Geohot released a better 3gs unlock. It installs with his Cydia repository and patches some files on install. After this, no process or daemon is left running. This sounds like a better replacement for ultrasn0w. However, unlike ultrasn0w, it cannot be disabled with a toggle. A restore will restore the iPhone to stock locked state. Sounds very nice. Here are details from his site:
Wifi fails? Battery fails? Unlock fails? You need purplesn0w, the geohot 3GS unlock solution. Now I know you here a lot about different colors of sn0w, but I’m here to tell you why purplesn0w is the best. First off, what is purplesn0w? It’s a soft unlock for your 3GS that I’d actually use day to day. It’s not a daemon that takes any resources, and it doesn’t add a task to your baseband. It’s very close to a true unlock. All it does is patch three files, CommCenter, lockdownd, and your wildcard activation plist(which you need, activate w at&t sim first, no hacktivation support yet). That’s it, no other files are installed. Props to Oranav for the at+xlog exploit!
A full explanation is coming soon, but I think you clever reversers out there will see what it does, and see why it’s so pristine :-) The payload is radically different from other varieties of sn0w. beta as usual, back up first.
Be sure to have legit activated 3GS
Disable 3G if you don’t have it(like T-Mobile).
Add apt.geohot.com to Cydia
Install com.geohot.purplesn0w
Watch for success output in Cydia
Reboot, and enjoy your unlocked iPhone

Why would you want to toggle unlock though? When you’re unlocked, you can still use your official carrier if you want…

I would love to hear some more insight from someone I trust on this. Is purple better than ultra? We need someone to do a side by side comparison. What factors would go in to deciding the winner?

Question on YellowSn0w, Do I really still need it for my 3Gs iphone? Was this for only the 3G iphone?
UltraSn0w is for using other SIM Carriers and RedSn0w is for 3Gs Unlock…..Let me know…

No… it wasnt compatible in my experience… I had to rejailbreak using the purplera1n. But Im glad I did… it feels so much more stable

I bought my 3Gs yesterday 32GB Full Price ( the lady at the apple store tough that I was crazy lol $760 including taxes.
I went home and I jailbreaked with redsnow, then unlocked with ultrasnow.
All went so smooth, I pretended to be a geek :).
Tmobile working, wifi is perfect. All very smooth so far. Except that I CANNOT go to iTunes, or app store via the iPhone. As soon as the app is launched, it comes back to the Home screen. PLEASE HELP.

@BigBoss … I really wonder why is it necessary to have a Legit Activated 3GS while the purpose of PurpleSn0w is to UNLOCK the iPhone 3GS? I bought 3GS 32GB (LOCKED) over in the US during the 1st August 2009 and jailbreak and unlock using the RedSnow and Ultrasn0w … the problem is the BATTERY, it drains very quick and have to recharge all the time ,.. it only last less than 24 hours. I am trying to use the Purplera1n and PurpleSnow RC2 but it does not work on me. I live in Middle East. Any suggestion, BigBoss?
