Late Friday the news was made official and quite large news it was; Cydia owns Rock
This will mean different things for different people, but we feel it is a great move for the jailbreak community. Cydia provides a technically superior installer and mechanisms for developers to give you the full experience, the best solution for getting a variety of software onto your device freely, making your phone or device a complete mobile computing platform.
Having customers be able to get all their apps from one place is a good thing, and that place is the safest delivery system for all kind of things from apps to mods, themes and multimedia. Cydia can only get better with all our hard work and determination.
Update: Some changes have already begun to appear; Cydia’s home screen has been reorganized and updated somewhat. More great things are sure to come in the days, weeks and months.

Think this is a very bad move for developers .
Cydia Store still lacks a lot of features that are A MOST in virtual store.
1. Bad support.
2. Slow response times on developers questions.
3. No way of managing your apps.
4. Takes more then a week to add a new application.
5. Bad payments/downloads statistics.
6. Only 1-2 person handling more then 400 developers.
7. Has no way of “pushing” certain/new apps for customers.
8. No promotion codes.
9. Slow as hell !!
(and i have more then 5 apps on sell on both Cydia & Rock. so i know what i’m talking about !).
This is a sad day for the jailbreak-developers community.

I agree with the above, but will not be anonymous. Rock at least had decent customer support (they always responded within 24 hrs) and their purchase system worked fantastic. Cydia however (much as I very much appreciate all he has done for the JB community) can be arrogant, the pay pal system works badly (waited 5 days for an app once) and I once waited five months for an email response only to be told to ‘chill out I am very busy man’. Prick!

This is both good and bad.
Rock was clearly in this to be greedy and make money. The bulk of their applications were for sale. The bulk of cydia apps are free.
The rock your phone garbage application has forced me to restore iphones to sort out problems, cydia never once did this to me.
I’ve only read of the horrible/lack of customer service from rock. People actually had to resort to purchasing applications a second time to solve problems that cs wouldn’t address.
I can’t speak to Jay’s issues, but I’m not entirely happy with his payment system either. When you purchase something you can’t rotate the purchase screens or zoom in on the super tiny print. He should fix this. Amazon usually takes a dozen times before a purchase will complete. Yeah Cydia ain’t perfect either, but I’ll take it over having to restore regularly.

I’ve NEVER had an issue with purchasing apps through Cydia, and I’ve bought 90% of them (Tweaks that is). I’ve gotten the needed support within 24 hours of asking, from 95% of developers. The other 5%, were over seas and probably didn’t understand my question, but I’m sure there’s an app for that. I’ve never used Rock either, because I learn off others mistakes. To many people I know complain about having to restore because of Rock. Cydia may lack some functions like landscape & speed, but that’s where Rock may pick up the slack. I for one LOVE the merge. Now hopefully it will be one app that will provide a nicer experience overall. Hats off to the developers of both companies. And do continue to provide what we are all here for. FREEDOM!!!

They should keep this double store because I had issues with cydia source problem that won’t bring up any of my packages by the way I don’t develop or anything but rock has saved ne so manytimes were cydia has messed up one way or another so what if cydia crashes then we screwed huh I been messing round about a year now so come on keep them both so it is fail safe to each other combine them with the companies but keep the app stores separate I think cydia ant ready for a mass change like this an I bet there’s going to be problems the first few months so why don’t u avoid all problems an keep the 2 separate to back each other up 2 can do more than one don’t you think

Rock and Cydia are obviously for the money. why spend so much time on this? Love and Art? They work with love and art but not for love and art.
There were a few things I liked about rock and was that it would tell you of updates that were available from time to time… You would have to open up cydia to do this.
I do feel that there are many developers that are not contributing to the jailbreak itself in order to make this community a successful business.

I don’t really care who owns who as long as it all works. My problem is that I own some Rock Apps. I can’t figure out how to create a Cydia Store Account. All the instrux talk about being able to use Google or Facebook ids or even a Rock ID. Where the heck do you load it

I’m really bummed about this. I just got my iPad replaced and now they’ve removed Rock so I can’t restore all of my previous apps.
Plus, Cydia is painfully slow and the UI pales in comparison.
If someone could post a repo with the latest Rock on there, I’m sure they would make a lot of people happy.

Stop whining ! Cydia beats Rock any day. I’m not basing my opinion on 1 or 2 experiences, nor am I following any trend of 13 yr old kids (with their years of experience HA!)I’m basing mine on who runs it and who has the most apps. Granted Rock had some exclusive apps Cydia didn’t have access to. Saurik will turn Cydia into the best darn Jailbreakers app source you could hope for.

yahooo! Down with rock extensions! This is awesome. ALthough I agree that rock was pretty and faster in a lot of ways… but Cydia has never caused me to have to restore my phone. I look forward to the next major update of the store as Im sure it will be awesome.

