    What is Jailbreaking

    Author: KvX  //  Category:

So you ask yourself what is jailbreaking? you have heard some friends talk about it but never really looked too much into it until you got you’re new iphone, ipad, ipod or even apple tv. Let me give you a fast once over to explain what is jailbreaking and some benefits it can give you.

    What is Jailbreaking

To put it simply jailbreaking is the process of removing limitations on the IOS (Apples operating system of your device). The jailbreaking process is completed by using exploits in the hardware or software. Jailbreaking simply frees your device from the limitations Apple or even your carrier like Verizon or At&t have placed on the device.

Jailbreaking opens the door for you to further customize the device and gain access to a wider variety of apps and tweaks. Jailbreaking provides you with root access to your device to fully unlock its potential, like using different skins, and themes to personalize its look and feel.

See the below shots of just a few up the options available.

So now that you know what jailbreaking is you may want to know why should you should jailbreak, for that answer click here for our why jailbreak iphone page. Maybe you have decided you read enough and you want to jailbreak your device right now, for that acheter levitra click here for the jailbreak now page.

    Why Jailbreak iPhone

    Author: BigBoss  //  Category:

    v4.0 updated November 24th 2014

    Introduction:
So you have your iPhone(6, 5s, 5, 4, 4ss) and you can install thousands of apps from AppStore. What’s all this commotion about jailbreaking? Why would you need to jailbreak? What does it offer? In this post, I will cite some of the most compelling reasons to jailbreak your iPhone(currently iphone 6, and 5 through Firmware version 8.1.). I will continually update this post as changes occur. Not sure What is Jailbreaking? Click here

    Why Not Appstore:
Simply put, Apple’s rules for AppStore are way too limiting. The apps listed in the sections below are not possible to be in AppStore since they break one or more of Apple’s rules. These rules keep control of the iPhone platform in Apple’s control. Some of these rules include: patching system files such as SpringBoard, allowing apps to run in the background, running apps out of the “sandbox”, and simply doing things Apple decided that they don’t want you to do often for reasons to their benefit, not yours (such as tethering).

    Risk Free:
Jailbreaking is not unlocking! It is risk free and totally legal. Everything that works before jailbreaking continues to work after. Jailbreaking only adds features. Jailbreaking is risk free and cannot void your warranty. You can simply restore in iTunes at anytime to get back to a factory state. You are not alone, many people are doing it. There are over 10 million jailbroken devices now! For understanding of jailbreak vs unlock read my terminology post.

    How To:
If you decide after reading this that you wish to jailbreak, head on over to our guides section and find the guide or method that works best for you. I recommend one of the pwnage methods.

Reason #1: Winterboard (or BossPaper) + Customization
Winterboard allows you to do this:

    or this:

This is just the “tip of the iceberg”. There is so much more you can do. You can have web content as your background. My theme consists of 350 images that rotate every 15 seconds in a slide show. Here is a sample of some of these images:

You can even have video playing as your wallpaper.

4.0 users: think apple’s new backgrounds kills winterboard or bosspaper? Hardly. Winterboard lets you theme the whole UI. Bosspaper lets you pick a folder of images and lets them rotate on any interval you set in a slide show. How about your whole camera roll as rotating backgrounds?

Reason #2: SBSettings – Fast Toggles
So you’re in Safari. You turned off your WiFi or your 3G to save battery. Now you loaded Safari and it’s loading slowly with EDGE. Do you close out safari, open settings, traverse the menus and reenable the 3g? Or do you just live with the EDGE this time?

SBSettings solves this by providing fast toggles by swiping your status bar. With SBSettings, you just swipe your status bar, enable the WiFi or 3G, and resume safari where you left off. When done, swipe again, and disable the battery draining wifi or 3G options Notice also the ability to add date and free memory to your status bar? The processes button allows you to free memory and kill backgrounded processes. Simple! SBSettings is must have.

    Reason #3: SMS Quick Reply
The best feature of all SMS apps is the quickreply. When an incoming SMS arrives, you normally have to decide whether or not you will quit your existing app to respond or if you will respond later. With these apps, you get quick reply. You can just reply, on the spot, without leaving your current app or game. After you type your response and hit send, your app resumes right where it left off:

There are three apps out that offer better SMS: BiteSMS, MySMS and iRealSMS 2. In addition to landscape SMS, you can search contacts, search SMS, forward SMS, send SMS to multiple people at once, enable / disable keyboard correction. These are all features that are missing from the stock SMS client.

