replies are directed at Bigboss?? Oh, April 1st, now I get it.

  28. Steve Says:

When the dev team releases the next Redsnow.

  30. Dss Says:

Just got iPad 1 with 4.3.0. My first IDE ice.
I used tiny umbrella to back up shsh and jail broke 4.3.0 using sn0wbreeze tethered.

Then updated to 4.3.1 and did tiny umbrella shsh again

    Again ran tethered sn0wbreeze jb

Works fine. Cydia works. It all looks the same as the 4.3.0 jb

Can’t wait for untethered patch tonight.

  31. Oliver Says:

I jailbroke my iphone 4 but I’m having problems with it. The icon for Cydia is blank and it reloads ver and over when I open it. Can I re-do this or undo the jailbreake thing? If so, how?
