Siphon 2.0 is out for Cydia

Author: samuelv  //  Category: Apps, News

We wish all of iphone-users a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Here is the new version of my app, Siphon for iPhone and iPod Touch 2. Remember back in January 2008, Siphon was the first public version of VoIP/SIP for iPhone OS 1.X. It worked for the iPod Touch 1 (jailbreak) with the Touchmods microphones, in February/March 2008 Siphon was used for iPhone with French ADSL Provider. Since there were several versions for iphone but always with headset, because open source SDK and iPhone OS 1.X didn’t allow to access to the audio device.

Siphon is a SIP/VoIP client for the iPhone and iPod Touch 2 that allows you to save money on calls when WiFi coverage is available. You can enable SIP/VoIP on 3G/Edge network. But before you enable this option, you should read your mobile subscription, several mobile providers forbid VoIP on their data network.

Siphon allows you to make calls trough SIP providers all over the world using an interface similar to that of the iPhone. Unlike other applications, Siphon is a true SIP client, and connects directly to your SIP provider. Siphon uses the address book and favorites on your iPhone.

Siphon is already translated in 7 languages (English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Danish). If you want translated in new language, you can contact me here. The parameters of several SIP providers are described here. This list can be extended with your information. And you can follow or create issues on my site.

Using Siphon is free for the moment, but I think this type of application can be sold to 4€. So if you appreciate this application, you could donate by Paypal button in settings.

Since Apple provided the SDK and AppStore, Siphon has been ported on this environment with all limitations we know. Siphon has been submitted 4 times since October 2008. But the first three times Apple refused for different reasons:

  • Bad behavior of the interface,
  • VoIP on 3G/Edge (no test, they just read a message)

All the times, I modified (if necessary) and extended Siphon functionalities without success. I submitted for the last time in December. Since December, 7 2008 I have no news from Apple.  It’s not completely true. The December 7th, Apple asked “unexpected additional time for review”, and since of that: nothing.

It seems that if you use SupremePreferences or ExtremePreferences then Siphon settings are not displayed.
The solution is to deactivate SupremePreferences or ExtremePreferences, and to define your SIP parameters. When all parameters is ok, you can activate your extension.

  1. Handsfull Says:

This is truly one of the most cool/useful apps…period. Think about it, if you travel overseas and don’t want to pay to call home….simply find a coffee shop/wifi spot….just excellent! Donate to this guy!

  2. Mike Says:

@Handsfull: The problem with traveling overseas is that you need a data plan. Using the original data plan outside of your country will usually cost you significantly more than the long distance voice call itself.

However, Since YellowSnow is out, we can now purchase local SIM cards and just plug them in. Probably the cheapest option available.

  3. BigBoss Says:

I think handsfull is saying that you would disable your phone. Perhaps you disable phone in sbsettings. Then you go to a spot with wifi and make your phone calls over the wifi.

  4. Alan Says:

I am unable to use. Running FW2.1 and when I install it does not add the link in settings. I have added links there for Truphone and Springboard. Any thoughts??

  5. BigBoss Says:

Perhaps you didnt get the latest version installed. It should be v2.0.1

  6. Lawrence Says:

This is rox! I gave tested with wifi the sound quality was good! Most 1 sec delay. However, via 3G/EDGE there no sound. Only other party can hear me. I am looking forward if this can be fix hence i can use my mobile data to mske free local calls… Cheers

  7. Alan Says:

Shows as version 2.0.1. Tried 4 times and never adds a link in Settings. Would have liked to try it. Use VOIP a lot. Thanks

  8. Samuelv Says:

Do you use WinterBoard and ExtendedPreferences ?
    http://code.google.com/p/siphon/issues/detail?id=90

If yes, you should deactivate ExtendedPreferences, configure Siphon. And you can reactivate ExtendedPreferences.

I sent a mail to ExtendedPreferences developer but for the moment I didn’t receive an answer.

  9. Samuelv Says:

Do you 3G or Edge ? Because the speedrate of Edge is too slow for SIP.

  10. Mirco Says:

Same here. I have FW2.2 and the app doesn’t show up on my settings screen, so I can’t register. Though, since other people are able to use it, I guess that it might depend on some other app I have installed… I’ve got quite a few apps on it (unofficial ones) and I’m running yellowsn0w as well… not sure if this can help you.

If you have any guess and u want me to try it out just let me know.

  11. Mirco Says:

By the way, I did rebooted/respring, but nothing really changed. Also tried to reinstall the app, but just as for Alan I wasn’t lucky.

  12. lellyz Says:

The problem is due to Supreme Preferences. Uninstalled it and Siphon will be added in Settings.

