We have another version of Categories with more internal changes for testing for any testers. Install instructions are:
1) Download the deb
2) Copy to iPhone via ssh into /tmp and install with dpkg -i /tmp/categories_2.27.90.deb
Note: if you have categoriessb installed make sure you have updated to v1.1 or newer before installing this! (You been warned).
The major changes from Ashikase:
- Categories now support non-English character names; this includes punctuation
- All category creation/deletion/updating is handled by new CategoryTool
- Categories no longer runs as root
Other notes:
- As part of the non-English support, newly created categories use a
generic /Applications/Category### directory name. To help themers,
Categories.app now lists the path below the name of each category.
- CategoryTool is designed to be used by end-users as well, if they want
to use it. It includes a built-in help that describes the options. (Would require command line support in SSH).

I am not sure if this is a bug of CategoriesSB or Categories it self.
Here is how to reproduce:
1. create a Category (e.g. ABC) & add some icons
2. Remove the added app via Cydia / iTunes
3. Open ABC on Springboard, a blank space will be shown at that icon location
4. Start Categories and choose ABC, the removed app is no longer in the list
5. Quit Categories
6. Open ABC on Springboard, became blank
7. Start Categories and all the icons in ABC are gone (and hidden from springboard)

can we install o top or better start from zero?

Anyay to backup App Order in Categories?
is their a file that we can copy through SSH?
(like springback for springboard)
This would be useful, when one has to restore the phone?

Is there any chance that a future version of Categories will support WebClip Icons? It’s really annoying that I can’t hide my “Remote Buddy” icon inside a folder like I can hide everything else.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:02 am
I had this exact problem last night too.
Fortunately, I did screen prints of all Categories screen so at least I had the app names. Adding them back was fairly easy after that. Even though they were all “hidden” to the Springboard screen, Categories recognized them as being unassigned to any group in it’s Add menu so I just tapped on names and back they came.

Either is OK.
November 21st, 2009 at 4:33 am
I’m not familiar with App Order.
However, to backup a category, you need to save two items:
– the application directory for the category (e.g. /Applications/Category001.app)
– the preferences file for the category (e.g. /var/mobile/Library/Preferences/com.bigboss.categories.Category001.plist)
I hope to eventually add a backup/restore method, but that won’t happen anytime soon.

Please keep the comments related to this beta; there won’t be any new features/versions until *this* version is properly tested and released.
Yes, I *want* to support webclips. However, they are treated completely differently from applications, and will require a lot of work to implement. So this feature, like backup/restore, won’t happen anytime in the immediate future.

I know it’s not too difficult to set things back to what it was, but it’s still a bug which should be fixed.

Is this program no longer being developed by BB? No offense Ashikase but your programming isn’t as clean as BB usually puts out and you tend to charge for your apps. Will this app continue to be free?
November 23rd, 2009 at 5:02 am
Offense taken.
I have only charged for one of my apps, CategoriesSB. All of my other software is free *and* open source.
And as for my programming not being clean… if you only knew the work I put into cleaning up Categories…
I’ll stop here before I type something I’ll regret later, but be assured that you have really pissed me off.

I found a bugg. When I have a theme selected, and start a game within my games category, the game disapears showing only the theme background. This happens with any theme. Any idea how to fix? I thought categories was made for this
November 24th, 2009 at 12:20 am
This happens with 2.27.90? Did it happen with the previous version (2.27.2)?
Are you using CategoriesSB?
November 24th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
Will future versions of CategoresSB, remove the Title Bar?, it cuts off icons with some springboard mods.
Thanks!
November 24th, 2009 at 7:22 pm
how do you “install” this with dpkg?
i like the way the categories work on my friend’s iPod but he doesn’t remember how he got it. he said it was from here and i dont know what exactly to do. help?
November 25th, 2009 at 7:29 pm
I wonder if anyone could help me. I just installed Categories last night (v2.27) on my week old iPhone 3GS and I am having trouble with 3 icons not behaving. If ANYONE could help it would be so very much appreciated!

Thank you :)

The current version of CategoriesSB already offers an option to turn off the title bar.
In the Categories app, tap edit in the upper left, then tap the blue/white arrow to the right of the category you wish to change. In the next screen, turn off “Show Category Name”.

