I lost tetherme on my 3g yesterday afternoon… I have reinstalled and rebooted multiple times, but tethering option is still not available in network settings. Anybody having this issue? Could it be associated with 4.2?

Airplay is the only thing that we should consider updating to 4.2

For the iPad this update is pretty much a must for novice jailbreaker, giving all the functionality of a 4.1 device, i.e. Multi-tasking, folder organization, backgrounding, airprint, and many more additional tweaks which fixes many of the current issues plaguing the current firmware. However for the more seasoned jailbreaker all this functionality can be had through apps and tweaks from cydia. It’s a tough one, I’ve made the mistake of updating, it is better than 3.2.2 but it means I have to start again, if your iPad is fully tweaked don’t bother, for newbs it’s a must!

What about the Baseband / Modem Firmware 02.10.04 unlock for iPhone 4 with iOS 4.1?

I’m desperately waiting for it because my AT&T contract has expired, not to mention I’m not even in the US anymore.

I normally wouldn’t mind. I’m a patient man. The problem is that I paid for a lot of apps and themes in Cydia…, I jailbroke the iPod touch 2nd Gen successfully under ios4.2.., however my iPhone 3Gs is where the problem lies. Because of this infinite loop after updating in Cydia, I was forced to restore my phone. My question is: how do I downgrade back to 4.1 with my saved umbrella shsh? I never asked this but is it possible to downgrade with my saved shsh from Cydia? If so, how? If someone could answer these questions for me it would be highly appreciated.

The article is partly wrong. There are a few thing u can get by updating to 4.2 if course. I have jailbroken 4.2.1 with redsnow without any issues. My jailbroken apps works just fine. Also, the tethering part and iPhone – that is wrong as well. It used to be the case with blackrain etc. But interestingly and to my surprise you CAN boot the iPhone without connecting to computer, only that you cannot use your jailbroken apps and cydia. But you can use all legit apps and phone.

Same problem, on an iPhone 4 running 4.1. Warning to all: do NOT update Mobile Substrate in Cydia. Some major problem there.

What OS do you have? I don’t think Fontswap has been updated for 4.x yet. Try the Bytafont (sp?) app.. it works pretty well but doesn’t have all the features that Fontswap has.

There is for iPhone 3G users. My 4.1 was so slow that even killing all running processes several times a day didn’t make it usable. So far the 4.2.1 seems incredible! It barely even gets stuck anymore!

Use Tiny Umbrella and turn of the TSS Server

On windows in iTunes hold shift and click restore then find your 4.1 ipsw, in Mac I believe it’s command+restore. It will restore as long as you have fixed your hosts file and have valid shsh’s (you said you do)

Sorry but I have a new iPhone 4 and I don’t even know what jailbreaking is! I have been tying to find out why I have 4.4 g of ‘other’ on my phone and in reading other threads, people say I need to download ifile and search for files I apparently don’t need. I seriously don’t know what I am doing and now that I read the warning, I have no clue what to do. All I know is there must be something big on my iPhone to warrant 4.4 g of my precious memory!

Soon??? I hate all the loading, caching, reloading, loading updates, loading package info, downloading package, respringing, loading, caching, reloading, and loading updates again. When I accidentally click a button and try to drag my finger off it loads the ad anyway. It’s glitchy and buggy and slow. If I want to remove a package from the queue I have to clear the queue. The package management sucks and there’s no backup of which packages you have installed.

it actually WAS a bug fix that i was looking for.
When i upgraded to 4.1, my car stereo would no longer play audio correctly and 4.2 fixes that.

Apple needs to step it up all this and more have been out on android ie video streaming online air play multitasking(fast app switching not even legit multitasking) I happen to be a very young techy that has an iPhone 4 and know it’s potential. It can whoop Evo’s butt easily but apple restrains it. ( I bet Steve jobs properly has an evo or jailbroken iPhone) I really think until the software does not step it up I am sticking to 4.1. And for those you actually want all the stuff and Evo does I am putting up a new repo soon that has all like an andriod update giving u all it’s external features. I am telling u now if iPhone 5 does not have 4g and even more high res and bigger screen, and a wider variety of options and not leaving customers with iPhones( right out of the box) feeling heart broken and returning their iPhones and going to sprint or verizon the next day to get an htc or android apple is going nowhere and they will not “revoluntize the phone”. That my feeling on things and the only reason to update would be because you have an iPad. Which I also have and suggest you use un jailbreak for at least a month then if you arent liking you should jailbreak using like limera1n or redsn0w. Have a great day guys.

