Geohot’s Blackra1n RC3 now includes blacksn0w unlock. Good job Geohot on figuring out how to unlock the 3.1.2 baseband so fast! I have updated the blackra1n guide to include instructions on the unlock. Instructions are quite simple though. Just install the sn0w option when installing cydia or rock. Also, thankfully, Geohot has removed the buggy Icy from the RC3 build.

I just restored my pwnaged 3GS to 3.1.2 in order to jailbreak with blackra1n and then unlock. But I noticed that instructions for the pwnage world will be posted later on GeoHot’s blog. Do I continue with the blackra1n jailbreaking and the unlock or should I wait for his instructions? You did not psot any warning for the pwnaged 3GS.

Question: I am a bit confused here. I have 04.26.08 Baseband FW 3.0 3G iphone jailbroken and unlocked (using ultrasn0w). In order to jailbreak and ulock I need to be on latest 3.1.2 firmware, 05.11.07 baseband… it means I should connect to iTunes and update my iPhone to 3.1.2 and get the official upgrade (which will lock my phone), or should I use custom FW? Please help!

I’ve got a 3gs with 3.0 and it is working fine… However, Apple just came out with a new agreement you have to sign to update apps on iTunes if you have any apps on your phone that won’t work with 3.0 and only with 3.1.2. Then iTunes removes all apps that don’t work with just 3.0 and that need the update.
Before that I was content with just using the old versions of the apps since it could not install the updated versions. It’s just another inconvenience from Apple to make Jailbroken phones more trouble to use in my opinion. Fortunately, I didn’t use those apps much… But, I’m afraid that if I do go through the time and trouble to update to 3.1.2 and then add all the Cydia apps again, then Apple will come out with 3.1.3, 3.1.4, 3.1.5, etc. periodically to make more inconveniences for Jailbreak users…
I don’t look forward to updating, jailbreaking, reinstalling and restoring pics, albums, apps, etc. To think that we might have to do it often now just to stay a step ahead of Apple in order to use Appstore apps bothers me.
Otherwise, I would agree with the comment above that 3.0 is good and not to update, but as more apps are “swiped” off my iPhone because of incompatibility with 3.1.2, it will only be a matter of time before it is an app that “I can’t live without” that forces me to update…
Any other victims or thoughts on this??

Chris. I had the same issue with wifi after the unlock. I did what Jaylou suggested, reset the network, and its working fine now.
I did have to recover from tether using blackra1n again.

Had the same WiFi issues. Easy to resolve, just use reset network settings. Every time you shut the phone down you have to do this (no clue why though because it boots from the previous settings I assume). Anyway I hacked my 3GS on Nov 4th and still no serious issues.. Excellent job from this young guy!

Hi guys. I was using 8gb 3g iphone, 3.0.1, with Fw 4.26, bb-5.09. Few months back I had successfully jailbroken from 2.2 with redsn0w 0.8 and unlocked with ultrasn0w 9.1. I had issues with ultrasnow as there was NO SERVICE issue. So I removed ultrasnow 9.1 and installed ultrasnow8 by Rizwan. It worked only on vodafone network. After going throug this blog yesterday I updated in itunes ( 9.01 )to 3.1.2. After updating I got the warning of sim not recognised. I followed the steps as mentioned and jailbroke with geohots Blackra1n RC3. All went fine except the same issue of NO SERVICE even with vodafone which was working first. Even Cydia is not working as soon as i open it, it comes out. With Blackra1n, I installed again cydia and snow but no luck. Kind help and suggestions please. Thank you

I’m on 3G with OS 3.1. Last night I downloaded a free game from the App Store. I had to accept the new agreement. But afterwards, it would not let me enter my password to complete the download. Basiacally, the keyboard would not react at all. The only way was to copy/paste the password from notes app into the field.
I don’t know if any of this is related but it could mean that Apple is trying to make us all update to the newest OS… It did not remove any of the older apps as reported above. Maybe because they were put into a folder (Categories)?

I was given a 3Gs 3.1 out of the box iphone with 05.11.07 modem firmware. Was grateful for the blackra1n RC3 to jailbreak and unlock my phone (I live outside the US). First few syncs through iTunes for calendar, etc went as before. Now I have a message saying my SIM card is not supported so am not allowed to sync. Any thoughts?
I replaced the SIM that came with the phone and was able to sync and will switch SIMs for use. Big hassle for sure. Can’t fins any other forum that discusses this particular issue.