  13. Mirco Says:

Alright, for me the problem wasn’t the Supreme Preferences, but the EXTENDED Preferences. So I guess anyone that is having similar problems should just turn them off both.

To turn of the Extended Preferences go in your Winter Board and disable it.

    Cheers

  14. Alan Says:

Thanks guys… that did it for me too. It was Extended Preferences being enabled.

  15. Lawrence Says:

Thanks for your reply. I am able to use fring with volpower3g. Just that delay was very bad. Anyone encounter same problem as me?

  16. Lawrence Says:

    I am using 3G

  17. cubmoney Says:

Would this work on an iPod Touch 1G firmware 2.2 with a ivoiceiii or ivoicepro? People have tested Voip on 1G with ivoiceii and pro with Fring and it works. Just wondering if it would.

  18. Handsfull Says:

Yeah, I’m referring to making calls out of a wifi spot…no data plan needed, your not using 3g/edge/gprs! Get in a wifi area (i/e coffee shop) and you should be good to go.

  19. samuelv Says:

Effectively, it seems Siphon works on ipod touch 1 with Macally iVoice III. But I never tested.

If another app works with this micro, Siphon should work.

  20. Max Says:

    Hello, nice app! Thanks
Any possibilities to have multiple accounts in future releases?
    Thanks
    M

  21. Bobby Says:

Is there a way to use my Skype account with Siphon?
I have a T-Mobile pay-as-you-go account and wireless internet access which I can connect to with my iPhone 2G. Someone I know mentioned Fring.
    Any ideas?

  22. samuelv Says:

Siphon uses only SIP for the moment.
And Skype doesn’t use SIP protocol :-(

  23. Lawrence Says:

Hi samuelv have you successfully use with 3G?

  24. Samuelv Says:

Yes I’m working on. It’s works, but I still have some bugs in settings management.

  25. Samuelv Says:

    Yes.
Did you try to activate 3G with Safari before launching Siphon ?
I don’t understand (for the moment) why Siphon doesn’t activate 3G connection if WiFi is unavailable.

  26. Yilong Says:

I’m having trouble using siphon over 3G, made 2 calls with it before I got an error. Getting the following error:
    gethostbyname() has returned error (PJ_ERESOLVE)

tried reinstalling and it worked again for the first call then got the same error again, wondering if AT&T is blocking voip traffic on their end? Have any ideas? I love this app it has almost no delay, compared to Fring would like to get it working reliably

  27. Samuelv Says:

    read the reply above ;-)
Activate 3G with Safari before launching Siphon.

  28. jose Says:

im also having no luck using this app, down loaded it on my phone, as far as settings are concerned tried different ways no go need help?

  29. Bobby Says:

    Hi Samuel!
thanks for the quick reply. Forget Skype. Is there a workaround so that I can use my wireless setup and use T-Mobile network? My wife has a HotSpots enable T-Mobile phone and she can make phone calls through it because our house is in a dead zone when it comes to cell reception.
    Thanks!

  30. jose Says:

i for got to mention that my last attempt was using callcentric, and when i added my account info and tried the siphon app. i got the forbidden on top right side of the dialer screen, i also have to add that im from canada (montreal) is there any work around.

  31. Samuelv Says:

You got forbidden, because your parameters is wrong. You can see on siphon[dot]googlecode[dot]com[/]p[/]siphon[/]wiki[/]SIPSettings the SIP parameters for several SIP providers. All these parameters have been given by users.

  32. Samuelv Says:

Bobby, Siphon works on 3G/Edge but you need to verify your Mobile subscription, because several mobile providers forbid VoIP,p2p… on their network.

Moreover, some mobile providers block port. In this case it will be impossible to do SIP on their network.

  33. Samuelv Says:

Did you read the last paragraph of article ? (Italics)

  34. jose Says:

thanks Samuel, but ive tried different ways , i guess im doing something wrong, is there any way you can guide me further on this process highly appreciated.

  35. jose Says:

sorry to bother you Samuel once again but because, of my over zeolot attitude about something cool and new like this app i rushed things a little to fast once i reentered everything once again, in a proper faction it worked , once again thanks and what a great app.

  36. Jon Says:

perhaps I’m reading too far into this but when you say Siphon uses only SIP for the moment, does this mean skypeout calls may be implemented later?

  37. Samuelv Says:

    Why not

  38. Tim Says:

    It’s a great app.
a/ Will it support the sip server that requires different port, such as port 5070?

b/ any selection to force to use Codec G.729? when dials out,

c/ can audio selectable to: Headset, Speakerphone, bluetooth?

d/ Does it work in background, for example, after launched it and registered to sip server, then launch some other apps, and it still can receive (rings) when there is an incoming call to SIP number?

e/ Establish Conference call between iphone call and sip call?

