Update: Saurik has released “PDF Patch” which solves the problem on all jailbroken devices. No need to update to solve the PDF exploit. Further, Apple did not patch older devices. This means that in order to have a secure older device such as a 3g, *you must jailbreak*.

A Word of Warning. Apple released firmware updates today:
4.0.2 – iPhone 4, iPhone 3gs, iPhone 3g, some iPod touch
3.2.2 – iPad.
These firmware updates WILL PROBABLY PREVENT YOU FROM JAILBREAKING because Apple has fixed the hole that allows the JailbreakMe.com method to work easily.
We advise you do NOT update if you want to stay with jailbreak. However, these updates address a serious security issue with opening PDF documents. BigBoss Note: it looks like Saurik will have a security patch probably out today/tomorrow that solves this on all devices without the need for updating to 4.0.2. He announced it here: http://twitter.com/saurik and has a beta deb to test if anyone is interested.
Because you value your jailbreak stability and your security, please try `PDF Loading Warner` in Cydia which can prevent automatic loading of PDF files into the viewer by first asking your confirmation. This can help to avoid unintended loading of PDF documents on websites and in email.
Now may also be the best time to ensure you have backups of your SHSH blobs in Cydia or using TinyUmbrella, if you have not already done this.

Would this work:
On a 3g currently jailbroken/unlocked with Pwangetool /Ultrasnow.
Restore to stock 4.0.1 using Option Restore in iTunes;
Use Jailbreakme on 4.01 to jailbreak;
instal ultrasnow to unlock;
OR
Create a custom IPSW file using PwangeTool 4.0.1 and leave my baseband where it is.
It must end up unlocked to use on T Mobile.

Well, I guess I can live with the security flaw a while longer. It didn’t hurt me till now… ;-)
And since the jailbreak is essential to me (for SBSettings & BiteSMS alone), I could live with staying on 4.0.1 forever…as long as it’s jailbroken. :-)

I will receive my iPhone4 this Saturday, which most likely will have firmware 4.0 as factory settings.
Can I just update to 4.0.1 using the original ispw file when 4.0.2 has been released?
Will iTunes reject 4.0.1 and only permit to upgrade to 4.0.2?

Just in case anyone cares. So I was on craigslist today looking for an older 3G. I came across an add, 3G iPhone 220, I got him down to 170… On the way home I take a good look at this 3G I had just bought, HOLLY SH!T it an 8GB 3Gs…!
What a break, wait it’s been updated to 4.0.2, dam no jailbreak. So I give it a shot, download 4.0.1 off the Internet. Place the iPhone in DFU mode, BAM it down grades with no problem. The kicker is, I called the guy I bought the phone from and asked, has this phone ever been jailbroken

After installing this app on my 3GS I have a big problem – please can any body tell me the number in bracket 4.0 (_____) because Cydia forcibly clear three apps with out making any changes to systemversion.plist file back to 4.0 from 4.0.2 (8A400) so I can change back manually – Please Please

help… i uninstalled mobileterminal 426 and it also took with it the PDF Patch, Frash Toggle, and Firmware 4.0.2 itself, and won’t let me install anything else now in cydia (claiming wrong firmware version) something is snafu’ed here. hope big boss is going to fix it… thanks.

Strangeness here too: in Cydia both PDF Patch and Firmware is in the package que to be removed, and I DON’T want to remove it. I can’t clear it either – complains that it can’t due to dependencies or conflicts, the one app pointing to the other.

im having the sensor prob. whenever im making a call or receiving a call, when putting near my ear it goes dark which is totally normal but when you put it away from your ear your screen phone shud have something back. mine didnt. it jus stays dark blank until u or the caller hangs up. then click the lock button to make it reappear again. sensor issue or my sensor defected? is it becoz of the new firmware. im on 3gs 4.01. tried restore it without jailbreaking it, still with the sensor issue. at first i thought its jailbreak that causes it but it doesnt. even b4 jb it, its like this already. help!

I have a problem which i need advice. I jailbreak my 4G 4.0.1 using jailbreakme. And i when to register my phone in my wife’s itunes but did not update to 4.0.2. Is that a mistake registering? ndy71… i think you need to authorize the itunes copy you’re using to the account you used to purchase apps. if you’re using apps from apptrackr it shouldn’t matter but you still have to a) install appsync 4.0 or similar and b) sync a free/paid app first.