Too many flames.
Start up Cydia and read the note on “Cydia += Rock Your Phone?” It answers most questions.
“Q: Can you at least let me filter out all of the themes in Cydia? There are way too many themes: themes suck
A: Certainly. In fact, Cydia has had this feature for two years now! Simply click Sections, then Edit, and turn off anything you don’t want, like themes, ringtones, or fun itself.”
I did this and now Cydia starts up in a few seconds and my changes section is nice and tidy.

I much prefer cydia as I had some problems with Rock. I did find it long for Jay to respond to issues although I’m sure he’s super busy and without cydia, the jb community would have much. Bigboss has always been fantastic with me and lightning fast with his responses. I kind of liked having both as 2 heads are better than one but I bet this new merger will make Cydia Rock. :)

I honestly never knew there was a trick to doing this. Ive only been jail broken for about three weeks and have bought many (and my only) apps through Cydia … when i hit the purchase button at the upper right of the app description, it asks me how i want to authenticate. I chose Google, the google page came up, I logged in, it then asks me how I wanted to pay, I chose PayPal, that screen came up, I logged in and walla, app was purchased. I clicked close and Install.
There was no trick. The first time I bought an app, I think i filled out some extra info like phone number but I honestly don’t remember it all happened so seamlessly.
FAR FROM Apple Store simplicity, but all they need to make it Apple Store simple is a merchant account for collecting money from credit cards, and a system for users to create a Cydia account that is tied to a CC. At that point, purchase and download can happen with one click.

Ultimately I think this will be good for the community. I like both Cydia & Rock, and haven’t had big problems with either, but I’ve had a few issues with both.
My biggest concern is regarding support. Rock was run like a business, and they generally were quite responsive when I have had issues. Cydia, on the other hand, has been run more like a (very sophisticated) underground hacker site. Jay seems pretty arrogant to me, and as much as I appreciate all he’s done for the community, he rarely responds to bug reports or fixes bugs unless it has something to do with the Cydia store. It’s true that things like MobileSubstrate are free, but let’s face it, it’s the foundation of his entire business. And make no mistake, it’s a business generating a lot of income for him, even if he doesn’t always treat it like a business.
Example: The most recent version of MobileSubstrate causes some AppStore apps to crash on startup. I written to Jay about this, provided logs, etc. and so have other folks. None of us has ever gotten a response, and it’s been months. The only fix is to install an older version of MobileSubstrate (or uninstall it entirely). This works (though you must be somewhat technically savvy to do it), but many many Cydia apps force you to update MS even when UNINSTALLING THEM! This is very annoying. It’s gotten to the point that I rarely buy or install anything from Cydia anymore, because I’ve gotten tired of doing the dance.
I’ve purchased a lot from both Cydia and Rock, but I am waiting to see where they go from here. I wish both companies the best. I hope that this new arrangement will improve the jailbreak community by building on each other’s strengths. Time will tell.

Both have strong points & shortcomings, now we have to deal with “what is”. Does anyone know if the actual “Rock” app and “Rock Extensions” can be safely removed or would there most likely be dependencies between some installed apps (I.E. download/purchased when Rock was “Rock”) that would require keeping these “Rock” Apps. Also, and I only ask this because all that commented sees to be in the know, if there are apps to detect programs with memory leaks and apps to clean up data left behind on the phone? My RAM is getting crunched fierce and I can’t figure out which app has the memory leak so I’m constantly re-springing or re-booting. And my disk is nearly full and I know there are some pretty big unindentifiable files on the phone that don’t seem like they’re necessary, but I’d rather not take the chance of bricking it by removing or changing the file names to see if they’re actually required.

2 of my purchased apps from Rock, icallbr(callclear) and iprotect both from Daniel(hdsq2) are not registering in cydia. I’m unable to use these 2 only, since I reinstalled them in cydia.I don’t understand why just these 2 have not transfered my purchased license from rock to cydia.

Cydia being the superior app? That can only come from a person who never saw the Rock app, which was so much faster and more stable. Cydia always stupidly reloads data for ages, crashes when you Queue up several packages. Rock even looked much better.
Please bring back Rock App and bury this Cydia dinosaur for good!

Unsure if anyone pointed this out, I did not read every one of the remarks, but your sites’ design is really a litte tweaked in Opera running on XP.
