Note: the warning applies only to 3gs, ipod touch 2 and 3 users. Regular 3g, 2g, and ipod touch 1 users can use redsn0w 0.9 to jailbreak 3.1.3.
iPhone OS 3.1.3 is now out from Apple. Supposedly it fixes some battery issues. (Doesn’t every release make things faster and fix battery problems?) There are no new features. The release only stops jailbreaks. That’s right. No new features.
DO NOT UPDATE YOU WILL BE SORRY.
Currently there is no jailbreak for this firmware. Unofficial sources have confirmed that they have patched up the method we used to jailbreak 3.1.2 so you will not be able to jailbreak. If you update you will lose all your jailbreak apps and will not be able to get them back. In other words, updating means you lose a lot of stuff in return for almost nothing back. In addition, there is no ETA on a jailbreak for 3.1.3. It may never be jailbroken. It is likely that they (dev team, geohot) will not waste another hole on 3.1.3. They will most likely hold it for the bigger update that will come with the release of the iPad and iPhone 4.0.
One more thing, as of right now, Apple is still signing 3.1.2 for you 3gs users but no one knows for how much longer they will be. Make sure you *rush* into Cydia or Rock and get your keys signed on the front page if you have not. This will make certain you can always restore 3.1.2 even in the future using Saurik’s server.
To summarize:
- Update adds NO NEW FEATURES, do not update.
- Update kills your jailbreak. Do not update.
- Get your 3gs 3.1.2 keys signed by Cydia/Rock now if you haven’t.
Read dev team info about this update here.

February 2nd, 2010 at 4:48 pm
Keys Signed?? How do I know/do that??? Please help
February 2nd, 2010 at 4:49 pm
I’m also curious about “key signing”. Any useful info will be greatly appreciated! $-} I just jailbroke my iPhone 3g (3.1.2)and I love all the cool new stuff I can do. DEFINATLY DON’T WANT TO LOSE ANY NEW APPS! I turned off auto update in iTunes but I need key signing info. How do I make sure my keys are signed???
February 2nd, 2010 at 4:58 pm
please let us all know how to make sure our keys are signed with cyida …..
February 2nd, 2010 at 5:22 pm
Yes, I’m new to jailbreaking and I have no idea what the key signing thing is. Please somebody reply that knows what that means! Thks
February 2nd, 2010 at 5:34 pm
Wait does the “key signing” apply to iPod Touch users? And what is key signing by the way.
February 2nd, 2010 at 6:10 pm
the link from other document, its look like only for 3GS, but need to confirm by some one
February 2nd, 2010 at 6:40 pm
I think this is what key signing means, but I’m not exactly sure. Here is the original article http://www.saurik.com/id/12#howto, but I don’t know if you can back up 3.1.2 like this. I also have an iPod Touch jailbroken running 3.1.2 but I need other people to back me up on this.
February 2nd, 2010 at 6:52 pm
I didn’t exactly see the announcement in time. I was putting the new stuff on and at the end I decided to check BigBoss’s blog for new posts when I saw it. My keys were not signed.
So, anyways, i have a backup of all my jailbreak apps (plus their all free), and I don’t think I can wait for another jailbreak.
PLEASE CAN YOU GIVE ME A LINK TO THE 3.1.0 FIRMWARE. I TRIES EVERYTHING TO GET IT BUT ITUNES KEEPS SAYING IT IS NOT VALID FOR MY IPOD!
February 2nd, 2010 at 7:10 pm
Same question, “getting your keys signed”, can someone explain?
Thank you guys.
February 2nd, 2010 at 7:26 pm
alright I got this all straightened out FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE STILL JAILBROKEN. Go into Cyida and if it says at the top BELOW welcome “This device has SHSHs on file for iPhone OS: 3.1.2″ you have NOTHING to worry about. I would just ignore many old posts about it since it looks safe that Cydia says that.
Eric, I guess that you are not jailbroken at the moment, and since you don’t have your SHSHs on file, sorry you’ll have to go a month until the iPad is released and hopefully 4.0 which probably will have a jailbreak up and running very fast (Thanks to Saurik and Geohot). However if you jailbroke 3.1.2 check my link above and follow its instructions as if you already have the SHSHs on file (I’m not sure if this comes with blackra1n jailbreak 3.1.2 or not) so try that. If that fails check out the comments on this page http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/365988515/reviving-redsn0w. Yesterday (Feb. 1) as you see above here resn0w works on 3.1.2 and I didn’t read through all the comments but it seems like someone used it to jailbreak 3.1.3.
and to everyone else DONT PANIC AND DO NOT UPGRADE/ UPDATE. APPLE IS JUST TRYING TO GET RID OF YOUR JAILBREAK OPTION, THERE ARE NO OTHER FEATURES.
February 2nd, 2010 at 7:34 pm
read trough the comments, if u have a 2g running 3.1.3 it will work, not sure about 3g
February 2nd, 2010 at 8:26 pm
Odd, my first comment didn’t go through. Ok I’ll basically repeat it, Eric the reason it won’t work and will never work for you since you don’t have your keys backed up is this, b4 u can restore iTunes has to verify with apple, (DFU mode or not). This is done by sending out a pin of some sort yatta yatta yatta, read about that here http://www.macdotnub.co.cc/articles/content/iTunesVerification.pdf and here http://www.saurik.com/id/12#howto
also read the dev teams blog (just google iPhone dev team real quick) the fastest way to check if your keys are on Cydia (not sure if it comes with blackra1n jailbreak) is to open up Cydia and if it says below welcome “This device currently has SHSHs on file for firmware: 3.1.2.” or something like that ur fine. Also Eric, if u have a early second gen model the updated redsn0w will work for you

