I know I have written articles about this, but I still get several emails a day asking questions about it. So I am going to summarize the app install situation for iPhone 2.0 here in one simple post. This applies to 2.0 and newer firmware such as 2.0.1, 2.1 etc.
First point. All applications that were written on 1.x (1.1.4 and lower) will not run on 2.0 iPhone. This is a common misconception. People think that they just need to add the source to installer. Wrong. It is not a problem of adding a source. The apps simply do not work. That is why they are not available to you on 2.0.
1) All 1.1.x apps must be rewritten to run on 2.0 and will not work.
2) All sources you need come with Cydia by default on 2.0. You do not need to track down sources.
3) You cannot add installer sources to Cydia. They are different and incompatible.
4) You cannot add installer 3 sources to installer 4.
5) You should be using Cydia on 2.0 not installer 4. Installer has about 1/10th the packages that are in Cydia. On 1.1.x, installer was the app to use. On 2.0 this has changed. You should use Cydia now. At the time of this writing, there are some 900 packages in Cydia and only about 90 in installer. The packages in installer are also in Cydia. Your key packages are not in installer.
6) If you get “cannot decode package” you have added an installer 3 source to installer 4. Delete it.
7) If you do not have Cydia, you must rerun quickpwn.
So, you updated to 2.0 and you’re now missing your favorite app or game? It’s not a problem of adding the source. It probably has not been rewritten for 2.0 OS. As a side note, the combination of Cydia + Appstore gives you so much more than you ever had available on 1.1.4 anyways.

Just wondering BB if any one will bring backlight back from 1.1.4. that is one of my must haves. when it gets dark just touch the icon and it drops your backlight to your preset low setting and in the A.M. just touch the icon again and it takes you to your bright setting. So you don’t have to keep going into settings drag the slider etc. Hope someone can revive the app.

BB, in the same context, is there a way or removing Installer altogether. For some reason, everytime i exit Installer, my iphone 2g gets stuck. All i can see is the continuously rotating wheel and then it takes ages to reboot.
There are a only a couple of apps on Installer that i’m using (which are still not on Cydia) like Rename & Adikus Pool. Could they be made avaialable in Cydia also??

I dunno if you searched on Cydia..But Rename is on Cydia. Adikus Pool well there is always the alternative pool app from the AppStore.

Rename is available in Cydia. Adikus Pool is payware from ripdev, I believe, and not available in Cydia. Try one of the many pool games in appstore. You can remove installer in SSH or mobile term using this command:
rm -rf /Applications/Installer.app

Sorry, if you get that then either 1) you dont have installer or 2) you typed it wrong. This is the correct command.

Download WinSCP and SSH into your device.. Just delete the folder “Installer”..
Incidentally, i realized that it doesn’t affect the apps installed thru Installer, just deletes it..

Once you install the app backlight, you get an icon that is named backlight. Once you have icon current backlight setting is set 1. Once you touch icon it changes to backlight set 2. You set the brightness in settings for each when you touch the icon after wards to change from bright to dark. Hope I didn’t confuse you more:) !

hi, i am very new to all this and very computer illiterate, please help me
i have a couple of questions: i have jailbroken the iphone 3g with 2.1fm
and i have succesfully installed a few programs with cydia,like: iblacklist, rename and others which work fine
but in cydia i also downloaded stuff like fire battery and change the wifi signal to different colors etc but none of them take effect what have i done wrong? or what am i missing?
i’m sure its something silly but i cant find an answer

More than likely you haven’t installed Winterboard, which is the way you activate the mods. So just go to Cydia, install Winterboard, then open winterboard and put a check next to the options you want. Vwalla you have what you want.

I’ve been having an App problem from App Store since the 2.1 jailbreak. Whenever I get an application update from App Store, It will show on my springboard as an app update needed to be downloaded. So I open App store on my 3G phone and to try and do the updates, and it tells me it won’t update. I can update thru Itunes. So I go to itunes to update, and I get an error, could not update 11 applications. I’ve only read about this issue one place and no one had an answer.
Anyone else having this problem? Applications not updating in App Store on phone or in Itunes on my computer.

