The Future of BossPrefs

Author: BigBoss  //  Category: Apps, Jailbreak

So just so you all know what I have been working on lately, I am currently working on a very exciting new app with developer Ipodtouchmaster. It’s called SBSettings. We have taken bossprefs to the next level. It is not yet done, but here you can get a glimpse of what to expect.

Here are a couple screenshots:

The toggles drop down when you swipe along the status bar. It is very fast and can be used while in any app without exiting the app. Suppose you are in Safari but realize your 3g is not yet enabled. Simple! Just swipe the statusbar and tap 3g and resume in safari where you left off. No need to exit safari and load settings or bossprefs.

Like bossprefs, this will have an addon module so you can create your own addons and also an application component that will be launched with the little settings button (see top right of the screenshots) to let you do things like hide icons and all the other cool things BossPrefs currently does. We are also planning to add some other cool features.

We will be offering beta testing of this app from this site soon so keep on the look out.

quickpwn works well. tells you exactly what you have to do

  3. Nadeem Says:

Any news or updates about Categories being written using mobilesubstrate ?

  4. Gregor Says:

    Hey,

that looks great. It would be great also if it would be possible to add as addons the thing that is on Nokias known as profiles – you would click on an icon and you would put the phone on mute or on only vibrator. Do you think it would be possible to do this thing?

  5. reznor9 Says:

looks and sounds like iFastSwitch from the guys that gave us the crappy Skrewcommon back in 1.1.4. Loved the old app, just swipe the status bar and there it was, as fast as quickgold… just wish it was more stable. Hopefully your iteration will be. Looking forward to it. I will beta test when availible

  6. BigBoss Says:

What sort of stability issues did that have?

  7. reznor9 Says:

There were a few issues I experienced:
1)It would just cause the springboard to freeze sometimes when you used it.
2)Sometimes when swiping the status bar to hide the app it would make the springboard non-responsive, although double tapping the home button was still working as well as the sleep button. I think what was happening was that sometimes when you swiped the statusbar to toggle the app off, it would remove the graphics/icons, but wouldnt really quit the app… so if you tapped in the right areas it would still turn off your wifi and edge and such. I used to have to memorize where the respring springboard button was because that was the only way to get control of your springboard back, other than rebooting.

Even though it caused me to restore once or twice I still loved using it. It got those ugly SwapBT and ToggleWifi apps off my springboard. LOL
What was neat, was that this app was even accessible through the lock screen. So I could toggle my wifi, bluetooth and everything else straight from the lockscreen just by swiping the status bar. I hope you can pull this off too.

I replied to you but the color of my text seems to be the same color as the background so i’ll write it again…

sounds amazing! keep up the good work bigboss. Good luck with the transition from sleepers

  10. reznor9 Says:

This isnt really related to this app, but is related to the fact that this app can function on top of other apps that are running, like your example of toggling 3G while in safari.

Ive been trying to get someone to pick up that project forever but no one will touch it or even comment on weather or not it is possible. So let me run it by you and set up a scenario.

Lets say your in safari surfing the net, reading your blog and you get a text message… here is what happens
1)pop-up appears with the message and 2 options… you can either CLOSE or REPLY.

A)Close: The pop-up disappears and you go on surfing safari.
    B)Reply: the pop-up disappears
    B2)safari closes
    B3)native sms app launches
B4)you type in your reply and send
    B5)you close the sms app
B6)you launch the safari app back up and now the website or blog has to reload, which is causing the data to redownload the webpage, causing loss of time and battery power.

This is already exhausting enough but usually one reply leads to another and you repeat this cycle over and over again, till you either dont want to reply or you dont want to surf the net anymore.

Is there a way you can make an SMS app that is capable of running on top of other apps like your new bossprefs is going to do? That way when your surfing in safari and you get a pop-up with your text message you can read it and hit the CLOSE button, or you can just hit REPLY and reply to it right there on top of safari(I guess within a text box inside the popup?)… hit send and then it disappears.
Is this possible, and is this a project you would be interested in picking up? This would be as amazing as quickgold in my opinion.

  11. rqg Says:

If you have Backgrounder then you should close the message popup, then hold the home button to enable backgrounding and get to the springboard.

You turn on the sms app, write your response and Safari runs in the background.

Finally, having finished witing the message you go back to Safari.

  12. BigBoss Says:

Safari already stays loaded. The problem is that iPhone does not have enough system memory to do what you want. The same thing happens if you load a new tab in mobile safari and return to the previous one.

  13. BigBoss Says:

I am experiencing something similar to #1 above and that is part of the reason that it is not yet released for beta testing. Also, the nature of how SSH toggle has to work is making it take a long time in some cases to use. It’s very random. It may have to do with the amount of memory in use.

This app is closed by tapping the window and we don’t have the 2nd issue. You can call it up while locked also.

  14. reznor9 Says:

what I wanted is to be able to respond without launching the SMS app. To reply within a text box within the popup that delievers the SMS

  15. frantik Says:

ya its goot. Days and months I look for here renovation.