I believe if the tethering option is lost, then you need to go to Cellular Network Settings and enter configuration values in cellular apn (top of page) then tethering should appear.

Boy, am I sure glad I haven’t updated my iPod Touch since 3.1.2. I laugh at the idiots who always want to update, no update I’ve seen is worth it, unless Apple does something amazing, I’ll never update. New jailbreaks don’t mean anything to me as I’m using good ol’ Blackra1n and stuck with it. I’ve got a iPhone 3G old bootrom, so I updated to iso 4.2.1 hoping for all the new retires apple was advertising. After updating I got no new features at all.!!! No airplay no AirPrint no new text tones absoloute nothing.!!!! A complete waste of time updating if you have an iPhone 3G. I was just lucky I could re jailbreak again. I will seriously reconsider wether or not to upgrade the next time apple release an update as them seem to be leaving the iPhone 3G users behind.

I still have 4.0 on my iPhone 4…and still love it. Eventhough there has been upgrades to the iOS, you can mimick them with new mods from Cydia.

I have a 3G and just used RedSnow. Easy to use but I can not get my WiFi to work. I tried 3 different router but the phone will not even pick any of them up. I also reinstalled the jailbreak 4 times but have this same issue.

My 3G is remarkably faster on 4.2.1 then it was on 3.1.3

There’s nothing at the moment however you can use the latest redsnow to jailbreak 4.2.1 and unlock the phone. The programme uses the iPad 3.1.3 firmware along side iPhone 4.2.1 firmware. The iPad firmware is used to exploit the latest baseband and installs it to your phone. However this voids any warranty with apple as the baseband can’t be reverted as of yet and you won’t be able to upgrade through iTunes at all! the only future way to upgrade will be with custom ipsw (snowbreeze) until this exploit can be reverted! Hope this helps

If you have updated your iPad to 4.2, download redsnow and rejailbreak! That’s what I did. Just use redsnow, install cydia first, then let the iPad reboot. After reboot, hook it up to your computer, run redsnow again and check the box to “just boot tethered”. Let redsnow do its thing and you will have a fully functioning iPad with jailbreak and cydia. I even downloaded vWallpaper and imported an iPad sized video using iFile and now I have video wallpaper on my pad! It’s sweet! Good luck, the key is to not let your iPad run out of juice because if it does, you have to run redsnow again to boot back up. Some of the cydia programs I run require a reboot. I had to reboot with redsnow after those installs. Not a big deal at all…

I really want the 4.2.1 update so I have updated.
Now I try to jailbreak and it works fine, but after a while the pad refuse to boot properly (apple logo only, locked on that if I boot without DFU mode and I cannot enter DFU mode if I try to).

I have dont 3 tries:
Nr. 1: installed Cydia – boot – sb settings – boot – lots of apps including Frash by hand (found better solution now) – boot = locked on apple logo.

Nr. 2: (I assume I messed something up when installing frash by hand) cydia – boot – sb settings – boot – lots of programs – boot = locked on apple logo.

Nr. 3: (my idea boot after each install) cydia – boot – sb settings – boot – openssh – boot = locked on apple logo.

What am I doing wrong???

Um I updated to 4.2.1 and I didn’t see this message until after I jailbroke. I don’t know why you guys say not to I haven’t had any problems with the jailbreak other than it is untethered. But I though I would have to reboot after most appsownloads but I only restart springboard which is fine. But what I want to say is I would like to buy mewseek but I don’t wan to waste $9.99 if it doesn’t let me put songs in my library. So If it is possible could ya update mewseek to work 4.2.1. That would be real awesome and I would buy it then.

Dude tethered is not that extreme for the iPhone. You can use the phone fine if u boot after ur batt die u just can’t run cydia apps until u hook it up to redsn0w. Besides I never have to do that, my batt never runs out..

