GVIntegrated – A new way to Google Voice

Author: Jaywalker  //  Category: Apps, Jailbreak

In the early days of Google Voice, as many of you will remember, Apple was reluctant to allow Google to publish their app. Admittedly , I was among the many protesting to allow GV on the iPhone, but to be honest, when it finally arrived, I was still disappointed. Google’s not to blame; they did the best they could with what Apple gave them. I can say this because I stood in awe of their Android implementation. After months of struggling with the Google app I decided it was time to change the playing field.

Android users were able to have their devices ask which number they wanted to call with, all within the standard dialing application! I wanted this! I wanted to be able to define who I called with which number and for all others, be reminded that I have a choice. I wanted Google Voice, Integrated into my standard Phone.app! Thus, GVIntegrated was born.

iOS 4.3.4 out do not upgrade

Author: BigBoss  //  Category: Jailbreak, News

Update: Also do not yet update to iOS5, especially the GM which will expire. For info about iOS5, go here.

Update: all this applies to 4.3.5 as well.

As I predicted 10 days ago, Apple released iOS v4.3.4 today. This does nothing except patch the jailbreakme.com jailbreak from comex and, in the process, patch i0nic’s exploit making it so we cannot jailbreak 4.3.4 untethered. Im not sure if Apple has stopped signing 4.3.3 yet so if you havent then load cydia or tiny umbrella and get your shsh saved off. Additional warning to iPad 2 users. If you have a 3G iPad, even saving the shsh won’t be enough to restore 4.3.3 because the baseband is also under shsh protection now. Wifi only iPad 2′s and all other devices are still protected by shsh storage.

Again, do not update to this firmware. When iTunes asks if you want to install the new firmware, say no. If you update then you will gain nothing and lose your jailbreak.

This warning goes for 4.2.9, which is the CDMA version of the patched firmware. Do not install that either.

And no, this update provides you no new features only closes the jailbreak.

iPad 2 jailbreak released

Author: BigBoss  //  Category: Jailbreak, News

The iPad2 jailbreak is released tonight by Comex. This is a new PDF exploit that you can apply directly on your ipad by going to jailbreakme.com. Once the jailbreak runs, you will have a Cydia icon and a complete untethered jailbreak. This site can be used for all 4.3.3 devices not just ipad 2. If you are already jailbroken with Redsn0w, no need to jailbreak again, you are set.

Bigboss personal note: (no disrespect to Comex intended) While this seems like a great thing for everyone, in my opinion it is not. I would have liked to have seen this exploit held. Here’s why. The community probably had a free run until iOS5. Meaning, i0nic’s exploit was good for all devices except iPad 2. But Apple is focused on ios5 so they probably would not have released a 4.3.4 or 4.4. iOS 5 being due in September, that would have given every one another 2 months of freely jailbreaking any firmware. However, due to the nature of this being a PDF exploit that can be applied directly in Safari, Apple will have to immediately release an updated firmware to patch this exploit. That update will also have patched i0nic’s exploit. So I predict that within a week or so, we will have no more untethered jailbreak for the newest firmwares. Therefore, make sure you all load cydia and save your SHSH off so you can restore 4.3.3 if you ever need to again. And to the a$#@#$ that leaked the PDF exploit early, you basically gave Apple a 5 day head start on patching. Thanks.

iOS 4.3.3 is out. Do not update.

Author: BigBoss  //  Category: Jailbreak, News

Update: Redsn0w 0.9.6rc15 now supports untethered 4.3.3 jailbreak. I still recommend not updating due to no need to do so, but if you are on 4.3.3, you can now jailbreak it.

As the topic says. iOS v4.3.3 is now out. Do not update. It only contains a fix for the consolidated.db issue that the press made such a silly fuss over. If you require this fix, instead stay on your current firmware jailbroken and install untrackerd from cydia.

No official jailbreak is currently available and no ETA.Comex has verified, however, that the existing exploit used to jailbreak 4.3.1 and 4.3.2 still exists unpatched. It seems Apple didnt want to make any additional changes except the location tracking system. It seems redsn0w v0.9.6rc14 will jailbreak 4.3.3 tethered only as long as you point it to the 4.3.2 firmware. My advice is to wait for an official jailbreak for 4.3.3 before updating. And since the location untrackerd package successfully neuters the problem 4.3.3 aims to solve anyway, there’s really no reason to update for any jailbroken users.