  16. johnny0 Says:

    Hi-

Have you considered a “Minimize Power” button that turns off everything but EDGE? Basically a macro to milk the most out of the battery you have remaining — 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth, Location Services, Auto Brightness, as well as turn brightness to its lowest setting.

Also handy would be a “car mode” that would turn on Bluetooth, Location Services, and Auto-Brightness. (I always forget to turn off GPS after I get out of the car…)

An indication of any apps that are currently being backgrounded would also be very useful. Or maybe even a way to select which apps should be backgrounded (i.e editing the backgrounder.plist).

Look forward to helping beta test.

This app looks very very very cool!!!

is there a way to put apps there too to make it like a settings/app launcher?!

also I am definatly looking forward to beta testing!!!!
    count me in :D

  18. SeijinZero Says:

OMG! I can’t WAIT! I’m ALWAYS toggling 3g, edge, and wifi, to save battery. And every time I always forget to turn it on and have to close, toggle, and reopen. it sucks! One thing I always wanted in boss prefs (which if I knew which files I needed, I probably could set it up myself) was to turn off GPS too. I’m sure that eats battery, but I’m not sure if it’s always on. Even if it’s not, it seems like the cool thing to do in apps, log your location, and it’s annoying. Plus, in 2.x, text messages keep ringing until you read them. Any way you could set it to only once and add that too? THANKS!

  19. ZerocoolAK Says:

There are some good ideas being posted with suggestions. I would also like a feature to toggle the passcode lock on and off. It is not a big deal to go into settings and do it, it is just several steps that need to be taken and it would be great to be able to do this on the fly. I can’t wait for this app to come out. Bossprefs is great, I use it all the time… this sounds Superior. I am also very interested to see how the addons module will work. Keep up the good work and looking forward to it’s release. :)

  21. Daniel Says:

Hi, this is a great app, but after I install it, the display get shrink, I mean that when I try to see a picture, the display has a line in the top like if it have some dead pixels.

  22. MidTownGuy Says:

A toggle for GPS (Location Services) would be very useful; especially for conserving battery. Can you please add that in or publish the settings for the old BigBossPrefs utility.

  23. nnsense Says:

    Hi!
I’m in big trouble here.. I think this is the BEST app for iphone, and i use it everyday.
    But…
Now i bought an app on AppStore (FourTrak), and it crash everytime i start it.
So i’ve checked their website and… it seems it has issues with SBSetting.. so, i DO NOT WANT uninstall SBPrefs, is there a way to switch it off?
    else.. kill it, temporarely?

It could be ok, to me, also to KILL THE WHOLE MOBILE SUBTRATE and use fourtrak in “safe mode”, it doesn’t matter… :(

  24. Gregor Says:

This is a wonderful app and I have a FEATURE REQUEST that would make it even better:

If it would be possible to set times at which specific buttons would automatically turn off and on this would allow us to save battery. I guess nobody needs phone and wireless and 3g during the night so we could automatically turn them off during night.

What do you think? Any other application that already does this?

  25. Alex Afonso Says:

    Hello,
First of all congratulations for the work.
I have one bug to report.
    I have a iphone 3G 2.1 Firw jailbroken
Originally from Vodafone but I use a rebesim to use another simcard.
In the sbsetting after I turn the edge or 3G on or Off give me a message that the simcard is invalid and I have to take the simcard and put again. But on bossprefs everything works fine, I can turn On or Off the 3G or he EDGE and don’t give me errors.

  26. rob Says:

With the new version, I cannot access SBSettings from “lock screen”. I’d like to see that capability put back in please.

  27. waldemar Says:

Absolutely marvelous! Any chance of having a separate GPS toggle (separate from Airplane mode, that is) to allow GPS use on flights which don’t prohibit it? I realize I won’t currently have maps, but with Zulutime and the like I can capture waypoints and figure out afterwards what that lake/city/feature was.
    thanks!

  28. maaaatteo Says:

    well done!

any way to access it by double-tapping home,
    as it was with bossprefs?

    thanks for your works :)

  29. Drew Says:

Thank you so much for this. It’s the best utility on the iPod touch ever!

  30. Jin Says:

btw, when I try to turn edge off, most of the time, it will freeze my phone.

  31. vec Says:

    Hi,
I have an iphone 3G 2.2 with SBSettings installed. When I tried to turn off SSH, the phone just freezes. I can’t ssh into it to force a reboot since I just turned it off. Is this a known issue?

  32. Stephen Says:

Just a quick request. Would it be possible to get an enable/disable javascript toggle? Btw, love the app!

  33. Jeff Says:

Wish list: Add “Location Services” to Toggles.

  34. Bfadd Says:

Is it possible to add a toggle icon for “Call forwarding”?

Currently, I need to go into Settings -> Phone -> Call Forwarding -> On/Off

It would save me a lot of time if I could do this directly from SbSettings.

    Thanks!

  35. a-damn Says:

WTF?? Whenever I try to update SBSettings from Cydia I get:

    Source Error:
    Undetermined Error

and it doesn’t install. I can install anything else, EXCEPT SBSettings. I even tried totally removing SBSettings, rebooting my iPod Touch and installing it again, and I get the same error. So now I removed SBSettings and I can’t even get it installed anymore.