I suggest hooking up your iPhone to your computer then logging into iTunes with your username and password. After that, hit “sync” and sync your username and password. After that has completed, try installing the apps from iTunes rather than from App Store and see what happens.

No, if you read the article, the issue is not your installer or installer source it’s that apps from 1.1.x are *not compatible* on your 2.0.2 device.

That didn’t work either. I also tried to deauthorize/reauthorize my computer, but that didn’t work. I have 15 applications all withthe following error code: (0xE8000002E) applications having errors, Caissa, Facebook, fring, MightyDocs, PanoLab, SayWhere, SayWho!, Take ME to My Car, Tough Type, Trail Guru, Trapster, WeDict, Wikiamo & YouNote.
It says the following applications failed to update on your iPhone: lists the name of the application and then error code mentioned above.
I know this was mentioned on iphone atlas a couple weeks ago, bt no one replied about it or a fix for it.

Only way around it was to uninstall all the apps form both the phone and itunes on my computer. Then do a sync, and then add each one back by re-downloading each app individually. Pain in the arse, but there updated now.
Anyone else having this issue on their jailbroken 3G phones?

Hello…I jailbroken my iphone 3G yesterday morning, and all worked so good. Than late last night I got the same problem with iTunes, and I can not open Cydia anymore…it say “unable to load (timed out)” Than I try going into safari…can not load any website, no facebook no nothing. Do I have to restore or is there something else I can do ?

Hey guys! To begin with a good note, since I have a iPhone 3G it’s been jailbroken, thanks to you and I love it!
Secondly, I’d like to tell you that the flashlight app in cydia isn’t working very good with the firmware 2.2…yesterday I thought I did something wrong, but I tried it back today and still doesn’t work well: I had to restore it the two times! What happens is that the screen lights up as it’s supposed to be, and then when you go back out of the app….everything is darker…and darker…and darker…until you can’t see a thing!
I really like this app…any ideas what’s happening? Another crap from our friends at the Apple’s factory? ;)

I want to install the touchpad app in order to be able to control my pc wireless but, this app is just in installer and it does not work, even when I add the source it is not updated and because of that I can not get my program. To try to get something like the touchpad in cydia but I have not found anything similar. What can i do to get my app?

I’m having problems downloading and installing apps from cydia. sometimes everything works perfect (i see the bar progressing as wel as the code above doing it’s thing) but mostly, the bar progresses just a little bit, after which cydia suddenly says ‘complete’ and ‘return to cydia’ or ‘restart springboard’.
Please help me, I really want to have apps like sbsettings and pocket touch..

I got an iPhone 3G a few days ago. As I have PCs only and Pwnage Tool works only with Mac, I decided to jailbreak with QuickPwn and not worry about unlocking. I updated to latest version of iTunes, upgraded iPhone to 2.2, then downloaded QuickPwn22-1.exe, iPhone1,2_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw, and MobileInstallation from links at http://www.wikio.com/article/8195673. Jailbreaking seemed to work (on second try — process seemed to get stuck first time) and Cydia and Installer icons appear on Springboard. Then I synced with iTunes to move some media and a downloaded free app or two onto the iPhone. Later, I opened Cydia and selected to install BossPrefs, but I don’t see an icon after selecting install (and during installation process the progress bar sticks at roughly 10% progress until all of a sudden it says “complete” and offers a “return to Cydia” selection). Then I saw that SBSettings supersedes BossPrefs, so I “installed” SBSettings and tried to access it by sliding my finger along status bar, but no joy. Please guide me.

P.S. Within Cydia, I also selected to install Open SSH, and then selected to install AptBackup, with same result: no icons appear on Springboard. However, I did have one success: I selected to install Cycorder and that shows up on Springboard and seems to work fine.

Hello ! I just upgraded my unlocked iphone to the 2.2 version, and it has both Cydia and Installer on it. While I’m enjoying the convenience of all the new available apps, I’m really bummed because I seem to be having problems downloading phone zap. I miss this app because I love creating ringtones ! I downloaded it yesterday, only to find that it doesn’t even open on my iphone; it just blinks then goes back to the homescreen. I then uninstalled it and am now trying again to install it but I cannot find it on Cydia ! Please help – I really miss this app ! Are there any other alternative apps where you can create ringtones from your music ? Thank you so much !