Reason #4: Backgrounder + Task Switcher Mods

While it’s true Apple added multitasking, they did it in such a manner that has some flaws. First, the app must be multi tasking aware.  Not all apps are. Or in some cases, the app is multitasking aware and you wish it would just close and free up its memory when you hit home.

Backgrounder solves these issues by giving you full control over which apps will background, how they will background, and if they will background at all. You can have the app remain fully running using native backgrounding method, or have it use Apple’s method if it is available (a multi tasking aware app), or force it to close each time you hit home. Just as it was meant to be.

Next issue, Apple has cluttered the task switcher with every recently launched app, whether it is running or not. Also, if you want to close an app, you have to hold the icon in the task switcher for a second to get them all wobbly and only then can you close the app. How annoying!

Switchermod solves this. With switcher mod, you can elect to have only the running apps show up in the task switcher. Further, all apps in the task switcher have the close X button on them without having to hold anything down. Very nice.

    Reason #5: Folder Enhancer

Apple copied Categories app on 4.0 and gave us folders. Great right? Unfortunately, you cannot have folders in folders and are limited to only 12 apps per folder. If you have 120 games, that’s still 10 game folders, almost a whole page dedicated to just games. Still all the clutter.

This is solved by folder enhancer. This removes the 12 icon per folder limit. It also allows you to put folders into folders. In general, it makes folders what it should have been.

    Reason #6: Cydia

There are many other apps available only for jailbreakers. These are apps that Apple has either declined from Appstore for one reason (usually they break one of their ridiculous rules) or the developer doesn’t own a MAC or doesn’t feel like paying $100 to distribute their app. For a list of what’s avaiable in Cydia, load Cydia. You can check out what is in my repository here. Many of these apps offer functionality that is just not available in Appstore. For example:

Springflash – iPhone 4 flashlight that is enabled by holding power button. Just hold power and the LED light turns on. Hold it again and the light turns off.

Flashlight – Better than Appstore’s many flashlights because it makes the screen brighter. What good is a dim light? Sheesh.

iBlacklist – Filter incoming calls and SMS!

Reason #7: Take Control of Your System
Would you want to own a PC where only Dell decided what you could do with it? Jailbreaking opens your device up to you deciding what to do with it. You can install a BSD unix subsystem and SSH. You can use a mobile terminal. It’s just like a real mini computer! I even used iPhone SSH shell and iPhone GCC to compile most the applications I released on this site!

    Reason #8: Unlocking
Finally, and I almost decided to leave this out, but the only way to unlock your iPhone and put it onto another carrier is by jailbreaking it. The unlocking apps will require system level patching and activation all of which can only be done via jailbreaking. Note also that you need not unlock to jailbreak. They are two separate things.

    Reason #9: Phone Loss Tracking
iLocalis is an app that you can install onto your jailbroken iPhone and using its GPS / location services, it will tell you where the device is. If you have a 3g device with GPS, it will be pinpoint accurate. If you ever lose the device you can log into iLocalis web site and track the location of the device.

    Reason #10: Quick Scroll
Quickscroll from KennyTM lets you get scrollbars in apps like safari. After installing it, just tap with 2 fingers and a scrollbar appears on the left or bottom that you can actually move. Imagine trying to follow a game faq while playing a video game or a long web page and having to finger down about 200 times to get to the end of the content. Now with the quick scroll you can just scroll there directly in a second. This is how things should have been done. Fully configurable in settings.

    Reason #11: Music Controls
There are many music apps out in appstore such as pandora, orbmusic, slacker etc. These apps all can stream music or play music from different sources. Very nice right? The problem is that these apps don’t integrate into your iPhone. If you get an email when listening to music, you have to close the app, which stops the playback of music, to check it. If you get an sms, you have to quit playing music to view and respond to it. How dumb is that?

Music controls solves this by patching the controls directly into the springboard. You can see what’s playing, stop, next track, just like you do with the built in app. A must have for anyone that uses these music services.

In addition, and the reason I love music controls, is that it adds a statusbar view of the track that’s currently playing and lets you pause, next, prev there. You can see this in the screenshot below that shows musiccontrols going while I kick PDXGeek’s ass (from iphonerepocenter.com) in a friendly game of chess.

