This is a general warning to all your MAC owners. The OSX update to 10.5.6 disables DFU mode in the USB drivers. It works the same way that it works on the new Macbook Airs. You cannot pwn or quickpwn without DFU mode and in many cases DFU mode saves you from restore issues in general. Rumor is that you can still restore or use DFU mode if you hook up to a USB hub rather than directly connect to the MAC. I suggest that you avoid updating to 10.5.6 until the dev team can work out a solution to this issue. Otherwise, you may have issues trying to get recognized during the DFU stages of pwnage and quickpwn.

hey bigboss, i got a question to you or anyone that can answer me, i have a 3g 8gb iphone that i updated to 2.2 fw version, is there any way to downgraded it to 2.1 fw version ?
December 16th, 2008 at 7:27 am
Why would you want to? I dont believe there is any good reason to do that. Anyways, no, a downgrade on a 3g probably is not possible.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:37 am
because i`d like to use the 3g with a turbo sim here in my country “dominican republic” and i have been told that turbo sim will only work with fw 2.1 version

buy this one works on 2.2

If you saved the 2.1 ipsw file you can put your phone in DFU mode and use itunes restore function to downgrade. I had to do this once when I screwed up the 2.2 pwnage, worked fine.

I dont think the firmware is the issue. Its probably your modem firmware/baseband, which has probably already been upgraded. Did you upgrade normally or via pwnage tool? At this point you cannot downgrade baseband.
December 16th, 2008 at 7:48 pm
Right. It’s the baseband that was updated to 2.2′s baseband, not the firmware. You cannot downgrade it once it’s upgraded. So moving to 2.1 will not help you.

DAMN! already upgraded….what a dope I am…can anyone tell me if I can ‘restore/revert’ back to 10.5.4 if I have a time machine back up on an external hard drive?

I can understand the problem with the latest update.. So ppl can Install Windows just to install new firmware on iPhone.

@Handsfull
- First of all, among versions 10.5.4 and 10.5.6, you missed 10.5.5
- Also, there is no proper ‘downgrade’ solution for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. You HAVE to re-install the OS and upgrade ‘manually’ to the version you want.
- Furthermore, you can still jailbreak your phone by either doing a restore or using that quick pwn tool.
- 10.5.6 simply breaks a special ‘recovery’ mode that is not required in order to jailbreak your phone, some people just use it because they’re tech heads that want more control. You don’t need to use this mode in order to jailbreak your iPhone.
- Finally, two fixes are available if you so wish to enter this recovery mode.:
–>The ‘Quick Way’:
Use a USB hub rather than your in-built USB port.
–>For the ‘advanced’ users:
Replace the IOUSBFamily.kext with one from 10.5.5 and it will fix your problems. Detailed guide can be found at the Dev-Team Blog (http://blog.iphone-dev.org/).
The kexts can be found/ extracted from Apple’s official 10.5.5 update (http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_5_Update)

Okay, just for shits and giggles, I updated to 10.5.6 and restored. I figured it would only be a matter of time, anyway. Anyhow, I was actually able to both restore my iPhone AND use QuickPWN without any problems (using just my iMac and no attachments). Is there something I’m not aware of, or was I one of the lucky ones. Note: I DO have a USB hub just in case . . . AND I also have a laptop running Wndows XP.
December 17th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
This would have to be just a bug since DFU mode isnt necessarly only used to jailbreak. I always use DFU to restore to jailbroken then pwn.

This information is partially wrong. The special “recovery” mode is not just for tech heads that want to feel cool. It is a required step for both pwnage and quickpwn. If you cant get the machine to work with your device in DFU mode, you cannot proceed. See step #11 of my pwnage guide or step #4 on my quickpwn guide for OSX. These steps are not optional.

Perhaps I meant gizmodo? yeahhh

Ohhh and guys! To get into DFU mode and bypass all that new macbook crap:
Just connect your phone up through a USB hub. My friend and I did this with his phone just last week and can verify that it works.

ok a USB hub may work but what if u plug into the mac keyboard USB port that might wrk

you can’t just create a partition and reformat it your only choice.

Hello everyone,
This is really silly. But connect your iPhone to your MAC using a USB hub. I did it by connecting it to the USB out of my Apple monitor. And it just works.
Good Luck!

i don’t think that is recommended, i tried the crack, and when i restarted the machine, i cound even move my mouse, or keyboard, or anything even external mouses, but it works in windows, so don’t do it! i had to do a archive and install, and it took FOREVER!!!

You made some good points there. I did a search on the topic and found most people will agree with your blog.