Neuter Consolidated.db iPhone location tracking

Author: BigBoss  //  Category: Jailbreak, News

-
Thanks to developer Ryan Petrich, you can now neuter your iPhone location tracking.

Not sure what this is about? CNN and other news sites have been going on the last day about the fact that location services stores your location history in a database on your device called consolidated.db. The news sites makes a big fuss about this and has gotten everyone all up in arms over privacy issues. (My opinion is that this is all silly since the info is stored only on your personal device and computer and not sent to apple or anyone else, therefore, it’s no more a violation of your privacy as storing your contacts info on your device and computer. No information is being sent to Apple or anyone else. This is no violation of your privacy. Silly.) Nonetheless, people are upset over it since the news made a fuss, so the jailbreak community provides you a fix for it.

Now, understand what this is. In its current state, this is a process daemon that runs every 30 seconds every 5 minutes if the device is not asleep and clears the location data off your device. Search for untracker in cydia and install it.

Manually Save your SHSH 4.3.1 With Tiny Umbrella Now

Author: BigBoss  //  Category: Jailbreak, News

-
Urgent action required for anyone that likes jailbreaking 4.3.1, 4.3.2, or 4.3.3 and wants to do so in the near future.

For those of you unaware of the Apple firmware update policy, you can only restore firmware version that Apple approves. When you restore in iTunes, it goes to Apple’s web site and verifies if you are eligible for this specific version. This was solved by Cydia storing your SHSH (the is it ok to restore this version request response from Apple). This has been ok for the last year.

For current 4.3.2 SHSH, use the latest tiny umbrella version (same instructions) (Windows) and (OSX).

Watch the firmwareumbrella website for a 4.3.3 capable version and use it when you can!

To do this, go to advanced, uncheck “request shsh from cydia” and uncheck “set hosts to cydia on exit”. Then restart umbrella, go to show all shsh’s and save them all. In the logs you should see 4.3.1 come down. This will allow you to restore 4.3.1 or 4.3.2 through umbrella’s tss server if you need to.

Cydia’s SHSH system will hopefully be back up soon. When it is, I will post about it on this site. (Note: your older shsh’s are still safely stored in Cydia and are not lost).

Alternative to this is to install iSHSHit from Cydia, back up your SHSH and then email it to yourself. From there you can copy it to tinu umbrella’s SHSH folder.

SBSettings v3.3

Author: BigBoss  //  Category: Apps, General, Jailbreak

Changes:

    v3.3.1

  • Fix: statusbar date on 4.2.1 or newer devices.
    v3.3

  • Fix: Updated fix blanks button to hopefully not crash when more than one blank exists
  • Fix: Hopefully fixed the more app crashing when one of the ads cannot load.
  • Fix: When moving toggles order, added back the “save” button so user knows to press “save” to save changes.
  • Fix: Lock screen buttons when you hit the power button on the lock screen. Removed lock and the title so it fits.
  • Fix: Internal window ordering in main drop down window to help compatibility issue with folder enhancer.
  • New: Added option to more app, system options, to delete the carrier name to give more space to statusbar for things like date and free memory.
  • New: Included Max’s Serious SBSettings HD theme that adds a retina icons display theme to default sbsettings. Thanks to Max at maxthemes.com for this great theme!
  • New: Added retina icons for the more app for retina displays. Thanks to 42395_skyline for these icons!
  • New: Added support for springboard key that was used by makeitmine app. This means that installing SBSettings should actually fix makeitmine. (I did this because it’s needed for the delete carrier name option).
  • Toggles: Removed phone toggle from default. It doesn’t work on 4.2.1 and newer devices. Use airplane instead. (Phone toggle is now installable via separate package in cydia for older devices).

Note: Everytime I release an update to SBSettings, my inbox is literally flooded with a whole bunch of “SBSettings bugs” that are not even remotely related to SBSettings. Sometimes it takes a long time to debug these issues and point out which app had the issues. If you are having problems, and it’s some wacky thing that is not in the change log above, you should consider removing mobile substrate and all the apps it wants to remove, rebooting, installing sbsettings in this state, and seeing if you can reproduce the issue. Then reinstall your apps one-by-one. I know it’s a pain, but this is basically what I’ll recommend you do when I sense that the issue cannot be SBSettings related.

iOS 4.3.2 is out. Do not update!