    Reason #12: Bluetooth Keyboards

With this app called BTstack keyboard from Matthias Ringwald, jailbroken iPhone users can now use a bluetooth keyboard for text entry in your iPhone. Great for college or taking notes in a class or meeting at work! The app should work with most any bluetooth keyboard available. For more details see Ringwald’s product page.

The keyboard is available for $5 on Cydia Store. Added to reasons to jailbreak!

    SBSettings v3.3

Author: BigBoss  //  Category: Apps, General, Jailbreak

    Changes:

      v3.3.1

    • Fix: statusbar date on 4.2.1 or newer devices.
      v3.3

    • Fix: Updated fix blanks button to hopefully not crash when more than one blank exists
    • Fix: Hopefully fixed the more app crashing when one of the ads cannot load.
    • Fix: When moving toggles order, added back the “save” button so user knows to press “save” to save changes.
    • Fix: Lock screen buttons when you hit the power button on the lock screen. Removed lock and the title so it fits.
    • Fix: Internal window ordering in main drop down window to help compatibility issue with folder enhancer.
    • New: Added option to more app, system options, to delete the carrier name to give more space to statusbar for things like date and free memory.
    • New: Included Max’s Serious SBSettings HD theme that adds a retina icons display theme to default sbsettings. Thanks to Max at maxthemes.com for this great theme!
    • New: Added retina icons for the more app for retina displays. Thanks to 42395_skyline for these icons!
    • New: Added support for springboard key that was used by makeitmine app. This means that installing SBSettings should actually fix makeitmine. (I did this because it’s needed for the delete carrier name option).
    • Toggles: Removed phone toggle from default. It doesn’t work on 4.2.1 and newer devices. Use airplane instead. (Phone toggle is now installable via separate package in cydia for older devices).

Note: Everytime I release an update to SBSettings, my inbox is literally flooded with a whole bunch of “SBSettings bugs” that are not even remotely related to SBSettings. Sometimes it takes a long time to debug these issues and point out which app had the issues. If you are having problems, and it’s some wacky thing that is not in the change log above, you should consider removing mobile substrate and all the apps it wants to remove, rebooting, installing sbsettings in this state, and seeing if you can reproduce the issue. Then reinstall your apps one-by-one. I know it’s a pain, but this is basically what I’ll recommend you do when I sense that the issue cannot be SBSettings related http://www.tadalafilfromindia.net/.

Click2Call – A New Way to Call Your Favorite People

    Author: eni9889  //  Category: Apps

Click2Call has been updated to v 1.1-5. This updated version brings custom contact icons and the ability to change the title of the contact shortcuts.

For those of you who are not familiar with Click2Call, it is an application that allows you to make springboard shortcuts of your favorite contacts and dial them with a simple click. This includes both normal phone calls as well as FaceTime calls. While this is not a new concept, the difference with Click2Call is that while it still makes WebClips which you can easily delete it works with MobileSubstrate to place the calls so there is no need for safari or a second prompt.

There are more features coming soon such as SMS, Skype and other applications and as always I am open to suggestions.

    ScreenRecorder

    Author: boopyman  //  Category: Apps

ScreenRecorder is a very useful little utility that lets you take video captures of your screen. This app is almost a necessity whenever you need to make a video on your iPhone without the use of a computer. Some examples of what you might need this application for are making a tutorial, a demo, or just an explanatory video for a friend who needs some help on his device. You could even use this app as a “Notes” application, with the only difference being that instead of having to write everything down, you can just film it! As a plus, you can record your voice with a microphone and email the video for viewing on a computer!

This app was rightfully criticized in the past for having a huge memory problem, which was fixed in more recent versions. Here is a list of all updates since the original release:

    1.3:

-Now has “saving” screen. (Prevents many errors related to users tapping buttons while video is being saved)

    1.4:

-Saving screen now adapted to length of video.

    -Audio recording.

-Video length much closer to actual capture time.

    1.5:

    -Videos capture time virtually unlimited.

    -Videos now in portrait mode.

    -Better UI

    1.5.1:

    -Fixed email problem.

If you want to see an example of the result this app can give, view this video:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvbOzgiugcc

Here is a screenshot of the application:

ScreenRecorder is available in the Cydia Store for $1.99. If you want to try the application first, please don’t download a cracked version, there is a free demo in Cydia called ScreenRecorderDemo tadacip.