There is a basic app in the appstord that is free called mylite and it does a lot more than the light from cydia. The only bummer is it doesnt increase your brightness, as this is not allowed.

All that aside now, I am Really curious why apps such as Bossprefs/SBsettings, etc… (mostly your popular, “debugged”, larger apps availible on Cydia and similar) continue to either…
– Can not find applications after installation (I’m only speaking of graphical based programs which actually include a icon launcher, embed into settings, or open via some manner of finger guestures).
Even after respring or full shut down/reboot, attempts to uninstall/reinstall the app again, the applications simply do not exist on my iPhone or are inaccessable by their forestated conventional means.
– Alternatively I face the problem of said apps freezing my iPhone over and over, it is a gamble to load many of these proclaimed great applications like the ones mentioned above.
Most recently I have tried to install Hood (from Installer 4), disaster one… I can’t find it to launch it (at least in the places I should be), secondly it froze my iPhone and randomly caused it to go into Safe Mode (a feature I have never bothered to learn to acces).
I understand that ‘Hood’ is seperate from BigBoss and Cydia but, the end result is the same.
I have been trying for some time to find an app which will allow me to access the iPhones run-time screen/task manager with the ability to kill apps and free up/view memory usage.
No I have not tried the small paid app in the app store with less features but, I have tried to install about 3 others I could find on Cydia/Installer to no avail.
I also have at least… 60+ applications install on my iphone, mostly games and apps from the apple store. That being said I still have nearly all of my 16G worth of space free on this device.
My only thoughts are something wrong with the jailbreak OR my number of applications causes my iphone (and those bigboss type apps) to get so bogged down it causes the bigboss apps to freeze up or crash.
Any thoughts?
I’d really prefer to not have to wipe and rejailbreak my phone again if possible.
I use the ‘Categories’ program and it takes hours to organize everything into that again (another wonderful program that freeze’s my phone every 20 seconds).
Help! Please!?

To the guy who installed Hood via Installer. That is your problem. Installer really screws up your phone these days. I’ve installed packages from there and almost always end up wiping and starting over. It’s to the point now that I no longer install installer. I know it can be hard to let go but there really is no reason to have it. Anything that is available in Installer is available in some form or another in Cydia

I recently bought a 3G iPhone and went on the jailbreak it. Everything went ok and downloaded Cydia and got a couple apps that worked fine, but when I went to download to Xadacka theme or any other for that matter, none of them work. My friend was able to get it to work, and I checked all of his settings and mine matched his, but it didnt seem to work for me.

I’v iphone 2G os 2.2 jailbreak phone i do installed some app from cydia working nice, but for some reasons now when i tried to add some source from the cydia almost at the end of the installation process i recive messages that code zip (2) and the names ofr the app sources as well
realy i can not add any source from the cydia any more i’m looking for your advice .

It appeared that, your app Mobile Theater is not working propertly when downloading or streaming. Everytime when I click on the movie I wanted to download it, would pop up a message saying that, my WiFi is not connected however, my WiFi is always been connected and is enable. I have no problem getting into the Mobile Theater app or any other website useing my WiFi connection. I went ahead and did Modify the app by reinstall and still haveing the same problem. So, I try my 3rd time by completly uninstall the app on Cydia and still having the same problem. I believe this is casue by some bug from the softeware. Can you please help me with this issue. I look forward on your respond.

hi,i just want to ask that i’v installed winterboard on my ipod touch 2g.But when i install some winterboard themes on my ipod2g,it wont apply..also,when i check packages in CYDIA,winterboard is jst highlighted with some red/pink color..what does that mean?

Using a new iPhone 3G with the 3.0 firmware and after Jailbreaking and Cydia I was able to use my CellularOne Sim Card and all I had to do was to put in “cellular1wap” under the APN with no username or password and the Edge service worked fine with no problems. Prior to adding the APN the Edge did not work.

When i download a movie in Mobile Theatre as it starts downloading i get the message in red ‘Download failed. Could not start saving file’