1) I’ve found some helpful info regarding the “signing of keys” . Head over to
For easy to follow instructions:
http://iphonecustoms.com/?page_id=404
and
For more detail:
http://www.saurik.com/id/12#howto
Again, I’m a noob and came to know about this a few hours ago. So do your research before doing anything.
2) From the following will be helpful:
Why i need ECID SHSH Dump : Apple added a new piece of security called ECID, The nature of the 3GS hardware allows Apple to stop IPSWs from being usable unless you’ve already gotten the signed chunks they send to you based on your ECID (a unique chip ID). Actually Apple applies ECID so the iPhone will refuse to accept the ipsw file while downgrading because of a bad signature.

UPDATE to my previous post:
Here is a super simple way of doing this:
http://butyoureagirl.com/2009/09/20/cydia-offers-to-store-jailbreak-files-for-future-iphone-freedom/
February 2nd, 2010 at 11:09 pm
2G you can update and you can jailbreak and unlock.
3G you can update and jailbreak but you can not unlock, so be very careful.
3GS DO NOT UPDATE!!
Bigboss have bunch of firmware stored on their server, you can try and do a search… But if I know Apple if you upgraded to 3.1.3 already you are out of luck, will not be able to “downgrade”.

@pranav,
Thanks for the plug.
I’ve tweeted this out in hopes folks don’t try to update.
I just did a live show on jailbreaking with the iPhone Dev Team’s Pwnage Tool version 3.1.4 for iPhone firmware 3.1.2.
Be patient for version 4.0.
I will do another live jailbreak show when the new version is jailbroke by the developers at @iphone_dev.
Stay free with jailbreaking!

