As a point of interest, the iPhone dev team has released redsn0w v0.9b3 which handles 3.1.2. For the most part, if you are already jailbroken with blackra1n and everything is working ok, no need to use redsn0w. If you need to jailbreak and dont want to use blackra1n for some reason, you can use redsn0w as an alternative. Redsn0w also has options to change boot logos. The redsn0w page has more details as well as download links at the bottom for both MAC and Windows users.
Note: if you have a 3GS newer than week 40 of last year then you still have a tethered jailbreak. That means if you ever reboot, you have to rerun blackra1n (or redsn0w). You don’t have to restore. Try not to reboot if you have these devices.

Any idea if the Dev Team or anyone out there is working on making a non-tethered jailbreak for these brand new 3GSs? Thanks.

@iamse7en: I would seriously like to know that as well…

My guess would be that they’re gonna wait until 4.0 comes out before releasing anything else new.

I used Blackra1n from Geohot a couple of times. Both went very easy but the feeling of its usage is’nt nearly as comfy as Redsn0w. That’s why i’m very happy Idev-Team gave us their version of the tool. Therefore i will use this one as fast as possible to give my 3g a boost in the right direction again.

Does anyone know how to tell if you got iPhone that is week 40 or newer?
January 22nd, 2010 at 9:33 pm
Woohoo!! Found the answer in BigBoss of course :)
Here it is how you can tell:
You can determine your week based on your serial number in settings, general, about. Look the 3rd, 4th, and 5th digits. If it is larger than 940 you will have a tethered jailbreak only.
I got the good one :D Thank god!!

2G’s are always unlockable. Bootneuter will take care of that for you no matter what future or past firmware you use. The Dev Team has said this repeatedly.

The iphone dev team makes redsn0w and pwnagetool.

Today I received my replacement iphone 3G and unfortunately it already contains baseband 05.11 (My old iphone 3G was jail broken with a baseband of 04.26 when I made my last backup in itunes on my Macbook) From what I’ve been reading it appears now that I’ve lost my ability to tether my iphone with AT&T. So I have three questions:
1. Should I use Pwnage 3.1.4 or Redsn0w 0.9 beta to jail break my new iphone 3G?
2. When making my last backup I forgot to run aptbackup. Will I still be able to recover my Cydia apps after the jail break?
3. Do I restore my itunes backup befor jail breaking or after jail breaking?
TIA
January 23rd, 2010 at 7:40 pm
1. Either. Or blackra1n.
2. No.
3. Either, but be sure to do it after if you use PwnageTool: it will be wiped while jailbreaking.

Can anyone help. I had a jailbroken 3.0 iphone 3GS. I ran redsnow. Everything seemed to work however i don’t have a cydia icon on my springboard and although all my jailbroken apps have been installed, i can’t run any of them. When i click an app it starts to load and just quits. I’ve tried rerunning 3 times. Any help thanks

I have a week 41 jaIlbroken 3GS…so not ALL phones after week 40 have a tethered jailbreak.
January 24th, 2010 at 9:26 pm
My iPhone 3G is version 3.1.2 and that is the firmware I downloaded, b/c it matched. When I tried selecting it using redsn0w it said the IPSW wasn’t identified. The guide references firmware 3.0. I downloaded that and then everything started working. Does it mater that my phone is 3.1.2 and I’m using the firmware 3.0 for this jailbreak?

Hi guys !
1.) Does anybody know if the wifi / network reset problem is solved with redsn0w 0.9 beta 3 ?
2.) If yes – how exactly should I apply redsn0w 0.9 beta 3 to get rid of my wifi problem ?
Thx very much !

How do I do a “tethered reboot” on a new iphone.
From the old videos looks like I need to restore and am SOL until then.
January 27th, 2010 at 11:18 am
Does this require the latest iTunes version?
January 27th, 2010 at 8:13 pm
I have restored my 3GS with FW 3.1.2 twice and jb’d using Redsn0w 0.9beta3. It appears to work but after the phone finishes I do not have an icon for Cydia. Followed the steps exactly. Using Win7 x64. What am I doing wrong?
January 29th, 2010 at 9:58 am
So it looks like I have a 3GS from BEFORE week 40. (serial reads 938)
But like an idiot, I upgraded my firmware to 3.1.2, which put my baseband at 05.11.07.
Does this mean I now have a tethered device, and would have to do a tethered reboot each time?
January 29th, 2010 at 2:10 pm
Not strictly true. My 945 serial 3GS is untethered as a reboot after loading openSSH did not require anything to be done.
January 29th, 2010 at 2:13 pm
My 3GS is 945. I did the J/B with blackra1n and it is untethered since a reboot after loading openSSH did not require running blackra1n again. FW is 3.1.2 and baseband is 05.11.07.

Hi i was wondering is it possible to only add cydia without JB? my iPhone is SimFree, and doesn’t need unlocking, but i wonder if its possible to add just cydia without the fuss of JB or Tethered JB its 3GS with new boot..
unless i’m missing the point that cydia is the whole JB issue here?
thanks for helping!