If ur toning bout changIng ur baseband when u use redsn0w click the option that says ” iPad Baseband” which should update the phones baseband to 6.15 I believe and then from there the repo666 source should be able to unlock it

There are 2 options, which I hope you’re iDevice fulfil at least one of them;

1- Restore it to iOS 4.1 if you have your SHSH saved.
2- Create a Costume firmware of iOS 4.2.1 using PWNtool (MAC)or search for an already created one on the web, Remember this only works if and Only if your iDevice is OLD BOOT ROM.

To all trying to unlock 5.14 baseband. There is a method. You install iPad firmware which is unlockable. The latest version of redsnow will unlock your 5.14 bb 3GS I have done it.

Keep in mind jailbreaking is for people with balls! Don’t nag for no shit. If you don’t like the way it is, just restore with iTunes once with your eyes closed bitch!

I’m desperately awaiting an untethered jailbreak for 4.2.1. I just got my old 3Gs replaced on warranty because it had cracks spidering up the back, and now I’m stuck with a new 3Gs running 4.2.1 with no SHSH blobs saved. Not looking forward to Christmas break at my mother-in-law’s house with no Internet connection and no MyWi to make up for it.

Change your wifi password on the router. Then re-find the network.

I found it nest to disconnect your phone from wifi and forget the network before J/Bing

There’s a new cydia that has An updated look, an quicker change loading times, etc.
Just google it from your idevice, download it (assuming you have safari downloadanager and ifile)
Go into ifile, find your downloads folder and press it, choose install, respring, and tada

Very informative. My big problem is I was running 3.1.3 for the LONGEST time, and it was jailbroken, of course. Then, one day, my iPod glitches randomly and it crashes at every reboot. I had to do a full restore, and that means 4.2.1 (I didn’t know I could select my firmware.).

I can’t figure out how to downgrade, so it looks like I’m stuck until mobile substrate gets improved.

I just used redsn0w 0.9.6b4 to jailbreak my I phone 3G but it is not working with my T-Mobile sim. What should I do now?

I caution bypassing the 4.2.1 upgrade. Reason= while running redsn0w version xxxb5, or 5b, I checked/selected the iPad ipsw and as a result,got stuck in “Restore Mode” at the end. no fun. It took me many attempts from Nac to PC and between iTunes 9 and 10 to get out being “bricked”. Now my phones are unlocked and running.

Well, I am what you would consider a “noob” to all this jailbreaking stuff. I have iOS 4.2 and jailbroke my phone a couple days ago using the redsn0w file. I don’t quite understand what you are talking about but beside not being able to use some themes and stuff I don’t seem to be having any problems. I’m running off a 3GS and is in week 36 of the production. But when all the bugs get fixed for the 4.2 iOS jailbreak do I need to update my jailbreak? Or will stuff automatically work?

Unlocking the 3G is a piece of cake. All you need is fuzzyband from cydia to downgrade your baseband to an unlockable one and use ultrasn0w. This way you don’t have to upgrade the baseband to that crappy 6.15 iPad baseband. And if you did, use fuzzyband to go back.

You cannot use iPhone with Sprint. Unlike AT&T and T-Mobile, Sprint does not use SIM cards, and as such Sprint cannot use an iPhone.

I am new to this. Just bought as Ipad and jailbreak. I tried to install “Categories” from Cydia but later had problems starting up my Ipad. In the end, I manage to start up after pressing both “On/Off” button and “Home” button at the same time. I deleted the “Categories” app after that. Read about OS 4.2 that allows better management of the apps but I agree that the same can be achieved with “Categories”. Can you advise what I have done wrong and how I should install “Categories” properly?

What if I already updated to ios 4.2.1 through apple, then jailbroke my 3gs on firmware 05.15.04. Is there any way to downgrade to ios 4.1 without loosing any of my data? If I use redsn0w, which version can I use for it to work properly and not be a tethered jailbreak? Thanks for your help

Hello, I jailbrocke my IPhone 3GS and it is tether boot, but like you said everytime you reboot the IPhone it goes in to ITunes connect logo, mine do not go there, mine boots up all the way up, but Cydia and Cydia downloaded programs don’t work, but boots up correctly….?