In the 3Gs jailbreak guide it says:
“Unfortunately, the ipod 3 and any iphone 3gs after week 41 is tethered which means if you reboot you have to run blackra1n again. (Note for iphone 3gs owners, check your week by looking at the 4 and 5th digits of your serial number).”
I just checked mine and it is the 43rd week.
So what exactly does this mean? After using Blackrain/blacksnow and then restarting, do we have to repeat the ENTIRE process? Or just rerun the jailbreak and all the changes stay saved?

cydia shows ultrasn0w installed.
The problem is, I can only make call using vodaphone. I can receive call if I use Airtel, IDEA or any other sim but I cannot call make call with these carrier.

Any body using Blacksn0w will have WIFI problem so just remove Blacksn0w and WIFI will never let you down no matter how many time you restart your iphone 3GS – 3.1.2 – Geohot will not listen to anybody

recently i accidentally updated my iphone 3G from firmware 2.2 to 3.1.2 ( i dont remember what baseband it was on). however once updated to the latest firmware from itunes i thought i could use Blackrain to unlock and jailbreak. but when i run Blackrain it does what ever it says its supposed to do, but my phone is still locked.it still got the picture of the cable and itunes on it and it says NO SIM CARD INSTALLED.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Geohot has released blackra1n. This is a 3.1.2 jailbreak for all devices: iphone 2g, iphone 3g, iphone 3gs, ipodtouch 1, 2, 3 (note: ipod touch 3 8gb users say this isnt working). It’s pretty easy. You just load the app and click the “make it ra1n” button and follow the prompts. ***Unfortunately, the ipod 3 and any iphone 3gs after week 41 is tethered which means if you reboot you have to run blackra1n again***. (Note for iphone 3gs owners, check your week by looking at the 4 and 5th digits of your serial number).

Tried to Jailbreak 3GS with Blackrain RC3 and was successful but when i download SB settings and others like winterboard in goes into the DFU mode and i will need to “make it rain again” to go working again. The instruction needs to be updated.
Update phone per instructed in the guide, download blackra1n from blackra1n.com. Run blackra1n (with ituneshelp shut off) on computer, iphone reboot then run blackra1n in iPhone.
Sn0w is now not within blackra1n to install, you can only install Cydia or Rockapps.
One must install Cydia, then go into Cydia to add blackra1n.com repo
Once reloaded install blacksn0w to unlock and activate the phone.

I would put phone in DFU mode, update phone with 3.1.2
Download blackra1n RC3 from blackra1n.com
Connect iPhone to computer, go into your Task Manager (control + alt + delete) go to processes and stop itunehelp process. Run blackra1n on your xp computer, watch your screen it will change when process is running. After your phone finish jailbreak and reboot your phone is jailbroken, now you need to run blackra1n within your phone that was installed during jailbreaking process. Choose to install Cydia and/or Rock (I would go with just Cydia).
After Cydia is installed, leave your phone in airplane mode but turn on the Wifi. Start Cydia and let it update. After update go to Manage and add blackra1n.com repo, after Cydia is done adding repo look for blacksn0w and install that. After it is done installing shut down iPhone, put in the sim card you want and restart iPhone. Your device should be jailbroken + unlocked + activated, just turn off the airplane mode and you are set.
This is what I did with my iPhone and worked, problem is sound is all weird… Will probably try to run this process again when I get home.

Hey, For the last 3 days I’ve been trying to jailbreak my brand new ipod touch 3g 32gb that i bought on dec, 27. The model is MC008LL and it was made on the 48th week so OS3.1.2 came installed. First i tried using my dell laptop with vista (basic) and i followed all the different instructions out there, for blackra1n, religiously but my ipod keeps getting stuck in dfu mode when blackra1n says “entering recovery mode” and nothing more happens. yes the compatibility is set to XP and no itunes related programs are running. Then I tried doing it on my desktop with windows XP (Professional) but here the ipod gets stuck at a blank black screen when the blackra1n program says “done, wait for reboot” and the guys face never showed up either. Once though after a couple of times the guys face did show up and i got excited thinking it finally worked but when it rebooted it got stuck at the black screen again..i kept trying again and again but that never happened again it just keeps getting stuck at the black screen…I’m frustrated and starting to think maybe my ipod is just too new and i gotta wait for a new jb program. So can someone please respond to my situation..even if you don’t know, respond by saying something like “sorry, I don’t know” so i can atleast know you read this. Thank you.

I have a jail broken and unlocked 3G, firmware 3.1.2(7D11), 5.11.07.
Due to the problem I describe below I believe my only option is to restore and then try to jailbreak and unlock again. I don’t have an image to restore from and I want to make sure I don’t accidentally restore to some version that won’t work. Can anyone point me to a safe file to restore from?
My root problem:
Cydia crashes due to a known problem with corrupt files. I don’t have openssh installed to fix the problem. I also don’t have mobileterminal, ifile or any other local app to fix the problem. Finally external file manager apps(Ifuntastic, etc) won’t work because I don’t have afc2add. Basically a big chicken and egg problem.