Author: BigBoss  //  Category: Jailbreak, News

As the subject says. Apple is pushing iOS 4.3.2 via iTunes. You cannot jailbreak it so do not update. You will gain nothing and lose everything you have installed on your jailbreak.  The official changes in the 4.3.2 update is “fixes some facetime issue and 3g connectivity issues on ipad”. Sigh.

4.3.1 Untethered Jailbreak Out

Author: BigBoss  //  Category: Jailbreak, News

Dev team has released an untethered 4.3.1 jailbreak in the form of redsn0w 0.9.6rc9 or newer or pwnagetool 4.3.1.  Credit goes to Stefan Esser (I0n1c) for finding this one.  (Let’s hope he’s a new player here to stay, if you can find out where to donate to him, go do so).

You can download redsn0w MAC or Windows and use our guide here if you have questions.  Read more about it at the dev team blog.

Warning for unlockers: WARNING WARNING — ultrasn0w users don’t update yet! We need to first release an update to ultrasn0w that fixes some incompatibilities when FW 4.3.1 is used on the older basebands supported by ultrasn0w.

Note: this does not work on 4.3 currently. Only 4.3.1. Also does not support iPad 2.

If you have problems with redsn0w hanging uploading payload on Windows 7, try setting XP Compatibility Mode.

Cydia 1.1 out now; fast & friendly!

Author: Optimo  //  Category: Jailbreak, News
Edit: You can now fix lost community sources by loading cydia, on home page tapping on “more package sources” and then at the top of the page, any lost community sources will be present. Tap on them to reinstall / fix them.

This morning marks an historic release of our beloved jailbreak package installer. Cydia 1.1 represents a huge amount of time and effort spent fine-tuning the user experience and lots and lots of speed added. Amongst the new features and functionality, the speed in performing most tasks has improved tremendously. A noticable and welcome change includes an improved Search routine and results list, as well as a perisistent-feel for using Cydia on iOS 4+ where multittasking is commonplace. The Cydia homepage and Store features have also received tons of improvements over the last few months, so be sure to check it out. Nearly all parts of Cydia on both the front- and back-end have been tenderly nourished, adding up to an entirely fresh and exciting user experience that should appeal to all. It’s a new day, it’s a new Cydia. Let everyone know, the best just got better. Note that this was a community effort. This is where open source can really shine. Rather than only Saurik doing all the work on this one, we also had significant help from chpwn, Dustin Howett, and Ryan Petrich as well as countless hours put in by Saurik, himself.

Note: community sources are no longer packages. If you delete one, you will have no way to re-add it. You will have to manually delete the file /var/lib/cydia/metadata.plist and restart cydia.

4.3 Out, Hold off. Do not upgrade yet!

Author: BigBoss  //  Category: Jailbreak

Updated 3/9/2011.

iOS v4.3 is out. This is mainly to support ipad2.  It adds a couple small features such as SMS reminder on incoming SMS messages, personal hotspot, and iTunes home sharing. Nothing big.

As always, I give my standard warning not to update and wait for the jailbreak release. This time, I am giving some extra caution, however.

At time of this writing, there is no jailbreak out yet. In addition, none of the new features are worth trading away your jailbreak. The first jailbreaks are likely to be tethered. So make sure you wait for an official update of greenpoison or redsn0w before you update. I’ll definitely announce when these are ready.

In addition, with 4.3 comes apple’s implementation of address space layout randomization (ASLR). In short, this will mess up the way mobile substrate works. You will need a new mobile substrate in order to use your favorite tweaks such as winterboard, sbsettings, bitesms, folder enhancer, etc. So you should definitely avoid 4.3 until an “official” jailbreak is released for it.

We now have a support channel on IRC:
#ios at irc.thebigboss.org, chat.thebigboss.org, or irc.conceited.net. If you don’t have an irc client, you can connect wtih this link.

If you want a native IRC client you can use mIRC for windows or Linkinus for OSX.

Chat etiquette:
1) Please pick a decent nick name don’t use mib_34234j
2) If you have questions or need help just ask the channel and wait around. People respond as they see the question sometimes 15-20 mins later.
3) DONT TYPE IN ALL CAPS (that’s considered yelling).
4) Don’t send private messages to people without permission first. Your question should probably be asked in public and may be relevant to other users’ problems.
5) It is perfectly fine to “idle” there which means connect, stay connected even when you aren’t there. Many of us do that.
6) Have fun!