This isn’t entirely true.. You probably have an old bottrom iPhone which allows you to boot into iOS and run legit apps in safe mode.. Or this is what I’ve experienced. I’m back on iOS 4.1 and for now, until 4.2.1 issues are worked out, is way more stable

I jailbroke 4.2.1 on 3g with redsnow b5 only hitch is that installous doesn’t install the apps after downloading. I had to download apps from torrent sites and install .ipa’s through iTunes that worked perfect. Does NOT loose jailbreak after reboot or powerloss. Hopefully all I need is an update from installous

The major reason to upgrade to 4.2 is airplay compatability. The “tethered” thing only means that if you resart the phone, your jailbroken apps will not work. However the phone still works fine. It doesn’t wipe your phone clean. Once you do a tethered startup, everything works fine.

Isn’t 4.2 slowing down the iPhone? I know I had 4.1 and it was a pain mainly on the battery it only lasts like 6hrs and the reaction to comands such as going into settings it’s much slower than in the one I have now 3.1.3 . True that sum apps from apple store r not compatible but for now it’s ok. As for tethering on 4.1 it was in the menu , dunno about 4.2 though .

Been out fir some time. Redsnow then using Cydia use snowbreeze to unlock. Don’t update 3G to 4.2 though. Hangs on iTunes logo and no amount of Redsnow reboot tetheringmagic will work. took me a day to get it back to 4.1. I wanted 4.2 for the new SMS sender tones like tonemaker does but for incomming calls but not text.

Well I some how had evil iTunes auto update my phone so I was stuck with 4.2.1 iOS it’s all great besides the tethering and cydia loads so much faster now on my 3GS new bootrom since the update from 4.1 to 4.2.1. :-)

I just upgraded from 4.0 to 4.1 on my iPhone 4 and am extremely glad I did. Allows for some AppStore installs that required 4.1, but (more importantly) it eliminated the sensitivity issue when holding my phone on my shoulder while talking. No more accidental FaceTime attempts during a conversation!!!

it the .IPSW file does not appear to ipdate it manually through iTunes. Where can I download it and how can I unlock it then???

I recently tried to update to 4.1 on my 3G but only ended up bridling phone. So I updated to 4.2.1 and jailbroke. Everythings fine and a little faster, the only problem is activator doesn’t work.

Does anyone know if there will be an activator update soon?

I think Apple outsmarted Saurik for iPhone restore. I have an iPhone 4.2.1 with iTunes 10.1.1.4 and when I tried to restore using Saurik’s server, iTunes would report Error 1013 and abort the restore. After reading much on the topic, the ONLY way to resolve the Error 1013 is to remove all “gs.apple.com” entries from the HOSTS file.

Once I did that, iTunes happily restored the iPhone with 4.2.1.

I don’t think I messed up with Saurik’s restore (as I’ve done this many times). This is definitely a very sad day for all jailbreakers.

Be careful what you do on your phone, as a restore will mean an automatic upgrade to the latest iOS available.

If anyone has a different experience, please do share with the rest of us.

I got my new iPad with 4.2.1 and thus, had to use redsn0w to JB. Worked fine, but as it is tethered JB, I have a problem:
When an app requires rebooting, my iPad just hangs at the Apple prompt!
-Is there any chance to boot it w/o needing an extra notebook & redsnow? I mean, yes, it is tethered, but It would suffice if it boots up w/o Cydia then if I am uproar and just won’t have a seperate PC along when all I want to do is email.. :-(

Yea, you’re screwed. I upgraded my 3G to 4.2.1 and anytime I pressed the volume buttons or had alot going on while sbsettings was installed, my springboard would crash. I went back to 4.1

hello, I have bought Orange Iphone 4 from UK, OS 4.0.1 and after doing all, the Cydia is not installing. I tried to install cydia manually using Iphone Explorer. But it not works. Limerain jailbreakes the phones, but not installs the Cydia. So I cant use my new sim card. Seems my Iphone is not activated. I did jailbreak on my first Iphone4 some time before, and that was successful, but now I doing same thing on my second Iphone but it not works.

My ipod 4G had a blow out lastnight on fw 4.1 unfortunately I could not power up until I restored and low and behold had to update to 4.2.1 what a nightmare. I have jailbroken tethered though and sbsettings, my favourite part of the jailbreak nolonger loads:( not a happy bunny. I cannot wait for the unteathered hook as this rebooting and rejailbreaking is really annoying!!!!!!!!!!!! Do yourself a favour and listen to the above.