If you are not familiar with installing packages manually, I would recommend waiting for the official release.
November 26th, 2009 at 11:10 am

hope this bug fixed soon. :)
November 26th, 2009 at 11:21 am
“- All category creation/deletion/updating is handled by new CategoryTool”
i think it can be used to delete “bug categories” when happen after reset on iphone setting, but its not. :(

*Idiot* (Not you ashikase)
November 28th, 2009 at 10:00 am
I just installed CategoriesSB 1.2 and Categories 2.28 (in that order). Conversion went fine and folders can up fine with no issues.
I like the addition of the “/Applications/.app” text on the screen. Looks more complete with it than without. I especially like the new “Scroll Horizontally” option when editing the Prefs for a folder. The behavior is exactly like the original springboard horizontal scroll.
(Forgive me for posting enhancement suggestions here; not sure where else to post them)
Enhancement suggestions:
- When program quits, how about returning to the original folder instead of to the main springboard (not sure if this is even possible to code but I thought I’d ask)
- Move edit of name and icon into Prefs menu for folder (instead of having settings in two places)
- I have a zillion folder icons (plus some I’ve added). How about grouping the icons by name or support for subdirectories if they’re there? That way, if I felt like changing all my icons to Vista, then I could see only the Vista icons with a few taps instead of scrolling several pages down?
- How about allowing the changing of the folder by scrolling horizontally? So a left gesture on the first page (within a folder) gives you the previous folder, and a right gesture on the last page gives you the next folder…
Categories/CategoriesSB is awesome. Thanks for creating this. It’s one of the main reasons I like my JB phone so much.
November 28th, 2009 at 12:20 pm
just installed categories 2.28 and categoriessb 1.2 and love the horizontal scroll!!!
just wondering, i know its possible to change the background. but is it possible to change the background of each page with horizontal scroll now?
thanks and keep up the great work ashikase!

it appears after this update version 2.2.8 i no longer am able to choose an icon for my newly setup folder. i have tried this many times. am i doing something wrong or is the icon choice no longer available.
November 28th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
I just installed the version 2.2.8 after a restore but now when I add an app to Categories it’s displayed on the folder and on the Springboard.
What shell I do?
November 28th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
rambot,
There’s actually two different settings screens. In Categories, tap “edit”, then tap on the title of the folder (not the blue arrow/circle). A dialog “What do you want to edit?” with the options “Name”, “Icon”, and “Cancel” will pop up.
I just tried and I can choose/change an icon for a folder.
November 28th, 2009 at 1:57 pm
Ok got that. Many thanks. Obviously not the same as the old one. That automatically allowed icon choice. Not sure how one would know to go to edit to find the icons but still found it now. Secondly though i have another problem of the app in the folder and on springboard as well. Many thanks for the reply.
November 28th, 2009 at 4:46 pm
I got a problem when im triying to add some apps into a folder the app still remains in the springboard and also is in the folder but i cannot hide the app, what sould i do?
thanxs.
November 28th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
same here!!!
November 28th, 2009 at 6:27 pm
obviously was not tested properly first. definately causing problems here since the update tonight. and we are not mind readers. how would anyone know they had to slect edit and then icon and then choose which icon they want. it was not like this in the old one. secondly now my apps stay on the springboard instead of dissappearing into the folders i have made.
November 29th, 2009 at 6:09 am
is anyone going to answer the problem with this app. it leaves a copy of the app on the springboard after you put them in folders.
November 29th, 2009 at 1:54 pm
yeah i am having the same problem myself where it leaves a copy of it on the springboard.
November 29th, 2009 at 4:30 pm

I used( iFile) to sole the Problem, but the application still appears in Categories, name of the folder appears as (null). If I hit edit —> delete for this folder, after respring or relaunch Categories (Radio Station Folder )is still there.

Is there any way to add and remove apps from a category automatically? Basically i want to run a script to remove all apps from a category, and another script to add them back. The category is locked, so it acts like a parental control thing.
January 27th, 2010 at 3:37 am
i aint able to lock category folders if i install categoriesb.