Are there any hints of a Un-Teathered jailbreak for the Ipod Touch 3G yet.
Kev…..
February 3rd, 2010 at 8:45 am
Nope, sorry redsn0w doesn’t cover that
February 3rd, 2010 at 9:42 am
Kinda hard to jailbreak something that doesn’t even F’ing exist !!
Hello? Brain check.
February 3rd, 2010 at 10:46 am
Well I messed up accidently upgraded to 3.1.3 and have boot loader 5.9 and baseband of 5.12. I was able to Jailbreak my 3G but when I unlocked it it just searches for a carrier and when you go to carriers says it cannot load carrier list. So I pretty much hosed myself… I hope that there will be an unlock solution soon.
February 3rd, 2010 at 12:06 pm
Hey sweeet, how did you jailbreak back to 3.1.2? I keep getting an error 1015 when trying to restore the old Ipsw package. The bait/switch doesn’t seem to work with Itunes on my 3G. Some have stated Redsn0w may help in that respect. I was accidently moving some folders to free up space, and then could not restore back. We should all class action sue Apple for stopping progress.
February 3rd, 2010 at 12:24 pm
Just ran Redsn0w and used the 3g IPSW that was painless everything just cannot unlock it.
February 3rd, 2010 at 12:34 pm
Thanks, I will try it. Is Redsn0w windows compatible?
February 3rd, 2010 at 2:27 pm
My phone stuffed up last night and just wouldnt boot, Itunes 9 only gives the option to restore 3.1.3 now and not 3.1.2!!!! I have tried with the ipsw file and get error: The iphone could not be restored, this device isnt eligible for the requested build. and if i try a custom firmware, it says it isnt supported:
NOW WAT THE HELL DO I DO!?!?!?!?
February 3rd, 2010 at 2:40 pm
so wat if ive accidentally install 3.1.3?? is thr ani miracle to downgrade bck to 3.1.2 bck???
February 3rd, 2010 at 3:42 pm
im dead i have had my jailbreak for like 7months but then it mad my speaker a bit funny so i restored it(by the way my speakers good now)anyway butt u know if there is a new sofware when you restore you haft to update it so i did before i read this stuff! and then i tryed to jailbreak it and it just turns black screen no!!!! i hope they find another jailbreak for 3.1.3 crossed fingers
February 3rd, 2010 at 3:57 pm
I havent even upgraded to 3.1.3 yet, my jailbreak of 3.1.2 just freezes on the blackra1n loading screen and does nothing. in the past, the only way to rectify it was to restore the settings which unfortunateley, meant rejailbreaking and installingthe apps. Is there another way to get a failed jailbreak working again without restoring the whole os?
February 3rd, 2010 at 5:32 pm
same problem llol
February 3rd, 2010 at 5:48 pm
is there any way i can restore iphone 3gs from 3.1.3 firmware to 3.1.2 ?

February 3rd, 2010 at 7:28 pm

http://www.ihackintosh.com/2010/02/downgrade-iphone-3gs-os-3-1-3-to-3-1-2-with-cydia-shsh/
problem solved, but ONLY IF YOU HAD YOUR SHSH backed up on Cydia. Gonna try this when im home :)
February 3rd, 2010 at 11:38 pm
i still cant figure out how to sign the keys in cydia
February 3rd, 2010 at 11:51 pm

February 4th, 2010 at 7:32 am
twat
February 4th, 2010 at 8:01 am
Make sure you *rush* into Cydia or Rock and get your keys signed <- what does it mean? could anyone explain me?
February 4th, 2010 at 12:48 pm
Okay, I used blackra1n to jailbreak in 3.1.2, and don’t see the “This device currently has SHSHs on file for firmware: 3.1.2.” message in Cydia.
I just want to sync my iTunes, because I haven’t done so since jailbreaking – I understand that the new update will disable my jailbreak, and have no intentions of upgrading – but I’m still not clear on what this key-signing is about…
I’ve read through these comments a number of times, but it’s still unclear…
February 4th, 2010 at 4:49 pm
I updated to 3.1.3 before reading anything online yesterday which in turn killed my jailbreak of course. I was lucky enough to still be under the return policy and new the store still had 3.1.2 firmware. My question is this, I updated my old phone to 3.1.3 firmware in itunes, ok I took that phone back got a new one, re jailbroke it. Now I want to know, am I safe to use itunes for syncing or is it going to sync 3.1.3 firmware rite back on the phone? Any help appreciated cuz I can’t take back another phone already…
February 4th, 2010 at 8:49 pm
Okay how do i get my keys-signed…..please help i don’t understand t…
I have 3.1 fw on my 3gs, now how can i upgrade to 3.1.2 by avoiding the 3.1.3???
If i restore with the automatic update on itenes turned off will that automatically upgrade to 3.1.3????
February 5th, 2010 at 12:34 am
ok here it is, I just got this figured out and luckily, i had signed my keys through cydia. If you havent signed them and HAVE NOT YET upgraded to 3.1.2 do this:
SIGNING
-download USBVIEW
-put phone in DFU recovery mode
-in options, tick config descriptors
-press f5 to refresh, scroll down to apple iboot (or whatever is written next to it) and look for ECID. Write down the ECID.
Thats it.
February 5th, 2010 at 2:12 am
Can I still sync stuff with itunes without losing my jailbreak or be forced to update to 3.1.3?
February 5th, 2010 at 3:36 pm
u have always been given the option to upgrade firmware.
Also, I had 3.1.2 keys signed by cydia. Tried to roll back my firmware with the keys, changed my host file etc. Doesnt work. I also tried setting up my own host using tinytss. Goes through the restore process but then I get an error in the end. Apparently you are supposed to do it twice because of NAND but It still doesnt fully restore.
wtf?!
February 5th, 2010 at 6:18 pm
Hey can u help me with that please? Trying to upgrade to 3.1.2 but not 3.1.3. What do u mean by write down the ECID? Please email me if anyone can help me please. I’m using iPhone 3gs 3.1 right now. Email me at