    PLEASE HELP!

  36. Ed Says:

Very handy app! Would like to the ability to toggle without having to unlock iPhone (as in earlier version). Maybe a toggle for to do so in locked/unlocked state? Maybe a combo toggle for both BT and WiFi? I switch these two back and forth together always.

    Keep up the good work!

  37. yanks Says:

It would be really nice if you could add a safari download plugin toggle and a imobilecinema plugin toggle for SBSettings.

  38. seen Says:

    hi,

it would be nice to have a toggle for the silent mode vibration.

  39. 4thachronic Says:

Best app ever! Except I cant use PocketTouch, the status bar stays at the top.

  40. Muzzy Says:

Anyone else have a problem with SBS popping up inadvertently ? Sometimes playing games and whatnot requires touching the screen on the top end causing SBSettings to be a killjoy in the middle of some action.

Would be great to be able to disable the swipe in favor of a double tap on the Home key or something.

  41. indsha008 Says:

Hi !! I have put SSh on my main 4 toggles when u swipe for SbSettings. 5 out of 10 times, when I toggle SSH, whole iphone freezes and reboots on its own after a minute.

Each and every other fuction of SBSettings working great! Thanks for this wonderful system app.

I hid the bossprefs applications with all my apps docked on accident… Is there a way I can get everything back on my iphone??

  44. Burton Says:

I was wondering if there is a way to lock down or put a password on SBSettings after the swipe of the finger. I was hoping to stop any prying eyes if they decided to stumble upon it.

  45. Yma Says:

    Gr8t apps
The only issue I got is Edge couldn’t be turned off…..

  46. Owen Says:

Just wandering: What would I have to do to get the code for this app? Are you willing to even give it to me?

  47. Oli4 Says:

    Hallo,
I was wondering if there is a way to change the color of the text in sbsettings. I want to make a white theme and because the text is also white you can’t see anything.

  48. Rick G Says:

I agree that a preference to launch SBSettings with another gesture that is harder to do accidentally, like maybe a double swipe.

Also access to a wider range of prefs.

    Thanks for your great work.

  49. TBone Says:

I agree that SBSettings starts up accidently, like during a phone call if I pull the phone away from my face for a second. I then go to hangup and I have to close SBSettings first. As well, can the SBSettings closure “X” be made a bit bigger? I tap, tap , tap and eventually turn off 3G without ever hitting the closue “X”. Otherwise I love this app.

  50. Chris Says:

    what happened to my post??

  51. Russell Says:

I recently downloaded this, and, having quickgold, hid all my apps. It then exited and said setting language, then went to the loading circle. The circle then froze, so I just held down the power and home buttons until it shut off. It won’t turn back on. Itunes finds it but I don’t want to have to restore it. Please help.

  52. Ali Says:

Would it be possible to get a Safari DL toggle?

  53. Rob Says:

Has anyone else seen sonic hedgehog peeking out from beneath sbsetting as it closes??

I’ve updated sbsettings to v2.99 on my 3g running fw2.2 and now every once in a while, as sbsettings closes, I see a glimpse of sonic climbing a ladder. It disappears as soon as sbsettings is fully closed. Looks like it was sitting under the app.

It doesn’t seem to affect anything, but I’m curious, and I think it’s funny :D

I’ve never had any app with sonic, and no, I’m not heavily medicated :p

  54. UARMF Says:

Bossprefs isnt working right in iPhone 3.0 WiFi doesnt enable or disable Wifi connection.

  55. bratislaw Says:

sbsettings 2.99-4 isnt working right in iphone 3.0 (iphone 2g generation), edge is disabled, but the iphone is still connecting via edge and is showing a “data ip address”.

  56. TDC Says:

    Same problem here !

  57. dbdog Says:

Here’s one more vote for a toggle for “call forwarding”. I’d use it several times a day. Please please smart coders!

    I love sbsettings!

  58. Huh? Says:

    Req: skip song ipod toggle.

This would be really nice when you have your ipod running in shuffle mode while navigating with navigon or tomtom….

tou dont have to exit navigaation for skipping a song…
Can anybody do such thing? please?

  59. Acid Says:

I am unable to launch SBSettings from my Home Screen.

To launch it I first have to go to either email or safari and than go to LANDSCAPE MODE and than slide my finger across to launch it..

Can you tell me what is gone wrong?

    many thanks!

  62. ruthbuilt Says:

What happened to ABRecentCleanup?? TOTALLY necessaty if you want to keep your email addresses(the ones ou send to) PRIVATE. Is there a new add on in SB Settings for this? whats it called?

  63. Pete Says:

Is fast notes broken in iOS 4.1 ???

I can type in a note. But when I close the notes window, which I have to do to get rid of the keyboard panel, and the reopen the notes window, the text is gone. I get a blank notes window again.

The whole fast notes thing is embedded in SBSettings, right? So it can’t be, that the problem is because I missed to install a required package.

  64. Mario Says:

I’d love to have a call forwarding toggle for SB setting. Would save me a bunch of trouble.

    Please.

  65. Anonymous Says:
