iPhone 2.2.1 Jailbreak Is Out

Author: BigBoss  //  Category: Jailbreak

The Dev Team released the iPhone 2.2.1 jailbreak. You can download the files pwnage or quickpwn (Mac) / quickpwn (Windows). At this point, only MAC OSX Quickpwn and pwnage are released. You should read the dev team blog for details and warnings on the upgrade relating to the 3g unlock. The 2g baseband has not been upgraded so you will not lose your unlock if you are unlocking a 2g iPhone. The 3g yellowsn0w 0.97 has been released also.

Additionally, the procedure is the same so if you need help head on over to the guides section and read the pwnage or quickpwn guides.

Confused about which one to use?

Pwnage – use this if you are going to unlock your 3g. It will prevent a baseband update. Use this to build a custom firmware and program it on. This will do the upgrade for you so you do not need to update in itunes.

Quickpwn – use this if you want to just upgrade in itunes then jailbreak. Do not use this if you are unlocking a 3g. Use this if you have already updated to 2.2.1.

Finally, a personal comment. Should you upgrade at all? If you are running 2.1 or 2.2, I say no. 2.2.1 is pretty much worthless. If you are running anything under 2.1 yes you should upgrade. 2.0-2.0.2 are horribly buggy and slow. 2.1 and newer solve this. If you are below 2.0, you dont even have appstore and you are obsolete. Upgrade!

iPhone 2.2.1 pwnage progress

Author: BigBoss  //  Category: Jailbreak

There’s a hacked up version of quickpwn 2.2.1 going around. This is basically just quickpwn 2.2 with a hacked up bundle added to it by a 3rd party. This is not the official quickpwn 2.2.1. The official version is actually still being tested. The dev teams prefer to release tested software rather than untested software. Still, if you are interested in trying it out early and are totally fine with having unstable, unknown, untested software, you can try it out from here. This only has 2g bundles so if you have an iPod or iPhone 3g, you need to wait.

Firmware v2.2.1 Update Out – do not upgrade yet

Author: BigBoss  //  Category: Jailbreak

Apple released iPhone firmware v2.2.1. As always, hold off on your upgrade. This one sounds pretty worthless anyway. In this upgrade, it claims to fix safari stability (which was already stable on 2.2, and they always claim to fix this anyway) and solved some issue in emailing photos. The 2g baseband did not get updated. The 3g baseband is at 2.30.03. If you were using yellowsn0w, this will shut you down. I’m sure jailbreak will be available soon. So just hold off.

iPhone Copy and Paste

Author: BigBoss  //  Category: News

Major news (even if it’s a day or so old), but the iPhone has 2 copy and paste apps now: Clippy and Clipboard. I have updated the reasons to jailbreak link adding this information. Check out a brief example of how it works using screenshots of me pasting from notes to safari using Clippy:

Here is the text, then mark the text.

Copy the marked text, then paste the text, in this case, I pasted into safari.

You can install Clippy from Cydia.

Clipboard shoudl be in Cydia in a day or two. See more information about it here.

yellowsn0w can now be considered stable

Author: Pico  //  Category: General, Jailbreak

Thanks to the hard work and dedication from the Dev-Team, the iPhone 3G’s software unlock solution is near completion and quite stable. I have been following forum posts from hackintosh, modmyi, and howardforums and the consensus is pretty clear it works for 95% of the people around the world using different types of sims and carriers.

Before yellowsn0w, I used the “Virgin-Sim” sim proxy, and it worked quite well with T-mobile USA. When yellowsn0w was released on New Years Eve, I disregarded reading any forums and continued to restore my iphone to 2.2 (I was at 2.1) and install yellowsn0w. To my disappointment, it was a pain to get working (multiple reboots, airplane mode toggling, and sim removal and reinsertion).

Site Format Updates

Author: BigBoss  //  Category: News

I have made some site format changes to help accomodate a couple requests I have had from you users. The first request was to try to make the page a bit faster to load. So I am now only showing a few excerpts from the article with a “continue reading” link so that you don’t have to load every image from every post on the main page.

The second request was that with the app authors being able to write their own posts, it was no longer easy to find my posts, and that is what many users said they came here to read. So I have created a link at the top of the posts that will allow you to view only my posts. I have also put the author’s name in RED so that it stands out on each post.

I really want to allow developers hosting in the BigBoss Repository to be able to annouce their own apps to everybody here. That way developers can get some feedback from the users. I know that it has helped me a lot in my own apps to have comments.