Damn I updated my iPod touch this morning and just found this -_-
February 6th, 2010 at 6:04 pm
I downloaded the compressed 3.1.2 firmware file for the 2G. The files were extracted and saved. When I tried to use RedSn0w there was nothing in those files recognizable as 3.1.2 firmware. Is there a special way to unzip these files? I opened every folder. There were no files *.ipsw. There is a firmware folder containing the folders”all_flash and dfu. Where do I direct RedSn0w? This phone came to me with unlocked 3.1.2. My husband updated to 3.1.3 via iTunes. There is no ATT service where I live so must have an unlocked phone. I understand how RedSn0w works. I just need to know how to feed it the 3.1.2 it needs. Please help. Thank you. I am a PC user Windows XP.

You can downgrade back to 3.1.2 follow instructions from this guy when you get that 1050 error after it’s done run blackra1n it will clear past that screen and also unlock your freshly restored phone. It works!
February 6th, 2010 at 10:31 pm
Sorry to ask what does it mean by ” having 3.1.2 key signed on cydia”? How are we supposed to do it?
Thanks alot

February 7th, 2010 at 9:43 pm
I just did a jailbreak and unlock (blackrain) so I can use my iPhone 3G in New Zealand (I have U.S. AT&T). It was working ok for a couple of days but today, after turning my iPhone off, it wouldn’t turn back on again, getting stuck at the apple logo.
I searched and found how I can do a restore through iTunes but iTunes wants to restore and UPDATE! I’m concerned that it would upgrade my 3.1.2 to 3.1.3 so I’m hesitant to press OK.
Would anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Hi, I was happily using 16 GB 3GS on 3.1.2 jailbroken and unlocked. Last week I exchanged my iphone and bought a brand new jailbroken and unlocked iphone 3gs 32 GB as I wanted more memory. As soon as I rebooted, it went to USB mode. I took it back to the dealer, then I came to know that is is a tethered iphone as it is recently manufactured. After going through Now I am stuck with it as I cant use cydia or put it off for the night. Pls help is there any way I can use my iphone like before as I had purchased many applications from Cydia and itunes. Big boss pls recommend a way out for me.
Thank you

February 9th, 2010 at 9:52 am
I’ve Jailbroken/inlocked my iPhone 2g with the new 3.1.3 firmware using RedSn0w.
Has anyone else successfully done this and been able to get MMS working on T-Mobile? What did you use? The orignal ActiveMMS2G that used to be on Cydia, I can no longer find. There is a package called “Native MMS iPhone 2g” from the http://cydia.ifoneguide.n repository, that sounds like it worked with the 3.1.2 firmware however, when I apply it and reboot my phone says “searching” where the carrier signal indicator is located and never locates the network unless I un-apply the “Native MMS iPhone 2g” package.
If anyone has MMS working on a jailbroken 2g using the 3.1.3 firmware, preferably on T-Mobile, please share the details on how you got this working. Thanks!
February 9th, 2010 at 4:33 pm
pkgbackup is not working for me on fw 3.1.3 when its restoring it freezes with the spinning wheel frozen to.
anyone having this problem or have a solution??
February 9th, 2010 at 5:03 pm
I had this problem after I upgraded to 3.1.3, performed my data restore and ran AptBackup… which sounds like an application that performs a similar function.
I ended up having to run through the restore process a second time and just figured I’d install all my non-App Store 3rd party apps manually, which for me, isn’t too extensive.
February 9th, 2010 at 8:27 pm
i’m new to all of this and my phone is already updated to the 3.1.3 software is there a way to go backwards so i can jail break my phone and my wifes.