These are super advanced feature – will be one of the best ever. those are just idea/wishlist if not supported for now. THANX for great app that works on IPhone

  39. mario Says:

    Dear Samuel,
Could you please tell me what I put in Server??

  40. jose Says:

you just have to remember all the info you put when you signed in to new account with what ever com. you choose like username , password, because thats what you add to settings as far as server just look for the servers login address like for example ###########.com or .net, hope this helps.

  41. Tim Says:

    Update:

    a/ Yes, it did work

b/ wishlist – This is a very good to have, because, with G.729 2G Iphone still can connects to sip server and talk, as long as bandwidth is greater than 30kbps.
[I have 2G, just turned off Wi-Fi and launch Fring, it did register to sip server and talk over 2G connection, of course the sound is not clear and breaking. (Fring does not have selection for G.729 either)]

c/ does not work with either speaker phone

    d/ No – wishlist

    e/ No – wishlish

This is a great work. thanx

  42. Samuelv Says:

    Thanks Tim,
You can look on code[dot]google[dot]com/p/siphon/issues/list, some features are already described, but you could complete,
    Thanks in advance.

  43. Sony Says:

    Hi,

I just downloaded Siphon on my iPhone. My VOIP provider is HyperDog Digital. I was able to successfully register their SIP server on Siphon. But I cannot make any calls. When I try to make a call, it just shows End Call in a split second.

    My connection details are:
    User name: 2292994332
    Password: ******
    Domain: 209.17.160.130
    Sip proxy: 209.17.160.130

I’m able to successfully make calls using Fring on my iPhone with my SIP provider.

Can you please trouble shoot this for me. I’d like to be able to use a native SIP client on my iPhone. If you can get this to work I plan to donate to Siphon.

    Thank you,
    Sony

  44. Lawrence Says:

Hi Samuel, thank for the respond so far. I did not gave up hope and did alot more testing. I found that when i use within my home wifi it works. The moment i external network there is no sound. I had set all the require rtp port to forward but still doesn’t work. Wonder if for the stun server to work, requires any stun domain? Or stun server itself can do the job. Thank you.

  45. Rob Says:

    Hi,

I’m having the same problem as Lawrence above. Works well over wi-fi, however over 3g the other party can hear me, but I can’t hear them.

I seem to be having the same problem on siax and italk as well. Might be related to the 2.2 firmware (jailbroken)?

    Thanks.

  46. Jon Says:

    awesome, looking forward to that!

  47. williamng Says:

Great app, is any one try out the Globe 7 sip account on siphon 2.0.1, please share your sip setting on Globe 7, thanks!

  48. Dan Says:

Do you have + as the first character of your phone number? I found that if I had + with my sip provider (future-nine.com) it would end the call immediately.

  49. Dan Says:

I am having great success with Siphon using future-nine.com except for one issue. When I am using it over 3G the sound quality is very choppy and the person I am talking to hears most of what I’m saying but it comes choppy on there end too. Is this typical of talking over 3G? Maybe there is a better sip provider that quality is better?

  50. tyler Says:

This is sort of a stupid question, but I can’t seem to make calls to landlines.

I’m using siphon on an original iPhone over wi-fi, with the freecall service. I can call cellphones fine, even using seven digits. Unfortunately I can’t figure out how to dial landlines in the US or UK. No combination of 0′s and country code works.

When trying to call the us, I dial 001 555 555 5555, and it says I don’t need to dial any zero’s or one’s before the number. If I just dial the number, it says its invalid. How the hell do you dial international numbers!

  51. jay Says:

hey, i tried the program version 2.0.1 with gizmo5 (sipphone) and it returned an error that the request timed out, I can use this same account fine with fring, but would like to try this native client. Any ideas? I am sure that my credentials are correct and that I have available credit, any help would be greatly appreciated.

PS I used the configuration settings from the link above.

  52. Nelson Says:

how do create an account for Siphon? please help!!

  53. eu Says:

Gorgeous app !! Please donate and keep syphon free!
To developer : please include multiple accounts, it’s the only feature missing from the best voip mobile app maybe ever created.

  54. eu Says:

this is a server-side problem, please contact youre sip service provider.

  55. eu Says:

I was refering on an option in the settings>syphon>choose active account

I have 2 accounts and I have to allways configure the username and pass…

  56. Edward Says:

I followed the directions to get Vonage up and running… I get a connected message… but when I make a call siphon immediately ends the call…

  57. Olivian Says:

Incredible application. Works like a charm on iphone over 3G! Over wi-fi it’s choppy, but that is my ISP provider. Although I have a fair speed 500/100 Kb/s , I have data loss. I have a problem though: when on a SIP call and I receive a cellular phone call, the phone rings and the SIP call is dropped. I understand this is a normal behavior, but if I am on an important call I would prefer to have the cellular call sent straight to the voice mail? Can it be done?
Other than that, THANX A MILLION!

