Interestingly enough, within one day apart from each other, two developers have released a tethering toggle for SBSettings. Yesterday “Tethering” toggle was released by Filipe Pina. Today, rpetrich released a VPN and Tethering toggle caleld “Tether”. Both tethering toggles work well although they both take a different approach on how to make the actual changes. Rpetrich’s toggle uses the preferences frameworks and calls the functions that the settings app calls. Filipe Pina’s version makes the changes to the files that the preferences framework makes and then restarts the internet service. In both case, you can tether with usb or bluetooth. If you want to tether with bluetooth, you must enable bluetooth in sbsettings separately.
Rpetrich released also a VPN toggle. I believe these two toggles were the most requested. Many thanks to the two mentioned developers.

Thank you to both developers for the tethering switch. I really appreciate it! I have “Tethering” installed but haven’t tried it yet. I will definitely try both and looking forward to hearing peoples opinions and success/issues with each application.
Now I just have to struggle and try and make a custom icon for my theme.

thank you for this.
I’ve been looking for this.
It works great!

installed “tethering” and resprung and fired it up via usb. Nothing seemed to happen and I’m definitely not getting any webpages to load. Am I missing something or does something else need to be installed along with the toggle?
December 16th, 2009 at 11:55 am
forgot to mention, I’m using a 32gb 3GS
December 16th, 2009 at 11:56 am
well does tethering work normally?
December 16th, 2009 at 12:16 pm
didn’t have tethering installed before because it is supposed to be installed with the toggle. It shows up in the settings but when I enable it “manually” nothing appears to happen. I did notice on Rpetrich’s version that according to his website for his version you need to set up an ad-hoc network which is not mentioned with Pina’s version. I guess I should give that a try though it seems that if the iPhone is acquiring the IP, etc. I would have thought Windows would recognize it as a modem. Of course I may be spoiled due to my many years of using ICS with windows mobile phones which is ridiculously easy to use and requires zero know how to implement (I’m a recent iPhone convert BTW).

This toggle is not a “hack” for those who do not currently have tethering via their carrier.
December 16th, 2009 at 1:13 pm
so then why does tethering show up under settings if it is not a hack? That option was not there prior to the hack…
December 16th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
I’m using the “Tether” one. I have iTunes installed on my laptop and tethering enabled via my carrier. Plugged in my phone turned on tether via sbsetttings. Took maybe 5s to recognize the iphone and off I went. The first time Windows will need to install the driver, which takes 30s.

ah, I think the problem is that I did not install the hack prior to the 3.1.2 update so I think I might be SOL.

Note: This is a tethering *toggle* not a full tethering implementation. If you have tethering in your settings menu, this enables / disables it. If not, you need to get tethering working first via a carrier profile. If you have 3.1.2 and AT&T you cant use unsigned profiles so you’ll have to find another way to enable it (MyWi app maybe). Once it’s enabled, this toggles it.

Follow-Up: “Tethering” works perfect for me on 3.1.2 (3G) except a cosmetic issue. Enabling and disabling takes about 5 seconds. Using v1.0, my SBSettings Tethering icon didn’t like to update its status to “On”. I saw on the developers website an update is on its way.

And what about “Tether” does it work better?
December 16th, 2009 at 9:52 pm
I installed the unsigned profile from benM.at using the instructions on http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4272, then installed “tethering” and it works perfectly using USB (I did not try BT). Thanks to the developers!

again, as stated just above. Download MyWi from cydia, it will enable tethering for you.
December 18th, 2009 at 12:05 am
MyWi and PDAnet act as hotspots and do not enable tethering but ad-hoc networking over wifi. It will work but it is not nearly as simple an implementation as plain tethering.

Thank you for VPN toggle!

“Tether” didn’t work for me. Not sure if it was something I did but “tethering” worked flawlessly
December 18th, 2009 at 12:03 pm
Is there a SBSettings toggle to turn MyWi tethering on and off?
December 21st, 2009 at 7:22 am
Thanks for the news! Tethering toggle 1.0.1 works great!

If you are running 3.1.2 there is a way to enable tethering on your iPhone. Google it, or click on the link I posted with my comment (not my site). I have used this method, and it works perfectly. You will have to SSH into your phone and patch the ‘CommCenter’ file deep within the frameworks. Do so at YOUR OWN RISK. Remember to BACKUP. Afterwards, go to benm.at/help and download your carrier file. (Yes, this works even on 3.1.2 and yes, you still keep MMS.) It works beautifully, from personal experience. Now: email, call, write AT&T and tell them to give us the data we all pay too much for as things are. AT&T makes a fortune on the best phone in the world and then accuses us of being criminals for using it, claiming we reduce the quality of service for everyone. They were warned before the iPhone came out a hurricane was coming and they did nothing, spent nothing, just to make the most money they can before the iPhone opens to other carriers. Short term profit rather than long term gains and loyalty. Sorry for the rant, but they deserve that all of us TETHER OUR HEARTS OUT! Tether your torrents! Heh. Sorry, again, for the lenght: have fun with tethered 3.1.2!

As many users have asked, I d’love to see a 3G Only Toggle (you just have to change the GsmRegistrationModel::fRatSelection=0×1 parameter to 0×2 in /var/preferences/csidata). It shouldn’t be that difficult.
Keep up the good work guys!!!

Hey, BBoss, SBSetting power controls will not showon my lock screen on a 3gs using 3.1.2. Then if I slide to unlock the power setting are there and it’s a mess the buttons are on top of each other. What’s going on? is there a fix for this? Thanks. email me and I can send u a screen shot of what’s happening.
Thanks.
