So for anyone that has not yet seen it, here is the reported changes for 2.2. Also, some preliminary tests have been performed on 2.2. Winterboard, Quickgold, and SBSettings are working (although every toggle has not yet been tested). Cydia has an update and is also working. Note, the 2.2 jailbreak is not yet out so none of you can use it yet so please do not upgrade yet. None of this is worth losing your jailbreak.
Also, it is confirmed that a baseband update is present for your 3g but not for your 2g. This means 2g call performance will not change. It also means your 2g unlocks will still be possible. For 3g, expect this to render your SIM adapters useless and updating will probably prevent a future unlock from being possible.
- Enhancements to Maps
- Google Street View
- Public transit and walking directions
- Display address of dropped pins
- Share location via email
- Decrease in call setup failures and dropped calls
- Home button used to bring you to first page of apps on springboard. (Quickgold works still, but you get returned to first page if you have multiple pages at same time).
- Enhancements to Mail
- Podcasts are now available for download in iTunes application (over Wi-Fi and cellular network)
- Improved stability and performance of Safari
- Improved sound quality of Visual Voicemail messages
- Pressing Home button from any Home screen displays the first Home screen
- Preference to turn on/off auto-correction in Keyboard Settings
As soon as it is available, I will post a working jailbreak guide and download link so stay tuned.

Wait for the new pwnage-tool?
November 21st, 2008 at 4:17 pm
sorry for being stupid lol
but I have a question
what is the benefit of updating the baseband? did apple do that to increase the protection and prevent unlocking or it has some benefits for the 3g users? and if there .. please tell me
November 21st, 2008 at 4:25 pm
there are rumors that the Dev-Team will released it sometime in this weekend because the jailbreak is ready but they will test it……
Safe Tool ! ! !

@ cba_boy,
It doesn’t seem like Apple ever use the Baseband to do much rather than prevent Unlocks / render xSIM’s useless.
November 21st, 2008 at 4:33 pm
I thought BaseBand updates improve the network and cellular data.
All the 2.1 updates for 3G have been attempts to improve the 3G problems and dropped calls, and in 2.1, the major baseband update, it did
ALSO
I backed up my Apps in AptBacnkup, then Restored-Updated to 2.2 (the new restore screen is ownage and has a progress bar!
I am now waiting to see when the 2.2 jailbrake comes out, if the restore from AptBackup will work…
If not, i wrote a list of the apps i have Just incase! :P

lolololol
I restored and updated and, I STILL HAVE NUMERIC BATTERY XD
lololol

The benefit of updating the baseband is to give the phone better signal and coverage. The last time the baseband was updated the 3g signal strength was boosted quite a bit.
November 21st, 2008 at 5:28 pm
BTW,
how do you know QuickGold still works,
November 21st, 2008 at 5:35 pm
And the times before that, the signal was shot to hell. I don’t trust a baseband update from 2.1′s which is very good. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it.

It was tested on a jailbroken 2.2
November 21st, 2008 at 5:52 pm
jailbroken 2.2? (how you do that) i thought it was a new setting if you hit the home button once it would take you to your main home page, is there a toggle to turn that off, because i would way rather have quickgold than a quick first home page.
November 21st, 2008 at 6:50 pm
I have a 3g unlocked from Hong Kong. So no need for a soft unlock so I went ahead and updated my 3g. My 2g still jailbroken at 2.1.
The 2.2 is pretty snappy and responsive with no crashes that I have seen. As far as street view and all that I think it really only is a good feature in areas that are supported like the states. This goes for bus routes as well. For a world phone this update highlights google weak spots outside the states.
At-least I have never noticed on 2.1 that face book would show a badge when I had messages. But on 2.2 they suddenly appeared. Am I missing something?
The ability to download podcast is welcomed, especially if you are already listening to your podcast it asks if you want to download more from the ipod section. Also, Safari moving the google bar at the top creates more real estate and that is good design.
All await the ability to jailbreak the 3g because I can’t live ‘long’ without my SBS!

i thought about this too, and here’s my guess.
let’s say you’re on page 2 and hit the home button. it will flip you to the first page. now you hit it again and it opens quickgold. or maybe you just hit the home button, iphone flips you to the first page AND quickgold runs, i don’t see any reason why that wouldn’t work.
i think both would work, and maybe there can be a setting in quickgold for it.

Please add in an optional step section in the guide for those that just wish to blow away their phone clean and start again with jailbreakng and Cydia.
Some of us have gone a little overboard with Cydia and installed and removed so many untold apps our phones are probably littered with more crap than a ghetto! :-)

So I upgraded my phone for 2 reasons one all of a sudden it has tons of dead pixels and 2 wanted to see the new improvements so i restored it, well everything was in categories folders for the most part after the restore i didn’t have things like settings back everything was hidden still they are by i tunes as seen to be on there but they are not able to be seen anyone have any suggestions.
November 22nd, 2008 at 5:52 am
I can’t really imagine how can Quickgold work with the new “tap home to go to first app page” shortcut in 2.2… you have to disable one of the two behaviours?
:/

happened to me- its simple
Go to settings-general-restrictions and turn them ON.
then close
then go to settings-general-restrictions and turn OFF.
Your icons should be there (but no cracked ipa’s) :P

Probably like most noobs, I’ve also added a ton of Cydia and Installer apps and tried to remove a few where I’ve had problems (mostly Installer). I still have problems with certain apps (i.TV crashes immediately, some others crash intermittently). Not sure if there’s a way I can selectively maintain just certain apps when I do the upgrade, or if it’d be better to start from scratch and stick with the really key Cydia apps (Intelliscreen, Winterboard, SBSettings, QuickGold, Snapture, MxTube, Podcaster, dTunes, Five Icon Dock, HPCalc, and few themes and ring tones). Wow, I really narrowed it down there, huh? ;^)

I accidentally upgraded to 2.2 and the new itunes. i was able to downgrade the itunes back to 8.1 but is there no way to restore back to 2.1 firmware? I get a error 1013.

On apple.com they have a new section called “Iphone for life” and it says in the game section “You can turn on Airplane mode (with no wifi) to save battery life.
I tried this and it truely does work! By a lot!!!!

SO I NEED JAILBRAKE FOR 2.2!!!!

November 22nd, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Not if you have the 3g version! You are gonna have to wait!
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:24 pm
yes, turning everything off will save battery life. this is not new. if you want SBSettings, you should have stuck with 2.1 and waited.
November 22nd, 2008 at 3:29 pm

November 22nd, 2008 at 4:14 pm

Quickgold still freezes after the 1.3.2 It works after rebooting but freezes shortly after. Anyone experiencing this on 2.2 after the update? Hope this is resolved soon. I miss Quickgold.
November 25th, 2008 at 10:13 pm
Actually, the recent application icons works but the cursor does not appear in the input field and you cannot do any search. It will work after a reboot but the cursor will disappear in the next search.

I accidentally upgraded my 2g iphone to 2.2. I still have the unlock but i lost the jailbreak. I used the new quickpwn 22 jailbreak and when it comes to jailbreaking it, it says i’m not following the instruction right or i have a faulty usb (which i dont). I did the process like 10 times and it still says the same thing. I tried downgrading to 2.1 with itunes and a 1403 (something like that) error comes up. What can I do? Nothing seems to work