  58. ibericus Says:

Thanks a lot Samuelv, the program works fine over 3G with sipnet.ru provider. sound is nice! Very convinient, your program only is already a perfect reason to jailbreak :-)

  59. Samuelv Says:

If you deny gsm call, logically your SIP call will continue ;-)

  60. Brad Says:

I can receive calls but cannot place them get immediate call ended any ideas

  61. Tim Says:

    Hi SamualV,

I just downloaded the 2.08 and it works just great. All and the next wish is to support G.729 – I still have fisrt Iphone 2G. if you can do it and have time to do, then your app will be the first in the market for Iphone siphon – Then Apple folks may approach you :-) to endorse your app. I would spend the few extra $$ for having it to support G.729 if the cost for licensing is required.

    Thanx.

  62. Mentor Says:

When on 3G I too can receive calls but cannot place them. I get immediate call ended. (I do have the VoIPover3G package installed (but without any settings in it for Siphon)

  63. Pinhas Says:

  66. Networks Says:

You are getting “call ended” because the sip server you are trying to communicate with does not support the enabled codec your siphon is using. Go into the Settings of Siphon, under Phone settings and turn on all codec’s. If that solves your problem and you want to use a lower bandwidth codec, like GSM, you need to enable that codec on your sip account on the voip server your siphon is connecting to.

  67. Networks Says:

See my answer in Post # 25

  78. Ashish Says:

I installed latest version of Siphon from Cydia yesterday. it worked perfectly…. But today when i again tried to make call using siphon, application launched and freezes immediately and after some time automatically it quits.

Catch: I am only using wifi.. and when i switch off wifi and starts Siphon, it gets started and saying no service available (my SIP provider service which is ata.nymgo.com) also keypad is active. when i switch on wifi application freezes and quits automatically.

I used fring to check if my SIP provider is avaiable and found that was perfectly working…

Please share your thoughts if anybody also having such problems or got some solution.

Hello, i love Siphon! Everything works great but i have one question. I use this progam on a iTouch generation 3 and i was wondering how to keep the speakerphone always enabled. I have a small microphone plugged in which disables the built in speakers so I cannot hear incoming rings. However, your speaker buttons works activating my builtin speaker when I make outgoing calls

  84. Mady Says:

Even im facing exactly the same problem…is there anyway to solve this????

  85. Lexus999 Says:

Maybe if it could be a sbsetttings toggle on/off to control the internal speaker option….. Is it possible?

  86. Cain Says:

Actually, regarding to D, this is incorrect, if you have the backgrounder feature installed, it will indeed ring in the background

Only problem is you have to find the phone and then click it open AND THEN answer… if we can figure out how to hook into the real phone notification system this would be incredible!

  87. Future Nine Says:

This is most likely a bandwidth quality issue between your phone and our servers. Where are you geographically located?

Also- I’m not sure if it’s possible in Siphon – but if it is then try to change to a lower bandwidth codec like G729 or G726 – that may help. :)

Can anyone give me exact steps as to how I can download this application from Cydia. Do I just go to search and look for it?

    Thanks

  90. Tymon Says:

Hi, I’ve downloaded this app on my ipod touch and i’m trying to get it to work with google voice and my voipbuster account, with a number for incoming calls. (I’m obviously using wifi.) Currently, when i make a call from gv mobile, it rings a phone where i pick up the call, then google voice dials the number i’m calling. This worked fine with fring, but when i try to use siphon, when i tap on “Answer”, nothing happens. When receiving any calls, this same problem persists. When specifically receiving google voice calls, in fring, after answering the call, google voice prompts you to press 1 to take the call. however, fring does not have the option to use the dialpad during a call, so this was not possible. I would like to use siphon, because it does have this option. however, i cannot currently even answer calls.

Also, earlier today, i made a call directly through siphon (as opposed to using google voice mobile) and when the other line picked up, i didn’t hear anything. They later reported that they could hear me.

    Help?

  91. Tymon Says:

That was also the one and only time a call has gone through.

  92. twisted Says:

I am connected to WIFI and making a call using Siphon 2.2.0-1 , i am unable to hear anybody on the other end. They said that they could hear me but i could not hear them. Any ideas what it could be,,,,maybe a slow wifi or very busy connection??? Thanks for any ideas

  93. twisted Says:

    Search and download that’s all.