    Categories v2.99.4 Out

    Author: BigBoss  //  Category: News

I have pushed v2.99.4 out which is mainly to add the enhanced icon selector screen. Those of you on older devices like 2g, 3g with lower memory may have experienced a lot of crashing trying to select an icon for a folder. The more icon addon packs you install, the worse the problem was.

This version of categories changes the behavior by separating the icons into icon packs. Now when you select an icon, you will be given a list of icon themes. You select that and only view the icons in that theme. This way less icons are loaded at a time and you should avoid running out of memory.

    Here is how it looks:

To anyone making an icon pack, icon locations have moved, and existing icon packs need to be updated. I have updated all the ones I host. Icons go in /var/mobile/Library/Categories/Icons/packname folder. Please try to keep the icons in the folder under 100 and group them together if you have a lot of icons.

    Categories Beta v2.99

    Author: BigBoss  //  Category: News

Edit: Ok, updated the deb to 2.99.1. I guess it wasn’t properly code signed. Sorry. Link below is updated.

It’s been slow going due to my lack of time lately, but I have revamped the Categories GUI making room for some future enhancements and adding some things to it. We (ashikase and I, mainly ashikase) have also added some internal clean up code which will help on cases where the conversion did not go well from an older version to the latest version.

I am holding the release now for some initial bug reports or to see if there are any major issues. Download it here and use dpkg -i to install it. (If you dont know how to do this, you should wait for the release).

    ProSwitcher Is Awesome

    Author: BigBoss  //  Category: Apps

    Backgrounder + ProSwitcher

I realize this isn’t new news, but I just had to write it because ProSwitcher is just awesome. (And yes, it’s totally free). I have updated my why jailbreak iPhone page adding ProSwitcher. ProSwitcher is written by developers rpetrich and chpwn and backgrounder is written by ashikase.

There are severe limitations imposed on AppStore apps. One of these is “no background processes.” This means that if you have an app, such as an instant messenger app, every time you press home to go to something else, the app is closed out. You are disconnected. You get no messages, no notification, nothing.

Backgrounder is an attempt to fix this. Backgrounder allows you to select an app that you want to allow to run in the background. Then when you press home, that app will keep running. Perfect for an IRC app (try flowchat + backgrounder) or such that you do not want to get disconnected everytime you tap the home key. This adds critical functionality that you cannot get unless you jailbreak! On 3gs, you have plenty of memory to use this fully!

Combine this with ProSwitcher and you have a beautiful and simple interface into backgrounding one app and starting another. Activate ProSwitcher (in my case I have it to activate by double tapping status bar) and you get a coverflow view of all your running processes:

With this you can background and kill apps easily. While composing an email, quickly look something up on the web without closing your email program. Uses are endless.

3g / 2g users: you don’t have enough memory to really background a lot of apps, use it sparingly. 3gs users, you are in for a treat!

    iPhone 3gs Geohot Jailbreak Posted

Author: BigBoss  //  Category: Jailbreak, News

Update July 5, 2009: The purplera1n app is now released for OSX as well. Guides and links are updated. Install instructions are the same. OSX users can use the same guide.

Update July 4, 2009: The purplera1n app has been updated. Same download link. This fixes several issues such as Vista and Windows 7 not working. It also fixes teh kernel signing issues and Saurik’s vmcheck passes now paving the road for Winterboard soon!

If you already jailbroke with the old one, just run this from the pc over the top of your existing jailbreak. You will not get a freeze icon, the kernel and fixes will be updated wtihout it. If you didn’t jailbreak, now is the time as it works very well. Guide is updated for new version.

If you’re having problems such as it just hangs forever, make sure you have “purlera1n 3GS jailbreak by geohot RC2″ in the application window titlebar. If you don’t you may still have an old version.

So GeoHot released a 3gs jailbreak this evening. Exciting news (see SBSettings shows 159mb free RAM!):

It’s currently for Windows only. Personally, I don’t think that he wants to polish it but wanted to use this to egg the dev team to release theirs now. Anyway, there is a tool, it works in Windows only. Before you try to use it, please read my caution below and the guide.

There are issues with this jailbreak. As exciting as it is, I recommend that you guys wait. I believe that the dev-team will release something in the next couple days that will be more solid and proper. (GeoHot is amazing, and I have nothing bad to say about him). In case you didn’t want to wait, I do have a purplera1n guide below. Here are the issues (probably not a complete list):

    1) The update on July 4 solves almost all the issues. The jailbreak is very easy to run! It is finicky. I had major problems running this jailbreak. First, the iPhone is put into recovery mode and if it doesn’t work (and it didnt many times), the iPhone is left in recovery mode. Most of you will have to restore to get it out of recovery mode after this. Not too fun. I will detail some steps to take you out of recovery if you cannot get things to work.

    2) This is for Windows and OSX. This is for Windows Only, but not only that, it is for 32 bit Windows XP SP2 only. I do not know anyone that has had success on Vista.

    3) You must have iTunes 8.2.0.23 installed.

    4) This is solved on July 4th update. Winterboard does not run, it requires an update. Wait for it! The jailbreak is incomplete. The kernel vm_mem patch is not present so Winterboard will not work as some other critical tweaks. (SBSettings does work!).

    5) Solved July 4th. The jailbreak has some code signing issues. I haven’t determined what this will mean yet.

In short, the process is very easy. You don’t even have to hassle with DFU mode. Just run the tool, click a couple buttons, wait, when it’s done, you have an app on your iPhone 3gs called “Freeze”. Run that, download Cydia, reboot, and you’re done.

    Guide:
Geohot released a beta jailbreak called PurpleRa1n. It is beta and has some issues, but it gets the job done if you’re patient. Here are some steps and troubleshooting to accomplish the task:

    Requirements: You must have
    1) Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7 or OSX.
    2) iTunes 8.2.0.23
    3) Purplera1n software downloaded get here.

Step 1) Connect your iPhone to your computer. Close iTunes if it is running.

Step 2) Run the purplera1n file that you downloaded from the requirements section. You will see this screen on Windows:

    or this screen on OSX:

Step 3) Click “make it ra1n”. It will respond with “waiting for reboot”. Your iPhone will now reboot into recovery mode and you should see this image on your iPhone screen:

If you do not see this image and instead see the cable connecting to iTunes, wait 1 minute. If it stays that way then this did not work and you can assume you have to repeat the process. It’s ok to start it while you’re in recovery mode. It will just go right to the image above. If not, close purplera1n and repeat step 2 & 3. If you cant get past this, see troubleshooting.

Step 4) After a couple of minutes, your iPhone will reboot and you will see a new app with a blank icon called Freeze on your iPhone screen:

Step 5) Now we want to get Cydia installed. We’ll do this over the network. Make sure you have wifi or very stable 3g before running this step. When you do, run Freeze.

Step 6) Click “Install Cydia” and wait for it to download and install.

Step 7) When the install completes, close Freeze and reboot the iPhone.

Step 8) You now have a Cydia icon.

Step 9) Open Cydia and allow it to reorganize your apps (this eliminates the need for BossTool). After this, perform the essential updates or do a complete update.

Step 10) We no longer need the Freeze icon so let’s remove it. (Note: I do not recommend that we hide this icon using SBSettings as you may have this problem after you restore). Load Cydia and install “CyDelete”. Use the cydia search. By the way, notice how blazing fast Cydia runs on the 3gs! Wow!

Note: if springboard spins forever after the “restart springboard” just hold home and power until the iPhone shuts off, then power it back on. This seems to happen sometimes on 3.0 the first time mobile substrate installs. It all works after.

Step 11) Enable non Cydia deleting in CyDelete. Launch settings app and navigate to the bottom of the first page to find the settings bundle:

Step 12) Tap CyDelete and enable “Non-Cydia Deletion” (the top option).

Step 13) After the springboard reloads, hold any icon to get into wiggle mode and remove Freeze:

Step 14a) Optional. You no longer need CyDelete. You can uninstall this in Cydia now. I recommend keeping it however. It’s a very easy way to uninstall Cydia apps and you now have enough memory in your 3GS that you will not notice any overhead having it.

Step 15) Optional if you want to unlock now, you should be able to install Ultrasn0w. See my ultrasn0w guide.

    Troubleshooting:

I would not be surprised if you’re in this section. This process was a nightmare for me. It took me many tries and several different computers. Here are some problems and possible solutions.

Purplera1n crashes as soon as you tap “make it ra1n”. Your Apple mobile device service is not running. On Windows press windows + r and type “services.msc” into the run box and hit enter. Then locate the Apple Mobile Device service and right click, say “start”.
